Virtually all anti-air missiles, whether fired by ground installation or by another aircraft, use annular blast fragmentation to destroy or damage their target. The missile closes the gap between the launcher and a receding target to a 100 meters in 14 seconds. After that it chases the same target for more than a minute.
the SA-13 strela missile only has range of 3 miles with a maximum speed of 1100 mph equipped with a dual mode photo contrast IR seeker head. so i think it is possible that the F-18 could dodge this missile but they have to try to break the lock.
As a fighter pilot i can say this scene is pure fictional. Missiles typically do not “chase down” fighter jets as misrepresented in movies. An effective missile shot will have the missile reaching the aircraft with a much greater speed (like twice as fast). Once the motor burns out, the missile then glides to its target
Everyone with special knowledge will find movies silly when it crosses their expertise. I'm a chemist and the silliness that goes on in CSI😫 I don't doubt that nuclear plan workers cringe when watching The Simpsons.
The part where the SAM hit the F18 and where the pilot ejected was so dramatic to me it got to the point where it was funny. But I know I’m reality it must me very scary.
Not only does the rocket motor never extinguish but it's also pulling 10-12 G's in the process................meanwhile disregarding all countermeasures. Fucking amazing SAM. Perhaps our military needs to consult hollywood on this amazing piece of technology!!!
It depends on the maneuvers used to evade it, if you look at the comm trails behind the SAM it flanks around trying to intercept it, also it does depend on the missile, that model I believe is Russian so it uses over-powering speed to catch it's target, that I could be wrong on though.
SAM missiles chase your butt around, just like these are doing. They usually don't fly long enough to be able to catch the maneuvering plane. They run out of fuel...
umaxen01 So I guess it's easier for them to intercept the aircraft than following its butt around... less maneuvering, less fuel waste. If it's following the aircraft from behind, i think it would waste more fuel - more maneuvers to hit the target
***** Maybe, but if it's using over-powering speed, I guess that intercepting the aircraft is the easiest way to hit the target... but i don't know. I'm not an expert :)
When I first watched this scene, I could overlook the missiles seeming to have an endless fuel supply, but the second missile continuing to function after striking the plane was completely unbelievable. It simply would've been too badly damaged to operate. This kind of ruined it for me. The rest of the movie was good, however.
Missile takes 3 seconds to close within 20 foot of the plane, that had a 30 second head start. Then proceeds to take 2 minutes to cover the remaining 20 feet.
one ,,little,, correction, this is from movie Behind enemy lines which was based on true events in Bosnia. First of all, it was not the F/A-18 but F-16 was shot down, second thing it got downed by ,,KUB 2K12,, sam sistem, not with ,,9K35 Strela-10,, and pilot was rescued after 6 days...
Uhh it's not based on the actual war. The Serbs shot down one F-16 and one F-117. The Serbs genocide is real in this movie, Fuckers killed innocent Bosnians.
I watched the movie, and I had found it really nice, but I had missed the beginning.I can't believe that I just watched Soviet-era heat-seekers chase a F/A-18 full of countermeasures for 1 or so minutes while performing such exteme turns. The missiles should have given up long ago, while the plane itself should (and would have, in the real world) dumped many more chaff and flares.
@@BJ-bd5fc forget about the missiles. The part where he gets attacked by 200 soldiers and nobody hits him and he gets away was just ridiculous, tanks, BTRs and he still made it out in day light.
I love how the missile chases the F/A-18F Super Hornet way longer than it actually can. Another thing to note is that after missing the first time around, a missile will just crash into the ground or burn out.
This is ridiculous. Even playing a bit of flight sims tells you that: a. No missile flies like that. Once they've passed you, you're clear. b. I don't think that Master Caution goes on at a launch warning in the F-18. c. They're dropping just flares when they clearly state 'chaff', and dropping flares doesn't make any sense against a radar thread. However, I don't know how the F-18 CMS is configured. d. The typical American RWS/MWS doesn't sound like in the movie. They missed an opportunity here, too - It sounds way cooler. e. Once the F-18 is behind a mountain, the SAM breaks lock immediately and the missiles go ballistic. f. Why do they even enter the threat area with outer fuel tanks? Fuel tanks are typically dropped at fence-in (WAAAY before you're near your target), and all bomb stations should be immediately cleared if you have to be defensive (That's literally one switch, that gets thrown if you get the 'locked on' on your RWS).
You are right. However in reality a fighter jet against three SAM missiles will have a hard time no matter how advanced it is. Hollywood rarely depicts reality.
Three missiles at once isn't a problem. Most of the time, you defeat all at once with the same maneuver (if they're the same type). Three missile in short order is more difficult. It burns through countermeasures and bleeds energy because you have to counteract every one after the other. This leads to you without chaffs and flares with minimal air speed and low to the ground - then you're a sitting duck.
You're welcome, I'm not an expert though and I don't want to make an amalgam between all the different missiles but I know it can generally support 11G's and keep up with a plane even in a tough defensive maneuver. But you're right, it flies about twice the speed of sound to come as fast as possible but when it has to turn... it's not that easy.
Every movie is meant for a "gullible" audience then. There's no sound in space. F U STARWARS!!! DNA has a relative short lifespan. F U JURASSIC PARK!!! People in the middle ages had horrible teeth and knights were rapists. F U ALMOST EVERY KNIGHT MOVIE EVER!!! *sigh*
Can you explain to me what was happening here? The missile shot out projectiles, and did not strike the aircraft. Is this accurate? Proximity fuse? Please give me a SAM lesson, I can't find it online.
IAMGOD712007 Direct hits on fast maneuvering targets are very hard to achieve, so most air to air missiles and surface to air missiles (though not all) are equipped with some form of a proximity fuse. When the missile gets into its range, the proximity fuse detonates the missile and the shrapnel and blast from the missile are what achieve the kill. Now there are some SAMs and air to air missiles that require a direct kill, but this is considered by and large a less effective and less reliable method.
Pro tip: When you get a launch warning, don't pull up to gain altitude. All that does is depletes your airspeed and make you an easier target. Instead, start deploying chaff, get as low as possible, and do your best to out-maneuver the missile (you can't really out-maneuver a missile, but making a lot of movement will force the missile to turn with you, allowing you to essentially bleed the missile's energy). Anyone with knowledge of military aviation hates this movie lmfao

I'm not an expert either, but with the propulsion those SAMs use would work either way within a mile, maybe, I could be mistaken on the model.
The "Made in USA" on the nose at the end got me
When I first watched this scene, I could overlook the missiles seeming to have an endless fuel supply, but the second missile continuing to function after striking the plane was completely unbelievable. It simply would've been too badly damaged to operate. This kind of ruined it for me. The rest of the movie was good, however.
Missile takes 3 seconds to close within 20 foot of the plane, that had a 30 second head start. Then proceeds to take 2 minutes to cover the remaining 20 feet.
they put the missile in Holywood mode
Imagine if S-400 or S-500 ?
it's a phase changing missile with quantum intrication, that's why his buddy cam so fast
Missile needs some footage & excitement before it blows itself up. Understandable
@Joe Barone Yea!! A Sam missile with a never ending fuel. Could have reached Mars.
you can't detect a Fox 2, it's passive-infrared. The pilot/aircraft would have no idea unless he saw it launch.
2:39 this is so satisfying for me :D
An awesome scene...I sometimes pull out the DVD just to watch that scene
FOR EVERYONE WHO SAID "A SAM IS MORE FAST THAN F-18", IT'S A FUCKING FILM
Eyyy I watched this movie.....it's called behind enemy lines. Was an amazing movie n this is my favourite part
Then you will not like how innaccurate this entire scene is.
@@aidanpaul2745 For a Dog and Pony show, it's pretty good.
Looks unrealistic as the SAMs had enough fuel to burn all the chases.
Ah yes, a SAM with hundreds of kilometers of range… what poppycock
one ,,little,, correction, this is from movie Behind enemy lines which was based on true events in Bosnia. First of all, it was not the F/A-18 but F-16 was shot down, second thing it got downed by ,,KUB 2K12,, sam sistem, not with ,,9K35 Strela-10,, and pilot was rescued after 6 days...
watch?v=1lRMz1H8RUg
Vuk Mistović Yes, it's right! But this movie was supported by Navy and not AirForce. That's why F-18 ;)
this is first time I have seen this video but I knew it has something to do with Bosnia , because of the mountains
it's a fucking movie
Uhh it's not based on the actual war. The Serbs shot down one F-16 and one F-117. The Serbs genocide is real in this movie, Fuckers killed innocent Bosnians.
1:51 like dat sound of the second tank hitting the ground
If that pilot it was Tom Cruise , than he will not only escape the missile , and also taking a SAM's picture.
Wow haven't seen content like this in a long time!
Can u tell me the movie name
@@phantompakistan592 its behind enemy line
@@phantompakistan592 Pretty sure it's Behind Enemy Lines.
There were considerably more than two missiles fired during the scene, but the editing cuts all of that out.
Its powered by vodka. Made by Stalin. #motherrussia
Not a Super Hornet. This is an old film, Behind Enemy Lines.
@@crableg2128 😂🤣👍на русской водке
Легендарный фильм: в тылу врага.
Ну и филм я не видел но очень заинтересовался филм классны
0:25 as of now the IDEM camera doesn’t exist on an F/A-18F; there is however the SHARP recon pod.
Say what you will about authenticity etc. but strictly from a visual standpoint - holy shit!
Buddy of mine is an Air Force pilot. This scene is super unrealistic, according to him.
"talk to me, Goose"
These SAM missiles chase f18 sounds like 2 eagles chase their prey in the air
This is ridiculous.
Even playing a bit of flight sims tells you that:
This leads to you without chaffs and flares with minimal air speed and low to the ground - then you're a sitting duck.
well that missile was infrared guided so using flares makes sense but it still said chaff. tho sonetimes chaff is deployed in conjunction with flares.
F-18 speed is about 2000 km/h
SAM missile speed is 5000+ km/h
Also, what kind of missile is that? It shoots you instead of blowing you up?
GeFlixes in very close distance like that of the movie you have very little time to avoid anything.
From the Movie "Behind Enemy Lines"
Worlds longest burning solid fuel rocket motor.
Top Gun Maverick SAM attack puts this shit to shame, waaaay more realistic
And the film name is "behind the enemy lines"🙏
FINALLY at least a SINGLE clip when Russia can win FINALLY!!!!!
Also, the missile must run on vodka or something, never runs out!
I think, the bear inside makes additional acceleration.
XD
play War Thunder, Russia never loses. Ever.
They absolutely need Maverick
Какая настойчивая ракета))) Попасть не может, но не сдается. Наверняка китайская))
Советская , Стрела-10

F18 F Super Hornet : one of the world most advanced fighter..
Common SAM : Hold my beer..
SAMs fly at least at mach 3. This is meant for a gullible audience. Also, these were optical... so, there is no way the plane can survive.
IAMGOD712007
Direct hits on fast maneuvering targets are very hard to achieve, so most air to air missiles and surface to air missiles (though not all) are equipped with some form of a proximity fuse. When the missile gets into its range, the proximity fuse detonates the missile and the shrapnel and blast from the missile are what achieve the kill. Now there are some SAMs and air to air missiles that require a direct kill, but this is considered by and large a less effective and less reliable method.
wich is the full speed of f18?
***** Yeaaaa... nobody understands that there's dozens of SAM systems out there.
Top Gun Maverick 11 years before it got released. But with infinite fuel SAMs that go at the same speed as an F-18 😭
An F18 nearly keeping pace with missiles? Thats a riot.
Anyone with knowledge of military aviation hates this movie lmfao
you wont see it coming
Thanks. I'll remember this when I'm taking the kids to school in the morning.
@@milorichards1962 LOL! 😂
in gtav i just fly in circles, the missile doesn't catch up 👍
Ah yes. They fired the SAMs that have infinite fuel and rear facing seekers.
