Keep It Stupid Simple: Don't Overthink Your GoPro Setup.

  • Ever wondered what my GoPro settings are for recording POV Mountain bike footage? You might be surprised just how simple and easy this set up will make getting good GoPro POV footage is. I will show how I mount the GoPro to my Chin Bar, What video settings I use, my audio hacks for reducing wind noise, how I color grade my footage, and how I export GoPro videos for TH-cam so the MTB footage doesn't look like crap.

    I find that many aspiring TH-camrs fall into the trap of getting too caught up with having the right gear. I do too at times, but at the end of the day, don't let not having the perfect gear hold you back. And also don't let your gear interfere with the story. The story is more important than the gear you use. A turd filmed with a red epic is still a turd. A well put together story filmed with a potato cam will be more interesting any day of the week.
    I've always liked this video which shows Philip Bloom making a video with a barbie camera th-cam.com/video/9VS3C183G8g/w-d-xo.html

    As a former pro-still shooter I’d like to agree with a previous statement here.... most pros will not share a lot of the technical behind the scenes info like Phil does. It took me a good while to learn things along the path of my career to set up because no one would share. It takes more to running a business than just being a good shooter and good business men know that and they aren’t intimidated by sharing on how to help us amateurs make better videos. Thanks Phil...

    Thanks for putting this vid together bunch of good info. The chin mount is by far the best angle in my opinion, I even like it more than the chest gimbal angle, and so much easier and less to worry about than the gimbal setup.
    I want to experiment and try to find a similar angle to the chin mount using a Fox Dropframe helmet and mounting on the ear section of the helmet. Not sure how it will work out, but may potentially work decent... Would be nice to not have to wear a full face on easier trails.

    I've seen this video a loooong time ago and was gonna get the Proframe soon but have had another look and found the IXS Trigger FF. Very lightweight and you can stick one of those GoPro patches right on the bottom of the chin-part of the helmet. That is you don't need any zip ties to make it fit. This way you don't have to screw on the GoPro everytime you want to mount it on the chin but rather clip it in like you always do.

    Thanks for sharing. You have the best footage out there IMO. I have tried messing with "fuzzy stuff," but keeping it glued on is a huge hassle. A buddy of mine recently replaced his foam "Windslayer" cover with a mic cover from a Sure SM58 microphone that he had lying around. He just stretched it over the camera, and then cut a hole for the lens, and that way it covers all the holes in the foam wind cover. It's a slightly more dense foam as well. He just pushes the button down through the foam. I plan to try it and see if it makes a difference side by side with a standard foam cover . If you go to the Hero 8, with as good as it sounds wthout any cover, I'm guessing with just a foam windslayer, it's going to sound pretty good. I have yet to see anyone try the 8 chin mounted, but I don't know if it will impove anything. It might be slightly smoother, but I'm not sure that's going to help or hurt, because some motion helps it be more immersive. Your footage is already stable enough, with crisp audio, for me to watch all day as it is now.

    • @SkillsWithPhil
      @SkillsWithPhil  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I will be getting the Hero 8 whenever best buy or any local store around me has them in stock. I can say pretty confidently that I will not be using Hypersmooth high/boost unless I'm doing a follow-cam and the focus is on another rider. The hero 8 is appealing to me because of the form factor and new settings menu. Otherwise, I could go another year using the Hero 7 without any qualms.

    • @willbros1499
      @willbros1499 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SkillsWithPhil ... That's kind of how I feel about it as well. I think the "high" setting for Hypersmooth will look better than "boost," with the chin mount, based on what I've seen online. Boost is too much, and I think I recall that it crops more as well. I hate how the menus are on the 7. I'm constantly pushing the wrong buttons by accident! I'm just going to continue to hope you and others don't put it on a chest mount. The body roll that a gimbal corrects for can't be corrected with Hypersmooth, and that makes me queasy after just a very short clip.

    Any protips on those "Fuzzy Stuff" at #4:26? I think need it in my life. Thanks!
    Edit: Somehow i missed the VELCRO part of the "fuzzy stuff". I had a few lying about. The first one was one with adhesive, so I cut it and glued it. i did test recording and it was awful. Turns out it had a rubber adhesive part, not just the fuzzy part. Found another, this time - a double sided tape. I've split it into fuzzy and hooky pieces, glued the fuzzy and boom - worked as advertised.

    The fuzzy velcro is called Loop tape. The prickley stuff is called Hook tape. Mostly because it looks like small hooks if you look at it up close and the loop or "fuzzy tape" is made of small loops.

    • @SkillsWithPhil
      @SkillsWithPhil  4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi. Instant freedom, when you turned 'vignette' off!
    I have never used it as a means to focus the viewer's attention, but to remove the vignette caused by a not so good wide angle lens.
    In my opinion, the best shots in your videos are third person anyway, as your smooth moves over the bike are really wild to watch and the thing to learn from.
    The chin mounted cam makes you kink it down very steep, if you still want your handlebar sponsors to be visible. As with vignette above, I'd prefer to see the wide horizon, rather than the racer's tunnel vision.
    Maybe you can make two marks to align the cam mount to.

    Not sure if you're responding to comments on old videos, but what do you do about breathing noise and the chin mount? I like the video quality on the chin mount, but boy does it pick up all of my breathing. hero8 if it matters.

    another good setup for the 7 is with the stuntman chesty. it keeps the camera much more stable allowing it to hyper smooth. check out my last few videos for some footy

      The issue is when you jump and pump, your chest angle changes and moves quite a bit which results in really nauseating footage.

    Do you think that you are going to use the full face most or all of the time to get footage?

    lol...after knocking sharpness, the video cuts to a very blurry scene. Still, huge thanks for this video. Very helpful.

    Thanks Phil that was great to know! Now what about your Enduro setup? Ie no dh helmet. What gimbal do you have and how do you set that up? Does the gimbal effect the audio of the GoPro? Cheers.

      If I'm going to do a video on a trail ride, I'll run the Fox ProFrame helmet or mount it to the top and of my helmet, though I think I might pick up a GoPro Max or Hero 8 and running them on a chesty for those kinds of situations.

    I've had an idea but I don't know if this would work, I think that if you could switch the mic from the hero 4 to a hero 7 or smth won't you have the dream action cam
