    The best thing about the "arcade version" of Death Crimson is that aside from the massive controller it's literally just a Saturn with a copy of Death Crimson sealed inside it for all eternity

    • @RealWonderSwan
      @RealWonderSwan 4 ปีที่แล้ว +61

      Funniest thing, but in Japan, people would create "Death Saturns", which were Sega Saturns that were glued shut that would only play Death Crimson. I stumbled across it being a big fan of Death Crimson and it's story, and it's one of the funniest bits about it.
      Can't remember where I found this link, but I kept it on my bookmarks tab for quite a while, because shit was just really interesting to me:

      Damn your comment activated some nostalgia for me, but in the weirdest way. I'm gonna miss the bowling alley near my house, despite the fact that I don't really bowl. It just closed this January due to COVID. There was something special about it. It did in fact have this EXACT vibe. The weird ass 90s jazzy carpet. The super strange 3D animations when someone got a strike or spare or gutterball. It even had a small arcade in it. The arcade games were all from the 90s-2000s are somehow all in working order until the end. The sound of the people bowling kinda fading into the background as I played Time Crisis 2 or Virtual On is just a fond memory. They also were mostly just straight up Japanese arcade games. There was even cheap, greasy food and a weird ass room that just had pool tables, a bar and dads smoking (when indoors smoking was legal). Shit had a super oddly comfy vibe. ThorHighHeels videos just kinda give me that vibe with the visuals and sound.

    The awkward part of the Saturn was how Japanese it is. Like, most of the people who would buy one were people interested in weird Japanese franchises.
    Probably doesn't help that it's killer apps were way too Japanese for western audiences to appreciate at the time so most weren't localized.

    One of the best things about Christmas Nights is how the backgrounds change depending on what time of year it is. Also fun is when you unlock the Sonic into Dreams present and get to run around the maps as ...well Sonic the Hedgehog. It's a shame that the Saturn never got a proper Sonic game as Sonic into Dreams and the over world in Sonic Jam showed what potentially could have been.

    The Saturn was hella weird in so many ways which has given it an enduring place in my heart. While I never really had the pleasure to own one a friend of mine got one back in the day solely on the strength of the Genesis and it was interesting to see the most mainstream gamer of kids stuck with all this obscure shit get his mind expanded. And then of course there was a summer where I watched a friend blow his college fund on collecting all the rarest titles for the system and gained a deeper appreciation for what it could do. Perhaps one day I'll be able to start getting into this scene.

    Funny enough earlier this year I won an Sega Saturn from my local retro game store. The Staurn is a cool console and has some really unique games. And yes I have a pseudo Saturn cart and burned the whole library on blank CDs. But anyways I am glad you are enjoying the Saturn as much as I have been this year and this video is dope.

    Happy to hear you have some new hardware. This video made my day. Great to see you cover titles like Death Crimson and Lunacy. Although it isn't anything like those two games, you should check out Dark Savior. I played through it this year and although a bit flawed it is unique and I really enjoyed it.

      LOL this video was clearly ironic or a joke. None of the games featured were mysterious at all, in any way. They’re some of the most popular SS games that have been covered to pieces

    I'm so glad I found ThorHighHeels - after watching his old library up to this I'm happy to witness his growth as both a deep critic and entertainer. He/you have a sublime aspect to the videos that's difficult to articulate. It's weird; it legit makes me want to make a channel reviewing game reviewers, but I'm lazy and I'd rather watch THH and Hbomb and other people and yell at the screen and pretend I'm smart instead.
    Ok well I'll patreon you tomorrow k? I believe what you do is actual Art criticism (!) and worthy of support and i want to see where you take your thoughts. This shit is hard and i want you to challenge youself and get weird with what you do. I think you can really do good and contribute to the positive trajectory of video games.
    Good vidja dude.

    I've never played any Saturn games but I've always been interested in giving it a shot. As someone who loves this era of games as my favorite, specifically the PS1, the Saturn shares a lot of those early 3D vibes I really like.

    • @cloudtx
      @cloudtx 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @The Ninth Heart Stupid comment. The PS1 won that generation for a reason. It had a ton more games and among them a lot of the best games in that era.
      This is not to say that the Saturn is devoid of quality titles, I'm interested in trying some, but even if you like the Saturn more your comparison is nonsense.

    You introduced me to a lot of Saturn games I now want to look into; my system is pretty much unloved currently. Gotta get that pseudo cart tho. Apparently Edgar Allan Poe is hugely influential not only on Rampo but throughout Japan, hence the in-game portrait. Rampo did his own tales of mystery and imagination inspired by Poe's that are also really good in their own right. Speaking of Janky-ass mystery games with stilted FMV character animations and voice acting, will you cover Necronomicon: Dawning of Darkness at some point? Truly the best Lovecraft game (if ever there was one) bar none. Since you like Lunacy You'll love it!
