Honestly, two weeks ago I would never have thought I'd watch someone else shave for 20 minutes. But I recently bought the Merkur 34C and I'm a bit nervous about not having any technique. It was very good to watch your strokes, and the lathering. I feel enough confidence to give it a try. Thanks.
It’s pretty weird to watch someone shave, but I have to say even for me. It’s how I started using a safety razor and learning the different technique is huge. Thanks for your support. I really appreciate it.
New sub and first time posting here. It's uncanny: Like others have said, I own the Rockwell 6c and the Merkur 34 razor as well. My favorite blades are Astra, Silver Blues, and Wilkinson Sword (India and China). I started with the Merkur then I bought the Rockwell due to all the good reviews. I have sensitive skin, and for quite awhile I was having issues with the 34. I got the Rockwell, and it worked very good for quite awhile with the #2 plate, but it took many more passes. I then switched back over to the Merkur, and I no longer had those issues with nicks and irritated skin (technique). Just recently--like yourself, I started using the Rockwell with the #6 plate for the first pass, and that got most of it...then plates #3 and finishing with #2. That combo for me is AS GOOD as using the Merkur for a 3 pass shave. No skin irritation at all...go figure. Great channel here, and nice closeups!
Thank you for the great video. I started wet shaving 6 months ago and have recently changed Merkur 34hd to Rockwell 6c. Your stream was exactly I needed as I couldn’t decide what is better - the mild Merkur paired with the aggressive Feather blade or Rockwell 6c, 6 plate with the mild Green Astra. In any case at the moment, I am with Rockwell and it gives me excellent smooth daily shave. The only difference is that for three passes I use 6/6/4 plates and after that I insert plate 2 for improvements. Changing plates takes seconds however at the same time giving benefits to my skin. Therefore, I am for Rockwell!!!))) Thanks again for the video.
Been wet shaving since 19 years old, going "classic style" with DE blades and razors for almost 20 years now and still there are things I keep learning along the way. :) I have both of these and I like them a lot. Rockwell delivers a very nice and close shave for me with the nr 4 plate for the first passes and then switching to nr 2 for the more sensitive neck area. The 34C is a very good beginners razor, I still use this and currently I've been using it at work for my quicker shaves in the mornings. Nice video!
The 34c looked like a better shave just from the video. I own both the 34c and 6c and 6s. I prefer the 34c myself just so simple to use, gentle and always a fantastic shave.
Thanks for sharing! They both are excellent razors and are in my top three and will always be. I'm sure. The subtle differences between the two can make a big difference. Learning off a 34C I still have a love for it. I recommend it to a ton of people as well.
Great content. Very informative, and excellent camera work. I really appreciate how your views on performance never overlap your observations on the actual results.
Just started using my 34C again after a few years. It gives me the closest shave with a feather blade but leaves my face sore and in need of a long recovery period. And as for the Rockwell 6C, it’s just perfect. 👍
I had a Rockwell 6 C, I mainly used the 3 or 4 plate with a Feather or Kai blade. Great shaves all the time with it. The problem with the Rockwell was that the threads on the top piece would wear out and render the razor useless. I recently in this past week bought a Merkur 34 C. I installed a Feather blade in it and the resulting shave is extremely satisfying. For the past two years or so my daily driver has been the Merkur Progress with either a Feather, Kai, or Personna blade. After using all of these razors my takeaway is it's more your technique rather than the style of razor.
Just bought a 6c as my 4th safety razor in my newish journey . Need this as a reliable daily driver all my other razors are unique ones that I wouldn’t use daily . Your vids helped me decide on the 6c thank you brother
GOOD MORNING: As Always a very enjoyable presentation. I look forward to every video you present. I love to compare, experiment and look at specifications. 81 years young and just back to D/E wet shaving 10 months ago. Have 19 brands of razor blades, 6 assortded razors and way to many shave soaps; but ALL great. That being said I do have a Merkur Progress. Do you think I would benefit purchasing a Merkur 34C, Or just a dumb idea? OF course I would use your LINK. Also how about using using plate 5 with the Silver Blue. Based on the more simular blade gaps. IE: Merkur 34C is .71 and per Rockwell the plate gaps are : R1: 0.008" (0.20 mm) R2: 0.014"(0.35 mm)R3: 0.019" (0.48 mm)R4: 0.024" (0.61 mm) R5: 0.027" (0.69 mm)R6: 0.031" (0.79 mm). Just another experiment. Thanks for all you do for us NEWBIES. BE WELL. AL
I have both of these razors and I like them both equally. With the RW 6C I use a #3 plate and it seems to be equal to the M 34C in aggressiveness. Great shave from both and zero skin irritation from either using Astra Greens. Both are easy to use and manipulate, have great point of balance, and have handle stippling that make them easy to grip even when wet. I got the 34C as an open box for $30 and paid double that for the RW NIB. The Merkur had a more traditional “old school/vintage” feel to it while the Rockwell with its interchangeable plate system is definitely very modern and modular. I’m going to have to agree with the video because I’d have a hard time choosing between the two if I had to.
Patiently awaiting my Rockwell 6C to come in. I have the Henson AL-13 Mild and I just ordered the Dr. Squatch Henson on a cyber Monday deal of only $45. I needed a travel razor and the Rockwell will end up at my summer place. Three weeks in and really digging DE shaving.
I've never been happy with the closeness I get from the 34 head. I have a 42C, but it's the same geometry, just as a three piece with a different handle. I can get a much closer shave with way less effort using my vintage super speed, a Rockwell R1, even a little Baili TTO. Putting a really sharp blade in the Merkur makes it possible to get a decent shave without tons of passes, but it's still more work. I love the razor, I just can't get a close shave from it without a half dozen passes and cleanups. I plan to use it as a learning tool for skin stretching though. Because any improvements I make there will be obvious. I also use it when I don't really want a super close shave, just to not skip a day entirely. Wet shaving's always interesting. When I started using the 42C I was confused as to how so many people could be impressed with the results. I got better with it, but it's definitely a YMMV situation. Keeps shaving interesting.
6c for me. You can find your plate and adjust accordingly to suit the blade you have at the time. This razor is giving me the smoothest shaves I have had.
Greetings, just wanted to share my best set up on the 34c. I get really great shaves with personna reds and Gillette Perma sharp.I really recommend those blades paired with the 34c. Super smooth.

Great comparison. A Newb here with Safety Razors. On my 3rd shave with just a Walmart Brand and am already looking for another setup. Knock on wood, NO nicks yet and dang what a close shave. I am not comfortable using it on my head just yet, and I like a smooth Kojak top!

LOL, wish me luck! oh yeah, gonna get myself either an Astra blade or Feather blade, which do you recommend for a beginner? I heard once you go feather you can't go back!?
I already got two razor, a 10 dollar off brand standard long handle DE razor and a Henson mild. Is it just me or I like the 10 dollar razor more than the Henson because more blade feel for me would give me more feedback to avoid cut and weepers. Suprisingly the Henson gave me more irritations then the standard DE razor. I am now looking forward to buy a short handle razor so probably next payday I would get the Merkur 34C.
I’ve been shaving for a couple months with a Merkur 34c. I’ve got pretty sensitive skin & find that with a sharper blade my face seems to do better because of fewer passes. I just picked up a Rockwell 6C and was wondering - at what point after you started shaving with safety razors did you feel comfortable moving up to the more aggressive plates? Great question. The 6C made me a better shaver from how smoothly it went across my face. I was prettier darning going to the #6 plate on my first pass WTG. After using a Astra SP blade on a 6 plate for the first pass I ended up just going for it. I did shave very slowly with no issues with pressing too hard on the razor. I just focused on my technique and let the razor do all the work. I would suggest trying it on your first pass and see where that takes you. Great purchase and thanks for your support.
@@OhioShaves Oof… I’m not sure I’m confident enough in my technique yet to rock that 6 plate. I do love that Nacet blade that I got on your recommendation. I think I’ll probably start with the 3 or 4 plate using the Nacet & see what happens. Cheers!
Rewatching this great video. Looking forward to new videos on your channel...but of course as Treebeard is saying wisely: don't be hasty... so I'm patient...😀.
Just curious if you have tried the Konsul by Rex? It looks comparable to the 6C or T2. Do you think the Konsul is too much for a Twig user. Always appreciate your honest opinion.
You could make a thicker lather with only a pea-sized amount of shaving soap by using a cheap salsa bowl (or shaving bowl of your choice) and periodically extract any lather that gets lodged in the knot and re-work it after adding a little bit of water. It might not look promising at first, but with a little work it will produce plenty of lather for your shaves. Adjustable razors seem like a much better long-term option for any new wet-shavers, since they can adapt better to one's skill or needs than the much recommended Edwin Jagger DE89 or Merkur 34C HD.
I disagree. I get much, much better lathers using lots of soap. I can make a lather with a pea size piece of soap, but I'm forced to agitate more, which incorporates more air into the lather. Voluminous lather isn't necessarily better lather. If I use lots of soap I can add more water without incorporating so much air, so it's more dense and more slick. Bowl size makes no difference as long as you have enough room to work the soap by splayimg
I have been shaving my head and face over the last year with Rockwell 6C standard plate 3/1 and recently got Merkur 34C. My first shave with Merkur was with a dull Astra razor.....What a change! Merkur is just a superior shaving experience,,,,For my skin and whiskers, this combination is simply great. There were two things that did not make sense to me when it comes to Rockwell's: 1. With the gunmetal finish, the top was coroding or releasing the die, I did not appreciate that. 2. Rockwell would always leave red rash on my chin. I could not figure out the reason. The same razor blade, preshave and shaving cream however, entirely different experince. Try both, figure it out what would work for you.
Debating on these two! Bit overwhelmed trying to get into this world tbh so thanks for sharing (subbed!). I have a foil shaver in a pinch, and honestly, using it is starting to cause some irritation and last few weeks finally researching wet shave & safety razors... the foil (braun series 9) doesn't even TOUCH my neck for some reason & the ears & mustache I can't touch up with it. for someone who wants to maintain a mustache, & shaves their head every time they shave.. would you suggest grabbing one of these as a primary method (use the foil in a pinch)? Beginner and I like these price points! lol Thanks again
My advice is to try the Henson AL13 mild razor. It’s a great beginner safety razor. Gets fabulous buyer reviews on the website. It’s easy to shave with, very safe to use (as long as you don’t press down, which you shouldn’t with any safety razor) and the shave angle is built into the top cap, so you can’t go wrong. It’s made with aircraft grade aluminium with very high precision. It’s excellent both for face and head shaves. (Btw, I used to use a Braun series 9 for head shaves before I switched to the Henson.) Hope this helps.
I love the 34 c and Rockwell 6c on 6 plate .. it all depends on my mood I guess .. but then again I probably own like 50 😂razors .. right now my go to it’s the fatguy razor on setting 7
Nice video but the comparison is chalk and cheese. Instead of using the six plate, you should have used the two or three to make it even comparison. You've gone from non-aggressive to full aggressive on two different razors. Both these razors are good for beginners.
@@OhioShaves sounds like a good review but to spice it up more. Maybe use an aggressive blade and a non-aggressive blade. For example, a Feather and a Parker/Rockwell! And maybe do it over 2 days so 2 shaves in 1 video?
In my experience with both razors using a Dorco blade, the 34C shaves like the Rockwell with the R2 plate. The 34C did better under my nose due to its slimmer head compared to the Rockwell.
Thanks for that info. Wanted to know what plate is similar to the 34c. I have fair skin and hair, and sensitive so 2 passes is enough for me. I really want the Rockwell but maybe the Merkur is good for my skin. Cheers
@@tugboat8475 my new favorite combo is the R2 plate and a Gillette Nacet blade. I find that the Nacets are smoother and last longer than the Dorco blades.
the rockwell sure is beautifull. Me i just love the Merkur Futur,it takes no prisoners but gives BBS like nothing else i`ve tried,Thanks to Paul H and Rich Hansen for good videos about it,they showed me the Futur :)
Haha, yeah, the Futur is an angry beast even on the lowest setting compared to many others. It's always fun throwing this one in from time to time in my shaving routine. It has a specific "singing" sound during shaving that many others don't have. :)
It's actually called riding the cap. Meaning you're taking a more aggressive angle. Similar to a buffing pass as Geofatboy would say. The cap, Being the top portion of the safety razor that hold the de blade in place and connects to the bottom plate.

Good call
Which blades should I use for either one? I’m new to this and there are way too many kinds of blades out there
Here is a video to help you out: th-cam.com/video/1-8I1dp93LQ/w-d-xo.html
Great shave, I've been enjoying your content.
Thank you much. I really appreciate it

Thank you much
Rewatching this great video.
Looking forward to new videos on your channel...but of course as Treebeard is saying wisely: don't be hasty... so I'm patient...😀.
Thank you much
Just curious if you have tried the Konsul by Rex? It looks comparable to the 6C or T2.
Do you think the Konsul is too much for a Twig user. Always appreciate your honest opinion.
I've never use the konsul by Rex so I'm not 100% sure my friend.
Good call
There were two things that did not make sense to me when it comes to Rockwell's:
It’s a great razor. My first
I like them both probably equally. That said I have over 100 razors and I have a lot of other ones that I like better.
What are your favorites or top three
@@OhioShaves 1. Yates Merica 2. Shield AC in Brass 3. Yates 921 4. Yaqi Ultima 5. Razorock Game Changer 6. Yates Winning 7. Razorock Hawk SS V3 8. Gillette Toggle 9. Gillette Slim 10. Gillette Fatboy
I like them all but the china knockoff
@@OhioShaves I spend plenty on American made. Just watched your video on that India knock off the Pearl Flexi. 😉
Thx
My advice is to try the Henson AL13 mild razor. It’s a great beginner safety razor. Gets fabulous buyer reviews on the website. It’s easy to shave with, very safe to use (as long as you don’t press down, which you shouldn’t with any safety razor) and the shave angle is built into the top cap, so you can’t go wrong. It’s made with aircraft grade aluminium with very high precision. It’s excellent both for face and head shaves. (Btw, I used to use a Braun series 9 for head shaves before I switched to the Henson.) Hope this helps.
Well said
What blades did you say you use?
now I use: 🇺🇸Personna CC: amzn.to/3HrIAId
I love the 34 c and Rockwell 6c on 6 plate .. it all depends on my mood I guess .. but then again I probably own like 50 😂razors .. right now my go to it’s the fatguy razor on setting 7
Right on👍
What blade works best for you in the Rockwell 6C?
Nice video but the comparison is chalk and cheese. Instead of using the six plate, you should have used the two or three to make it even comparison. You've gone from non-aggressive to full aggressive on two different razors. Both these razors are good for beginners.
I’m thinking about doing a shave using every single plate. Does that sound interesting?
@@OhioShaves sounds like a good review but to spice it up more. Maybe use an aggressive blade and a non-aggressive blade. For example, a Feather and a Parker/Rockwell! And maybe do it over 2 days so 2 shaves in 1 video?
Friend, if you allow me a hint, for my taste I lather creams directly on my face, obtaining a much more creamy foam.
👍 All good
a hug from Spain
Back at you brother 🤗
In my experience with both razors using a Dorco blade, the 34C shaves like the Rockwell with the R2 plate.
The 34C did better under my nose due to its slimmer head compared to the Rockwell.
I totally agree with that. Thanks for your comment
@@green97probe Wonder if Rockwell would ever bring it out with six separate heads so then the thickness is not as bad.
@@tugboat8475 maybe, but it might take away from the weight too much.
I like to save down and up
💈👍
I had a right hair issue
But I fixed it
That rock well looks badass
I think so too check this one out: th-cam.com/video/Zvkd-6z7VaI/w-d-xo.html
my Edwin Jagger broke and I just ordered this. Any idea which plate would be a good fit compared to Edwin? Thanks in advance
#3 plate. Your going to love how smooth the 6c is
@@OhioShaves Thank you sir!
Your very much welcome 👍
the rockwell sure is beautifull. Me i just love the Merkur Futur,it takes no prisoners but gives BBS like nothing else i`ve tried,Thanks to Paul H and Rich Hansen for good videos about it,they showed me the Futur :)
Nice.
Haha, yeah, the Futur is an angry beast even on the lowest setting compared to many others. It's always fun throwing this one in from time to time in my shaving routine.
It has a specific "singing" sound during shaving that many others don't have. :)
@@theclockster Yeah it`s really talkative the Futur, you know when youre smooth :)

do you still recommend the atra sp for the 6C?
Absolutely
Both work good

Is brass razor good?
If you get a good shave I don't believe it matters what it's made from
Do you use for head?
I like the Rockwell 6c with R6 plate for my head.
9:50 "riding the bar"? What does it mean?
It's actually called riding the cap. Meaning you're taking a more aggressive angle. Similar to a buffing pass as Geofatboy would say. The cap, Being the top portion of the safety razor that hold the de blade in place and connects to the bottom plate.
Amigo, si me permites un cosejo, las cremas para mi gusto las espumo directo en la cara, obteniendo una espuma mucho mas untuosa.
👍
Good
👍
Merkur 🤙🏻
Great Razor
hahaha after watching many of your videos, it comes down to this two ehehehe.
Glad you like them!
Me I don’t like to go cross electrical upper
Not sure, I understand
Bro, there is no comparison. The Mercur 34c is to mild for me.
Yeah. What's your go to?

I'm convinced the blade is much more important than the razor. Look at them all, they're all the same
Big difference for me
