A good term would be INTERCHANGEABLE instead of adjustable! An excellent system still!

Just used my first Safety razor today. It was the Rockwell 6c. 😊 Have always used a Mach 3. Sooooooo….. I shaved way too fast, and I didn’t know what the plates were exactly and ended up using a #6. I slowed down and switched to a #1 then settled at #4. Never used a brush with later before and it was awesome. Did 2 extra layerings and passes (total of 3 rounds). The experience was fun and enjoyed the process very much. I think this is going to be another obsession to add to coffee making and fishing. 😂 thanks for the great breakdown and info.

The first 6C I bought had threads that were flat on two sides, and when fully tightened, the plates would actually move a slight bit. Customer service sent me a new handle and cap. The new cap had threads that were not damaged. This gave me a much better experience. The first was cutting me all the time, but now with this properly quality controlled handle/cap, I am no longer experiencing cuts. Rockwell may have QC issues, but have good customer service.

I have the 6c and love it. As to the plates it depends on the days of growth. Being retired I may go a week before a shave - then I use the 4 or 5. But when daily shaving the 2 is just fine.

I find that the media blasted 6s has just enough porosity to help stand fine stubble when shaving against the grain. The weight of the razor is desirable. I have a collection of well over 500 razors. Both safety razors and straight razors. The 6s is a good shave, but I find myself more pleased with a straight shave. For me shaving is a ritual or a meditation. It's an odd hobby, I know.

I use all my plates for my 6S. I generally use the higher plates after not shaving for a few days, and use the 3 for everyday use. I use the 1 plate for my against the grain pass because it's very smooth to get the last little bit I need to get off without irritation.

I use different plates on my 6c. 1st pass with the #4 plate, then the 2nd and 3rd pass on plate #3. For me it helps reduce the chance of any irritation, or razor burn. It's a truly great DE razor.

The possible compromise to try for some people who might be comfortable with the setting "1" or "3", for just ONE of the base plates, could be Rockwell 2C. That one is ~ $30. Meaning, only need to by that one base plate with the cap and handle.

Hi Matt- Great comparison video today; thank you. I have the 6C and the 6S, and for me, the 6S (while nicely weighted) does drag a bit in comparison to the smoother 6C. As you say, replating the stainless version provides the best of both worlds. I do change plates during a shave- I usually start with a 4 or 5 for a WTG pass and reduce to a 2 for the XTG pass. It may seem like it’s a bother to do this in the middle of a shave, but I have become so use to it, I don’t even think about it. Thanks again for another great video, Matt, and all the best!

Just found this interesting and informative video. An answer to the "system". I have very sensitive skin and finding the most comfortable shave means a lot to me. Skin has become so sensitive that I just ordered a 6c. Closeness being adjustable ( twist a knob or trade a plate) makes sense . I've been using a straight razor for years and found a difference between Dovo and Boker, with Boker my preference. Same prep, same soap, same technique and still a difference. Learning about DE shaving, more than one place mentioned using different brands of blades making a difference. So....yeah . there is a reason for "the system". Plates will be more consistent than twist, wear in cam or thread, how far turned. Thanks for the fine video

Thanks for the video. I live in Brazil and finding these razors is not an easy task here. But I liked to know that the zinc razor is as good or better than the stainless steel Rockwell when I thought it was of inferior quality. I also believe that for the person who often changes brands of double edge will have to try each adjustment number again. Thank you so much .

Hi Matt 😊 Great review, as always ! I have both the 6C, and a 6S (version 1). I will say that when I have a three-day beard, such as when I don't shave over a long weekend, I tend to use a #4, or #5 baseplate. If I have to shave a few days in a row, such as on a vacation with the wifey, I will use the #1, or #2 baseplates. Either way, I love both versions! Take care, have a great day !!

I do own the Rockwell 6c and 6s. I do use the different plates. Since I am a daily shaver sometimes I need to give my skin a little break so want to go less aggressive. Also, I am a head shaver so I will often use a less aggressive plate. I won't go over a 4 plate on my head. I love being able to use the same great razor, but tone it up or down and have the same great razor. It's also beneficial having the adjustability on the three piece razor, because it will last forever and not have to be refurbished. I am very tempted to purchase the Rhodium or Gold version from you since I love this razor so much. It is a great shaver.

I recently purchased a Rockwell 6C Gunmetal chrome razor. My preferred blade is either a Lord or a Feather. I normally use plate 4, but as the blade goes through several shaves, I find that I move to plate 5. When the blade slows down and starts to tug, I load a fresh blade and go back to plate 4. At this point I have not tried plate 6.

  • @RichardE62

I use the Rockwell 6C It to me is a great everyday razor. The number 4 plate works for me every day. I use an Astra green blade and an occasional Nacet. They both provide excellent results with the Nacet being a tiny bit more aggressive. I use the Arko Bowl Shave Cream it is such a good value and I use coconut oil for my preshave. Just a litlle bit of that goes a long way. I get excellent results. I finish with witch hazel.

  • @petterolsen4454

I don't quite agree that you stick to one plate because the skin becomes more sensitive after the first pass.
The advantage of several plates is that you can start with the most aggressive one on the first pass, and finish with a less aggressive plate on the last pass. I think this applies to several people who have a heavy and dense growth

Brilliant concept: rhodium plating is going to be much more lubricious than a bead blasted finish. Not only that, rhodium is durable, very upscale handsome and doesn’t corrode. I liked your contrast of the bead blasted vs played finish textures. Spoken like an engineer. White gold jewelry is often rhodium plated to maintain shine, resist dulling and whiten the appearance of white gold, which is actually very slightly yellowish.

Back when I started "wet shaving" ~2013. I purchased an iKon, and it was a similar solution to this system. The difference being it only had 3 different adjustments. I was a kickstarter backer of the Rockwell Razor, and really like the idea of the system. It is a perfect razor to buy for someone who is just starting out. Although, the user might make a mistake in base selection due to misunderstanding & not correcting their poor technique. Still, it is a good system. Like you said though, you will end up using your preferred plate with the rest being in storage. But, once a rookie can get a consistent shave with one blade, they can try other plates to see if others will work better.
Still, the Merkur HD (2-piece razor) is in my opinion the best to learn with. It has the least variables (you cant put it together incorrectly.) Once you mastered that razor, your second should be a Rockwell. That way you can refine your shave to your personal preference.

Hello Matt, I really enjoyed that video. Thank you. I would not have guessed that the stainless steel would drag. I did own a stainless steel set a while back and sent to you to have it rhodium plated (as well as its stainless steel stand). As always, your work was really top notch. I ultimately sold it on eBay because I have other razors I liked better. I did only have the need for one plate, so the rest just sat in the drawer. I kept most of my vintage Gillette razors, the Rex adjustable (a favorite), the above the Tie Slant (second favorite) and a few others and that I liked better. One interesting thing was that after I had you plate it, I made a comment on a You Tube video that I had the stainless steel version plated, and got some harsh feedback from people that couldn't believe I had the stainless steel model plated. In my opinion the stainless steel razor was not ascetically appealing (but the rhodium was!). Anyway, thanks again for the great video.

Good video. I have the 6S and found it to be great. I never had any issue with the feel of the shave. I believe the plated versions probably would be better but it is all relative when the roughest already feels outstanding. I believe it comes down the the material and which you prefer. I agree with the plates. I always use the same one. I think it is best for a beginner to experiment and discover what they like. Really for me it is the same for all adjustables. I just adjust to play with the feel. I shave every day so it is not like my whiskers vary much.

Choose the different plates based on the length of your stubble. If one week u shave more often use a lower number base plate. If you let your stubble grow out say 4-5 days or more and have heavier growth use the higher number base plate. Problem solved :)

I get very smooth comfortable shaves sometimes doing 2 passes instead of 3. It cost me 30 bucks not bad at all. Very good razor no irritation no razor burn. I love it. Great information! I bought a 6C a few years ago and have been using it exclusively ever since. I was considering the 6S but it was twice the price. Turns out I made the best choice after all. I was thinking that the 6S was more accurately machined rather than cast as the 6C is. My 6C is perfectly aligned as far as I can tell. I don't have to fiddle with the blade as in other razors that I have tried.

Great video as always! As a new wet shaver, I figured the Rockwell 6C was a great pick up I got a few months ago. So far I have found the 4-5 plate to work the best for my face; however, sometimes I will go down to a 1-2 for the second and even third pass over. I find this gives a great BBS, especially as I have sensitive patches right around my mouth and neck, where I can't get as aggressive for the first pass. Cheers!

Does the 24k gold revamp shave as smoothly as the Rhodium? Thanks!

  • @buddhamack1491

This is a neat idea for a young wet shaver to have an adjustable shaving system. As a young man you tend to have lighter stubble so don't require, or want, to have an aggressive shave while you're learning. As you get older and your beard begins to get more course you can swap a plate out to suit your changing needs.
I have a nice Gillette Slim Adjustable for my son to have when the day comes that he needs to start shaving so that he can always match his razor to his current shaving requirements.

Hello Matt can you clear something up a little please. I hear that the 6c has a few problems with the centre post screw threads. It's more easy to strip the threads than the 6s.

I think you are correct about people choosing a favorite plate and essentially retiring the others. It is kind of a "microcosm" of the Wet Shaving World as a whole. In other words, we tend to have a or favorites razor(s) and use them to a much greater extent over other razors in a collection and One actually has to consciously work at rotating razors. Combine this sort of habitual behavior with a Single Razor with multiple plates and it gets complicated. ;-)

Why do a Rhodium finish? Just electropolish the stainless steel. It should give a shiny finish without concerns about coating potentially coming off.

Great video Matt! I've been waiting for someone to do a video like this. You confirmed my suspicions about the 6C vs the 6S as there has been some debate about this in the shave groups. And thanks for your description of these razors as "an adjustable razor system" versus a classic on-the-fly adjustable. For now, I'll stick with my 6C.

Ahhhhh....Perfect video as my wife is already asking for Christmas ideas and I've actually been scoping out the Rockwell 6S. I really found your take on the 6C & 6S shave feel interesting in regards to the way the razor glided across your skin. I like the idea of having the stainless version due to durability. How much is your rhodium refinishing service? Great video and thanks for making it.

Got a 6C, and use the #3 side. I've used it for a month without a nick or a cut. The good thing about the system is that you don't have to buy several razors until you find one with acceptable aggressiveness. Please send my tee shit in the Xl size. Thank you!

Great comparison shave. I enjoy my 6S but have to admit it looks very cool in the rhodium finish. I don't use it very often these days since I got a Karve Christopher Bradley shaving system. Although the Karve only comes in plain brass I get the smoothest most comfortable shaves that I've ever had. Thanks for making the video.

Just an FYI, in the video you say the Razor(s) are made in China. However, that is incorrect. Rockwell is a Canadian company. The razors are made in the USA. The packaging however is made in China. Therefore the package says made in China. I contacted the owner of Rockwell about it. I also ordered a rhodium 6S from you guys! Been following the status of it everyday. I can’t wait.

Great review. I have see a few comparison videos where the shaver says that the chrome plated 6c glides better on the skin than the 6s. Kevy Shaves does a comparison and he prefered the 6s for quality build but the 6c for a smoother shave.
