Personally, I love everything about how it looks!
I think the watch is for everyone, my kids flipped when I opened it up and my teenager wanted to wear it to. First bracelet watch that they said didn't look like a old man's watch. After wearing it for a few weeks, it's an awesome watch for sure!

This one is dope! When Shane at Relative Time reviewed this I really didn't get it however, in this color scheme it's sweet. Looks great on your wrist too. I love channel and since we have the same sized wrist you give me a great idea of how the pieces will wear on me.
Great video Jody, really like this watch. I am a member of the larger wrist Clan and it is absolutely gorgeous. as a proud owner of a Phoibos I can personally attest to the quality of their watches and cannot wait to get this one on wrist🤘
I really like this one, and that seems like a bargain for what is in the box. And the fitted rubber strap was a really nice touch. You went for the subdued one, the grey one looks really cool, and the blue and orange is an eye catcher. The design is consistent, and not like most of the other stuff out there. Nice shots with the macro lens.

Dude I bought the sword fish for $400 and was disappointed. That much for a Seiko nh35 that can be had in a Chinese special for under $100? I won't do that again. Sold it and for $100 more got a Squale 1545 with an eta.

Helloooow and thanks for the new macro view. I would like to recomend to increase the ligh when using macro lens. In that way the Aperture of the camera will be smaller so the image will have a much greater depth of view. Cheers!

Went to China in 2019 a month before Covid-19 kicked off and actually ran along what looks to be that exact same section of wall. Guess they'd finished the restoration 🤔.
Anyway, came across the watch a couple of weeks ago and thought, exactly as you say, hhmmm memories. Bought one this morning and then started looking at reviews ( I'm sure I'm doing this the wrong way round!).
Also many thanks for the Bulova Lunar Pilot 50th edition review last week. I've started to have a clear out to reduce numbers and that was on my list.

Arrived this morning. They bought out a V2 in the meantime but 'only' 300m WR and no bricks on the dial - interesting colours though. I'm sure it's also Great but really pleased I got a V1 - awesome piece of kit 😁👍

Jodi, With the corona pandemic "stay home" orders have had me watching (and revisiting) your reviews and just gotta say keep up the great work. I just ordered a new version of their Phoibos PY007 from one of your other reviews! This one is kind of over-the-top: blue so bright, bricks, and huge printed 3,9? nope. Great lume it seems though. Referencing the Helm -these seem kind of similar.
Congratulations to Phoibos for trying to be original and not just churning out homages. Unfortunately this is a bit of a horror show by my tastes. I'd be fascinated to know how many they sell.
I think for Phoibos that ship is sailed)) first thing they did is made replicas of any possible Rolex.
They all do it, they start off with submariner homages, and then they start designing their own and come up with monstrosities. You realise they dont even have the basics of simple colour coordination right.

Bought myself a Phoibos Wavemaster as a graduation gift instead of the Seiko Samurai PADI I had been eyeing for months. Best decision ever as it's the most well built watch in my collection (makes my SKX feel like a toy) and the lume is fantastic! Not nearly as chunky on wrist as photos or videos might suggest either, cameras do add a strange perspective. Only wish it came with a rubber strap.
Nice review for a nice watch! I enjoy the semi-sheen to the brick textured dial when you have it out in natural light. I'm not that keen on the bezel insert though, as it looks like it came off a Spinnaker watch. Also, I personally think the shield indices should be just a tad smaller. I love the engraving on the caseback though! The color combination and dial design actually remind me more of the Underground theme of the Super Mario games.
Hallo Jody, I think it is absolutely fabulous! Love the watch face, bracelet and design. The only little thing I don't like is the hole for the date. Great videowork, getting better and better. If you wonder who would buy this watch, I would.😀
best microbrand selection that you have reviewed in my opinion. I had to buy an ETA movement and spent almost $275 for just the bare movement. Good Buy in my opinion.

They look fresh for sure. My go-to grail watch is the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms and those Phoibos look like flat-brimmed, monster-energy-fuelled version of those.

Jody great coverage as usual. Good choice to intro the macro lens. This watch has my attention because its not beautiful. It's mix an match of details really shows guts by a micro brand.
Cracking review as always....I like everything, bezel, case and back, love the strap, indices etc....however the brickwork dial really does not do it for me.... of course brickwork is the whole point....lose the base dial, smooth off the sharp edges and they'd sell out for sure....I do admire then for trying something new....interested to see what they come up with next....⌚😎⌚😎
Great video as always JOMW. The shield 12, 6 and 3 look rather strange. The colours are amazing and the wall looks amazing too but those shields look a tad strange.
I would like to applaud the use of a macro lens.

G'day Jody, the macro lens is a nice addition to your presentation. In case you or the viewers aren't aware, macro lens generally have a very shallow depth of field, as you have found out. When filming those close-up shots, hit the object with heaps of light, then you can stop the lens down a few F stops, which will enlarge the depth of field. Generally makes for a more pleasing look, especially while using video mode. Sometimes though, you want to focus on a particular aspect of the subject, in which case you can open the lens right up, and you will isolate that aspect. Happy shooting :)

For some reason the dial reminds me of a dart board. Still, a solid offering, but not for me. I do appreciate a macro lense. Glad you were able to purchase one.
I will be getting this watch probably next month, maybe longer since it's overseas even though it's from Asia also. Hopefully made the right choice.

I have the new remodeled Wavemaster from Phoibos. I find this ones face too unpolished and large. If they would clean up the face and dial down the color i would like this one more.

Great review J, spot-on as usual. Love the specs on this one but the whole “Great wall of China” thing... seriously? What’s next? Leaning Tower of Pisa watch tribute? The brick pattern is too much, the ginormous shields are too much. I initially liked Phoibos and Deep Blue but I’m not crazy about their latest offerings. On the other hand, Crepas is doing an amazing job in the dive watch segment.
Since owning a Wave Master I have built a great wall between my wallet and Phoibos.
Does that mean you dont like the wave master?
I tried on an Invicta pro diver and it changed my life. The size and weight is perfect. The only watches I have over 40mm are my Laco because it's a pilot watch and my Squale matic atmos 60 because when I wear it I feel like a G. Nice macro shots!
I've got a pro diver too and it is spot on on the wrist. I don't know why people always hate on them. It's not like they're £500.
I cant say I'm mad about the shade of blue, If it came in an orange version I'd probably go for it.

Seriously I love the originality and the dedication to the theme of the watch. Is it too much? I see a lot of big gaudy watches on wrists that I know don't have the quality components or build of Phoibis, so I say it is not too much and it is refreshing to see a smaller watch brand strike out of the homage sector and into their own prideful designs.
I looked at the site and I think I would prefer the Grey/Blue as the color scheme blends a bit more naturally.
You might need to reduce the aperture a bit to get crisper views from the macro lens :)

Good job on doing an original design, the big shield indices are interesting but would be probably a bit better if slimmer. The case shape is interesting as well. Unfortunately I think the brick texture on the dial cheapens the whole watch quite a bit.
Forgetting about the styling; if it's TRULY a 500M water resistance watch case, not to mention with a proper ETA movement (that movement alone wholesales for $230), $500 retail is downright cheap !

I own two Phoibos watches, absolutely love the brand. I was excited to hear they had released a new model but yeah, not so thrilled upon seeing it. It was mainly the dial and color combos that turned me off.
It's not my bag... the indices are a little too large, and I would have had one shield at the 12 position. But I like the blue and black colour scheme
I hope they come up with a smaller version in the future. 500 meter water resistance is not necessary. It is a really heavy watch with 22 mm tank tread bracelet.

Hello Jody, how are you? thanks for the review and as you said, it seems like Phoibos is finally raising up their bars by coming up with their own design. They sure came a long way from a cheap Rolex Quartz copy, ha ha ha. That is a good news. Jody, as you also said, it has some short comings, but generally speaking, it looks pretty good. Great Wall (I visited two years ago, Just awesome! ) theme bezel, dial and also the bracelet are well thought out and executed in my opinion, even though I always prefer not to have any design nor textures on the dial. Also the price is pretty reasonable considering what you get. But it is similar range as Steinhart (which is made in Swiss), so I can say that it might have some challenges and if you ask me, they will have a tough time selling in good quantity, But it might be just a pet project from Ethan to test the market.
Unfortunately, I can still see a lot of Chinese flavors (I am not talking about Great Wall theme design) on the watch. I can not say that is really bad, but it could be bad for marketing & sales purpose. It looks unrefined and still looks very foreign.....
No matter what, I should give Ethan a prop for making something of his own. Hopefully Phoibos can continue to improve...

I like this, it is close to perfect. Close. In common with some of the other comments, the shields are tooooo much. They are clumsy, and ruin the aesthetic. To make it something approaching perfect, the shields s should incorporate the figures 3, 9, and 12, in the manner of an Oris Diver 65. Now that would look very tasty indeed.
I love the straps, and the “wall”. I want it to succeed. Well specked for the price. But, at the moment, too much competition, for a flawed design.
They may have sent this one to many TH-camrs but it's up to you to make the real review.
It's just you who has full integrity if it comes to chinese watches.👍
I personally know another TH-camr who no longer gets sent Phoibos watches because they gave a realistic run down of the watch. Shame that they couldn't take the constructive criticism - put me off the brand.
They seem to be doing quite well for sales of this watch, in fact the more lairy, colourful ones have actually sold out.
Really like it. Save the 6 o'clock marker ,which does look very much like a pair of Homer Simpson's pants

I really do love the look of that watch, except for the cut-off shield at the 6-o'clock position looks like a pair of underpants. Once I saw it, I couldn't stop noticing it.

Looks very well made, but unfortunately it's dial logo are ugly, also too thick for my taste.
Wish that the sapphire bezel was flat rather than rounded. The rounded sapphire gives it a look of being a cheap watch.
I’m sure as far as functionality and quality is concerned the Great Wall watch is fine. But to me it looks very much like a toy watch for kids. The poppy colors and the corny brick pattern on the dial, just doesn’t work.
I think, so far, the best watch Phoibos has produced is the Eagle Ray.
I have one and it just looks better and better everyday. Tremendous quality and value for the money.

Good effort, but could have done with some tapering at the lugs and bracelet. It’s a bit lacking in sophistication and heritage at $500. Still really like the Wave Master and Reef Master watches. Well spec’d at $250-$300.

I actually love the bracelet, case and bezel, but the dial is just a bit too much of a cartoon-show for my taste. Perhaps if the indices were a bit less chunky and the wall-texture of the dial was a bit more subdued ....
I love the rugged design, the angles and bolts/screws etc. but I dont like any of the colourways or the price...

It's interesting, but it's not for me. It reminds me of a Seiko/Invicta bastard child! If I'm ever in the market for another homage, I might give their PY007 or their Panerai a shot. Love the macro lens!

I love the look of the Phoibos Great Wall. The reason I wouldn't buy it isn't because it is a tribute to the Great Wall, but because the Great Wall has nothing to do with the ocean. Hey, look at my dive watch that got its inspiration from the mountains. Huh?

Great video, and great watch. I would totally buy this one except for the one thing that bugs me about this brand - I wish a proudly Chinese maker would've used a Chinese name instead of a Greek one. Chinese mythology is RICH. It bugs me every time I see the name Phoibos, especially on this one modeled after a Chinese monument.
Awesome you got the macro! I would definitely lower the exposure a bit. It's a little bright to see some of the details.
