- Exploring inside of the Ryde Area Ice Rink on the Isle of Wight.
The Ryde Area ice rink closed its doors back in October 2016 when bailiffs were sent in by the landlord to change the locks.
The site was being run by a local community group “Ryde Arena Ltd” who managed to save the site from initial closure back in 2015.
The site remained open for 18 months before the landlord terminated the lease locking the community group out, as they had fallen into rent arrears.
Despite the council condemning the actions of the Landlord and a large community push to have the site reopened the building has remained empty resulting in the Islands only ice hockey team and youth teams being forced to fold.
After closing a new community group was set up called Ryde Arena Community Action Group who managed to get the site listed as an “Asset of Community Value” which prevents the Landlord disposing of the site without giving community groups a chance to bid for it, The Landlord marketed the Arena at £3.5 million, which massively exceeded an independent surveyors valuation of £750,000.
As this video shows it is very obvious that the site is being neglected by the landlord lights have been left on for weeks at a time, water had been left constantly running and sections of the floor inside have started to collapse.
The property is leased to the company by the Isle of Wight Council, who own the land the property sits on so it would be nice if the council could somehow intervene as the site had huge community value and is now beginning to look very tired.
Without action, it will not be long before Ryde Arena becomes another sad building, beyond saving.

Used to love it, lost count of the amount of birthday parties I was invited to hear and then going in the weekend as a teen. So many memories in this place
Man, I enjoy watching your videos and exploring these places vicariously through them. But at the same time, each new video breaks away another piece of my childhood. It'll be years before I'll ever be able to go back to the island and I dread to think what it will be like then.
Thank you! I get where you're coming from and its such a shame to see places I grew up with slowly fade away... Really hope that something gets done to rejuvenate some of they dying seaside towns before its too late, there are plans and I really hope they are successful!
Same man, I haven't been back for nearly 7 years now and it seems the place is just shutting down... Maybe because its cheaper to take your family to Spain or France than it is to cross that tiny portion of water... Sad times

Sad sight, remember playing there in about 1994 with a packed house, complete sell out, loads of sponsorship, cars driving on the ice in between periods, sad to see things not working out.
From what I can gather it wasn't an issue with a lack of attendance rather the crippling rent costs, hopefully, something can be done to save it!
The fact that I love 5minutes away from here feels odd. Plus I would go there every weekend

Nice one mate. I completely agree with you about the access, something that I have also thought for a while. Also the more damage there is, the better the argument to tear it down.
Thanks Jaimie 😁... it does feel like a deliberate ploy by the Landlord, the council and Landlord were tipped off about the access several days prior to the launch of this video and it took the Landlord until yesterday to finally secure it.
I didn't know it was closed! I lived on the island between 2012 and 2015 and remember this building being open. Lots of places in your videos I had no idea existed, some of them really close to where I used to live.
I didn't realised this was closed now. Very sad and seems to be a trend with IOW. We visit every year since about 2008 and have seen a number of places disappear. IOW is an expensive place to visit, given how far its is not, from the main land (North Island), however it is a treasure and something needs doing to get those ferry companies out of the equation. Like it or not, it needs a tunnel or a bridge.
Thank you for creating awareness of the situation, it is such a shame for the young people who enjoyed the arena. I have just subscribed and look forward to catching up with your other videos.
I really do hope that in some small way this can help those fighting to save the site get it re-opened, I was never very good at ice skating but I still absolutely loved going there as a kid. It's such a unique attraction and dearly loved by the community its heartbreaking the way it has been failed by the Landlord... Thank you for watching! 😁

Wow, not long ago when I was age 5-8 I used to come here every Monday. It’s strange how I remember it so well even though I was so young. I used to get a toy dog from a vending machine and a Twix or mars bar. Thanks, really interesting.
This breaks my heart this place was my childhood place i remember going there for my 9th birthday with few friends when I heard it closed In 2016 I was so upset couldn’t stop crying my heart was broken and now since it’s been closed I’ve lost my confidence of ice skating I feel like a bit of my childhood has been taken away 🥺😭

First, I love your videos! Just discovered them, great editing. You're a natural! My family lived and still lives on the island. I lived in Ryde when I was 6 but now live in Canada. I had no idea that the arena closed down!! I had some great times in there. Keep up the good work. The island is a time capsule and I can't wait to go back with my own family.

This is so depressing! I remember going here several times to skate! I didn't even know it shut!
It is so depressing, the site closed in 2016 when the Landlord changed the locks, without notice.
This made me cry bc i used to skate there so much 😢
According to my friend, who was in one of the skating teams, the motion sensors or security alarm, didn't ever work properly. So even when the site was in use, they still did not turn them on.
I had heard that they got wrecked when they were having trouble with the roof and the landlord just never sorted them back out.
I miss it so much I am going to cry

It's very sad and unfortunately in an even worse condition now, I'd hoped that the video would shame the owners into taking some action but it seems as though they been allowed to continue neglecting the site without any repercussions from the council

I went hear for 7 weeks and then it closes I got the boots then it closed we all went there and circled it and shouted save our ring
Having lived here since 1984 a lot has changed. Lots falling in to decay, apparently the Eden Project was refused permission to come here. It's almost like the island is deliberately being allowed to fall into decay and become a no mans land. My question is why?
I think that its a problem that has affected many seaside towns across the country as the cost of going abroad has been comparable to traveling within the UK for quite some time. This is especially true when traveling to the Island as you have to factor in in the boat cost of getting here. Over the years there has been a bit of a head in the sand mentality, however, there are now lots of talks about rejuvenating towns like Sandown and Ryde, so hopefully its not too late to do so. Sadly not much, the owners are happy to just sit and wait for the building to fall into disrepair so that they can justify tearing it down despite such neglect being outside of the terms of the council lease.
Sad to see this you could turn this building into a rave easy

You did show the ice but not in close detail. Was it still frozen and slippery or was it melted and ruined?
so the ice was broken up and removed by the landlord some time ago, what is left is the concrete base which looks as though it might have been damaged and cracked when the ice was removed which could well affect whether or not it can be recovered by ice if it can ever be reopened

Yeah it’s been locked up for a week now.
I waited for it to be secured before posting the video to avoid people getting in there and trashing it (not to say you would do such a thing!)

Just another building that shouldn't have been built in the first place ,I stood there many a day watching it come together and thinking then how long will it last " needs knocking down and something nice in its place make carpark bigger with a nice gardens maybe , and now they want to waste more of our money at small brook when will these people learn just disgracefull
