Wow this brought an unexpected tear to my eye as I spent 20+ yrs of my life visiting my ex partner and my brother in Camphill. Been inside many times....but of course I've never seen their cell blocks before.
My brother was killed 18mths ago and watching this and thinking of all his wasted years in there & other such Institutions is breaking my heart.
Great video though. I appreciate seeing this "Bad Boys" prison. I hated it for so much of my life, it's odd to feel nostalgic about the place but I shared many treasured times with my loved ones inside those gates. It was very corrupt though. I have stories galore about the goings on between staff and inmates , I even had an officer call me at home asking me out after he looked up my details having met me on a visit to my man! Outrageous.

    • @Nick-fy1zp

That wasn't unusual, they'd do that particulary if you gave the screws aggro.
      Sorry about brother.

@@Nick-fy1zp I bet ypu know Wayne Cannon, he was there so often always worked as an orderly or in the kitchens. A tall light skinned fella , that was my partner for 23yrs Hes actually in Stocken at tbe moment , hes never learned his lesson.
My brother was Michael Cahill and I honestly cant remember when he was in Camphill exactly,..but definitely he done a couple of stretches in there between late 1990 & 2000..he was in Wandsworth Winchester & Brixton more often.
Wayne on the other hand was there too regularly.from 1991..the last stretch he done in there was a 5 that he started in 2009. Thats when I left him..but we are still close and he wrote me recently from Stocken where hes doing a 6. Sad waste of lives.
Theres another guy I met chatting on here about Camphill , who was also in there with Wayne , Danny Dawson..do you know them?

And how many homeless people are on the island looking for somewhere . Open it, staff it , catering staff, mental health / medical staff etc. And let’s get people off the streets this winter. Might not be picturesque but better than sleeping in a doorway. Get the people staying there to physically contribute to the upkeep of the building etc.

Wayne Cannon , londoner , but we lived in Portsmouth ...tall bald headed light skinned fella . everybody knew him as he was going back there every few years for 20yrs . All the screws knew him well, he always had the best jobs as he was a funny friendly nice guy , just institutionalized from a kid and I had to give up after 23yrs when he went back in on that 5....but we are still good friends. You must have known him if you were a cleaner, he was always an orderly orca cleaner.. .or in the kitchen.

@@Dannydawson537 Hey Danny, I knew you would know him. He was like the furniture in Pat's, he was there so much.
Yes its very sad after all I, he and my brother had been through for 23yrs that he couldn't pull himself together no matter what we did for him... we were together from kids in our teens but I just had to give up and cut him out and I never visited him in Camphill that stretch.
He and I are still very close but I have not seen him apart from face timing since he landed on my doorstep about 6yrs ago with his bags, even though I was years with another fella, and he thought I'd let him move back in!! 😂 Hes a fucker and still thinks we are getting back together! 😄 He stayed the night on the sofa and our daughter took him back to his mothers in Margate.
He was back at it all and his sister sent his address and asked me to write to him just recently, he is in Stocken In Rutland.
Silly man , gave up his life to prison and I spent my youth visiting everywhere from YOI Feltham, to Camphill and looking after him and my brother.
I know my brother being killed in Dublin 18mths ago.hit him hard...but I cant believe he put himself back inside . Hes not a good criminal I always told him...😄
Anyway lad can you post a link to or tell me which podcast you were on with Shaun Attwood as I looked yesterday through a few and I cant find you?
Nice talking to you Danny, I'll write to Wayne soon and I will tell him I found you ! 😊😊 Mind yourself

As an Isle of Wight resident I find it quite absurd that this place has been empty for so long! They're busy building new houses on any greenfield site they can get their bloody hands on here, but no one has suggested - if nothing else - demolishing Camp Hill and building on it! What's more, with all the new houses they're building, closing Camp Hill meant the loss of any number of jobs - and there are very few to be had here anyway... so WHY the new houses? The prison appears to me to be in extremely good nick, so WHY is it closed? I've seen a number of prisons highlighted on television that are in a much worse state! Oh God *tearing hair* WHAT IS WRONG WITH GOVERNMENT THESE DAYS? The Ministry of Justice surely needs a bloody good shake-up? We have a large empty hospital here too; boarded up and rotting away for years now ... tell me, is it a prerequisite of anyone who wants to be a Member of Parliament to have only one brain cell!

I served a year here in 1989-90, out of the 3 prisons I was in Camphill was the best as prisons go.seeing this is a nostalgic trip for me weird as that sounds as I sometimes wonder about some of the guys I met there and never saw again on release, Jim from shepherds Bush ,Phil and davinda from maths education with Sue our teacher who was great she taught me more while there than I ever learnt at school. Great job thanks for sharing this.

Fascinating. I've been in Camphill and Parkhurst but only as a visitor many years ago. Makes you wonder what that Tax payer's money really goes on, as only a small amount would need to cover x2 Security guards during the day.

I was half expecting a three story building with a horizontal cross beam on the 2nd and a set of double trapdoors on the 1st, especially seeing as it was build in a time when they were still used quite often. Untill I realised that it was apparently a prison meant for the lighter categories of offenders. Maybe one of the others on Wight did have them though?

Oh and well done guys, it looked like you got in just about everywhere, did you get inside the prison in the prison, it was a catergory D unit inside the main nick which was cat C. Cat D is basically like an open prison, so they didnt have locks on their doors, but there were only two billets in there if I recall correctly. My old cell was directly opposite it, which you were recording from at the 3min mark.
