back then it was prolly easier to make tank controls than mario 64 style controls

Fun Fact: Rascal was originally going to have full analog movement but the publisher Psygnosis thought that tank controls literally were the popular trend at the time. Needless to say: Travelers Tales was angry.

Travelers Tales made more than just some perfectly adequate games... While some aren’t so great (Sonic 3D Blast, Toy Story, etc.) they have been involved with some of most timeless games ever developed... stuff like Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath Of Cortex, the Lego Star Wars series, some Monkey Ball titles, etc.

For anybody like me who needed to know what the fuck The Mission was because it's so astonishingly weird
It was a video game based on a Nike advertisement (funny enough, called the mission), for their soccer ball the Geo Merlin. The ad was a bunch of soccer players trying to retrieve said ball. They decided to make a game based on it

8:30 The sad thing is tank controls were forced on this game because they were popular at the time. It actually could have been somewhat decent if companies weren't constantly trying to rip off whatever's popular.
Tank controls were never 'popular', they were just a necessary consequence of pre-rendered backgrounds and fixed camera angles. The idea that someone looked at Resident Evil and other popular games at the time and went "You know what people like about these? The TANK CONTROLS!" is hysterical to me.

@@CeHee123 that's what I meant, they just non-critically looked at what was popular and decided 'tank controls' was the common thread and jammed it into a totally irrelevant game
The developer should've put in a cheat code to unlock the non-tank controls that were originally in the game before the publisher made them change them

@@Vitorio582 because the founder of Ignition Entertainment created the International Karate games for the C64 and Amiga, so it's just a quick cashgrab to just port it over the PS1.

I swear to god in the attract mode cutscenes for VIP there's a scene where a guy gets sniped in the head, which inexplicably causes him and his car to detonate like an atomic bomb. I can't find any proof it exists because nobody cares about the game enough to have captured it.

It's a fantastic game on the C64, one of the first times game developers got the fighting game genre right. I imagine 98% of us here in the UK who love the original even know the PS1 version exists.

John Burton, the former head of Traveller's Tales & behind the TH-cam channel GameHut revealed that Rascal was originally designed like more conventional platform games like Crash or Spyro, but the game's publisher saw dollar signs when the original Tomb Raider became popular & forced the developers to adopt that game's controls, despite the Rascal's level being not designed around tank controls & having no time to redesign the game so it would!
This reminds me of Superman 64, how it flunks because there’s a sharp turn right at the end of development…

The girl in the casino game doesn't have two right hands. That is her pinky, and you can see her thumb in the correct position under her hair. She's doing the phone call hand gesture with that hand. I'm surprised that made it into the video.

Always gotta mention when Rascal's brought up that it's one of the few PS1 games that run at 60fps also apparently the developers were told by their publishers to make the game with tank controls
Caddicarus reviewed Simpson's wrestling and Rascal, that may be why people recognized them.
And his reviews of them are fantastic.
I definitely remember Simpson's Wrestling popping up in a corruptions stream though. I've also never watched Caddicarus and Rascal looked super familiar, pretty sure Vinny did stream a bit of it at some point. Maybe it was also corruptions.

It was such a shame how Rascal came out to be. It was not going to have tank controls but it was apparently added because the publishers thought it was popular to have them.
That last one game of soccer spy is actually based off an early 2000’s nike commercial featuring big stars of the time, I know that cause I remember those commercials.

Whenever I see Rascal in something, it just reminds me of how the Jim Henson Company was supposedly involved with that game. They used that in the advertising and all, but I just have that feeling Psygnosis got one character design commissioned and went "Alright, now lets mash some other things together and call it a day" because.. I don't know. It just doesn't look like something they'd be involved in.
Love the edits on this one, especially the AV channel blue screen at the beginning and end of the videos. Reminds me of when I had my CRT television, back during a more simple time
Other cool thing about Croc, it had tank controls yes, but if you had a dualshock controller, you could enable the analog controls and get 360⁰ movement and camera control. (Assuming you played it on PS1, not sure if the game is available on N64.)

As a person that suffers from auditory impairment where every sound is so much louder for me, i deeply appreciate John Fullsauce adding the lower your volume disclaimer before the kung fu game. Wishing it gets implemented more in future videos that need it like corruption highlights.

Rascal may not be a great game, on a technical level it's damn impressive.

@@2minuss I recommend looking up Jon Burton's video on it as he worked on the game himself back in the day.
Long story short it pushes the Ps1 hardware to it's limits with many aspects whilst maintaining mostly 60 fps. A framerate you basically never see on the Ps1 hardware to begin with.

5:38 Oh wow they ported an Amiga game from '88 (which itself was a port of a C64 game from '87) to the PS1 and then they even fucked up the port so that the music is missing.
EDIT: Oh wait, the PS1 version of IK+ does have a soundtrack. It is inferior to the Amiga version in every way.
