It's amazing to see what true passion can do. One can see Mangum is far from a virtuoso, yet the incredible beauty of his work is transcendental because he poured so much of his beautiful exotic soul into it.
Not just passion, brilliant ideas, and genuine creativity. You will find dozens upon dozens of people that struggle out there despite being technically and naturally gifted. They also are very passionate, but why do they struggle? They have no ideas, shit-for-brains in terms of creativity. Just my opinion though.
Whatever your opinion of IN THE AEROPLANE OVER THE SEA, it is a truly original work of art, and that's an incredibly rare achievement in any form of expression.
ISIS disagrees; "Showy and about 15 minutes too long, it’s hard to see how NMH came to be the twee-pop band of choice for an entire generation of uninspired scenesters."
I'm really glad I was into music at 15, it felt really weird being 17 stoned as fuck in really fancy theater with older adults all sitting around me staring me since I'm really young there. This one lady kept staring at me as I sang the songs
Daddy, please, hear this song that I sing In your heart there's a spark that just screams For a lover to bring a child to your chest that could lay as you sleep And love all you have left like your boy used to be Long ago wrapped in sheets warm and wet Blister, please, with those wings in your spine Love to be with a brother of mine How he'd love to find your tongue in his teeth In a struggle to find secret songs that you keep wrapped in boxes so tight Sounding only at night as you sleep And in my dreams you're alive and you're cryin' As your mouth moves in mine soft and sweet Rings of flowers round your eyes and I love you For the rest of your life when you're here Brother, see we are one in the same And you left with your head filled with flames And you watched as your brains fell out through your teeth Push the pieces in place, make your smile sweet to see Don't you take this away, I'm still wanting my face on your cheek And when we break, we'll wait for our miracle God is a place where some holy spectacle lies When we break, we'll wait for our miracle God is a place you will wait for the rest of your life Two headed boy, she is all you could need She will feed you tomatoes and radio wires And retire to sheets safe and clean But don't hate her when she gets up to leave
4:50 If you listen closely I think some people mixed up the ending of this song and part 1, because you can faintly hear some people go like a note higher for the transition between THB and Fool.
Hi. I’m very late to reply, sorry. The original song is played with a capo on the first fret, but this version is played without. Either way the chords are the same. The first chord progression from “daddy please…” to “spark that just screams” goes G-G-F-Em-. From that point on, the chord progression goes G-D-C-C a number of times until “long ago wrapped in sheets…” where the chords are Am-Am-D-D. That order of chords repeats once more until “in my dreams…” where the chord progression is G-Am-D-C three times, with the fourth time through the chords are G-Am-D-C-C-Am-Am-D-D, and back to the beginning chord progressions played in the same order. The chords change again at “when we break…” where the chord progression is C-G-C-G-C-G-D-D twice through, after you play that through twice, you drone on C for four bars. Then, at “two headed boy…” the chord progression from there to the end is G-G-B-B-G-G-B-B-G-G-B-B-C-C-G-G-C-C-C-C-D-D-D-D-C-C-C-C-G. Hope that makes sense :)
I think he's not using a capo cause he just didn't want to bring one or didn't feel like using it. He does play G G F Em on the verses but he only barres G the first time, the other times he does it open. Its the same way he played it in 1998
My favorite song off the album 😭 me every time

Nicely said!

Well, thank you. Thanks specially for understanding what I meant!!

Not a virtuoso, but a genius songwriter and story teller.
He's great at coming up with compelling melodies and narratives
so cool how the audience sings along
I fucking love the way he says 'brother of mine' for some reason.

Easily one of the best albums ever made

October 24th - Happy birthday, Jeff. You beautiful, incredible weirdo. To me, you'll always be the King of Carrot Flowers.
It's coming up again :)
This is one of the greatest album closers. I would kill to see jeff do this live.
Waiting for "My Name Jeff" box set. Love this performance.
i hate myself for being so young that i couldn't visit a neutral milk hotel concert before they stopped giving concerts.
Gin I feel tf outta you dude I'm dying to see him live but I was born in fucking 2000 and I live in central fucking Europe. I wanna die.

Now where did these onions come from.
That's beautiful I love how everyone sang together :'-)
"When we break we'll wait for our miracle" This will be my wedding song I promise you that.
Daddy, please, hear this song that I sing
In your heart there's a spark that just screams
For a lover to bring a child to your chest that could lay as you sleep
And love all you have left like your boy used to be
Long ago wrapped in sheets warm and wet
Blister, please, with those wings in your spine
Love to be with a brother of mine
How he'd love to find your tongue in his teeth
In a struggle to find secret songs that you keep wrapped in boxes so tight
Sounding only at night as you sleep
And in my dreams you're alive and you're cryin'
As your mouth moves in mine soft and sweet
Rings of flowers round your eyes and I love you
For the rest of your life when you're here
Brother, see we are one in the same
And you left with your head filled with flames
And you watched as your brains fell out through your teeth
Push the pieces in place, make your smile sweet to see
Don't you take this away, I'm still wanting my face on your cheek
And when we break, we'll wait for our miracle
God is a place where some holy spectacle lies
When we break, we'll wait for our miracle
God is a place you will wait for the rest of your life
Two headed boy, she is all you could need
She will feed you tomatoes and radio wires
And retire to sheets safe and clean
But don't hate her when she gets up to leave
If I could listen to this song for the first time again oh would i
God I love Jeff Magnum
Always wanted to see him live.

I'm so glad someone was brave enough to call out those normie scum. someone needs to keep them in check.
rumor has it this is why Jeff will no longer tour. the normies ruined it all.
Beautiful.
MANGUM BEARD?!?! Well, I have found my new favorite thing.
Best performance I have ever seen
2:08 sounds like he's about to start crying ;-;
+Leavemealoneabout Usingmyname The song is about his dead brother, so I imagine it's pretty hard for him.
+CityXVII Source for this information please?
+CityXVII Seems to be filled with a lot of Anne Frank references though, like almost any song on that album.
+CityXVII It isn't, Mangum said "its about a family from 1940s Europe", you can guess who he probably means by that.
can anyone understand what the lady asks him after he says _it's about a family who lived in the 1940s in Europe_?
Love this.
I really really wish i could go to the NMH show in my town next month.
I’m sorry
@@kymmc5292 how kind
Miss him
Genius , pure genius
You're quite welcome. Thankfully the iPhone has a decent video camera.
so glad you uploaded this. i had to leave early, & i most definitely missed what is easily one of my favourite nmh tracks.
Awesome! I'm seeing him tomorrow night in Augusta, Ga
Ik it's been 8 years but how was it?
It’s not the same without Julian on the saw in the beginning
I don't believe so, when I saw him like ~18 days ago in Eugene Oregon he asked for no recordings or pictures.
Wish I knew about NMH 3 years ago so I could've gone. Fuck
seeing him for second time in september
Jack Iko 3 years later, how was the show?
real question
Was it good?
he's cool with people recording him now? I saw him last summer and he was asking for no photos or video. quality footage man.
fizzgigify some people just don't care. I'm a hypocrite because I'm here watching but it's shitty
Too bad I missed this show. I can't believe he has a beard now.
I need the tabs. I want to play this version of the song. Please someone tell me the chords exactly please.

im late asf but its worth mentioning that this song is played with a capo on the 1st fret. the key is G# major
what guitar is he using?
the crowd didn't seem so bad here
are you recording me
no capo
Why doesn't he use a capo? and he doesn't do the normal G G F Em for the verse , he does something else
I think he's not using a capo cause he just didn't want to bring one or didn't feel like using it. He does play G G F Em on the verses but he only barres G the first time, the other times he does it open. Its the same way he played it in 1998
his voice may have gotten deeper over the years. mine is a little deeper and I play it 1semitone down
ARE YOU RECORDING ME?!?!?
Just covered this, it'd mean a lot to me if a couple of you went over and checked it out.
*hears crowd joining in*
*stops video, goes elsewhere*
