This is one of those songs where not only does every line work together into the song perfectly, but also tells an entire story on its own. IMO the greatest song ever written, and this was a beautiful cover.
pheobe is truly someone special. this song to my knowledge hasnt been covered certainly less popular and holy fuck she killed it. im incredibly greatful to know an artist whos just as good as her.
Daddy please hear this song that I sing In your heart there's a spark that just screams For a lover to bring a child to your chest that could lay as you sleep And love all you have left like your boy used to be Long ago wrapped in sheets warm and wet Blister please with those wings in your spine Love to be with a brother of mine How he'd love to find your tongue in his teeth In a struggle to find secret songs that you keep wrapped in boxes so tight Sounding only at night as you sleep And in my dreams you're alive and you're crying, As your mouth moves in mine, soft and sweet, Rings of flowers 'round your eyes And Ill love you for the rest of your life when you're ready Brother see we are one in the same And you left with your head filled with flames And you watched as your brains fell out through your teeth Push the pieces in place Make your smile sweet to see Don't you take this away I'm still wanting my face on your cheek And when we break we'll wait for our miracle God is a place where some holy spectacle lies When we break we'll wait for our miracle God is a place you will wait for the rest of your life Two headed boy she is all you could need She will feed you tomatoes and radio wires And retire to sheets safe and clean But don't hate her when she gets up to leave
@@marshall1oo627 nice take. I actually like when things don't 'compliment' regardlessly. Sort of like how sad people irl might come off as optimistic. Still a nice cover.
I don’t I think it sounds sadder because she sounds detached to herself and the situation, like she’s observing everything from outside her body. Like yeah it’s happening to her but at the same time it’s not
One of the best covers I've heard of this song. I usually dont like when a really pretty voice covers NMH, the rawness is part of what makes the original work so well but this compliments nicely.
That’s such a beautiful sentiment, man. I guess that’s how every moment is. It’s one thing to know that, but it’s an entirely different thing to feel it. It’s moments like this that really show us
Holy shit I have a neutral milk hotel tattoo I love Jeff mangum. I recently fell in love with stranger in the alps/Phoenee Bridgers. As a teenager (around 2004-2006 when I was 14 to 16) driving in cars with my friends we always played the in the aeroplane over the sea album. Thanks Phoebe for appreciating such great songwriting. And for giving it a chance to reach new people. I can think of at least 8 people I introduced to NMH WHO constantly thank me for it lol.
been really getting into Neutral Milk Hotel the past few months, and only a couple days ago first listened to some of Phoebe’s music. Now this is in my recommended and i couldn’t be happier. incredible cover
I like how the tone is changed from the bitter melancholia that Mangum’s wailing plea brings on the original track. This version is still sad (it is Phoebe Bridgers) but it’s a more sweet melancholia with the slow electric guitar and Phoebes more smooth vocal delivery again compared to Mangums performance.
I'm a huge NMH from back in the day; and in all honestly, I prefer this to the original. The vocals are so ridiculously on point, it's just utterly beautiful. Well done!
idk personally there's something about Jeff's manic singing that seals the deal for me, so I prefer his in the context of ITAOTS. That said, this is absolutely beautiful in its own right.
The Neutral Milk Hotel/Jeff Mangum version taps into our masculine gruffness version, while Phoebe's version taps into our feminine aspect. Either way, they are both wonderful and helpful to the human psyche, because the lyrics are so deeply meaningful in the way they can be interpreted.
Interesting to see that she performed this song (which appears on an album directly inspired by Anne Franks ‘Diary Of A Young Girl’) on a dutch radio station in Amsterdam, the state Anne Frank was raised and where the annexe that Anne Frank and her family occupied while they were in hiding was.
Travis Carver I honestly don’t know what to say except your thoughts and beliefs have been horribly perverted. Small amount of research on the men in the discussion shows that they have one thing in common, denial of the holocaust and denial of the atrocities caused by the nazis. The video is also published on a channel strictly based on white supremacy, anti-semitism and holocaust denial. I think those facts alone should tell you how biased the video is.

Love NMH and have played this for years. What is it about? Usually their records are decipherable but I’m struggling with this one. I’m interpreting different letdowns and a yearning heart that doesn’t get fulfilled. Not sure if that’s what it is though. Figured this would be a good place to ask! Thoughts:
for me this signifies the climax of the album metaphorically and literally. It’s as if this whole album is the “song” that mangum wants his father to hear. His fathers deep depression is established in king of carrot flowers, and his answer to his fathers plea of whether life is worth living or not is in fact this album. this song so beautifully incapsulates the core ideas of the album: innocence, love, kindness and deep human connection in the face of the worst acts humanity has ever done (Anne Franks willingness to live despite the holocaust). the darkness, despair and hatred that the two headed boy represents is brought against this power of pure good. this conflict is the message that mangum is singing to his father, where he says to the 2HB : “she is all you will need”. Mangums answer in this song is this: life is tough and cruel, but it is worth living, said so in the most profound way ever, to his suicidal father. My fav song ever.

Best cover I’ve ever heard of this song. It captures Jeff Mangum’s spirit and conclusions to one of the greatest indie album of all time.

How does it capture Jeff Mangum's spirit, bro
One of the saddest songs ever recorded. So glad to see Phoebe did a cover of it.

when is jeff mangum covering moon song

I was going through covers of NMH songs and I'm glad I found this, her voice is really one of the most interesting and expressive ones.

As your mouth moves in mine, soft and sweet,
Rings of flowers 'round your eyes
And Ill love you for the rest of your life when you're ready
Brother see we are one in the same
And you left with your head filled with flames
And you watched as your brains fell out through your teeth
Push the pieces in place
Make your smile sweet to see
Don't you take this away
I'm still wanting my face on your cheek
And when we break we'll wait for our miracle
God is a place where some holy spectacle lies
When we break we'll wait for our miracle

I used to listen to this whole album every night. Got me through some shit.
The fact that she's covering this makes me just love her more. Absolute pleasure to hear
how did she make it sadder than the original? didn’t think that was possible
Melanie the original was more manic than sad. The song is a plea.
