    I can't believe I'm hearing this from Derek Smalls, the man who wrote the immortal "Jazz Odyssey".

    How fascinating to observe the way one adds to what the others said and what was just supposed to be a little joke became hilarious.

    Simply great humor with intentional twist. Charley Parker should have listened to this and would have laughed his balls off while a bunch of comedians give their humor opinion. Great discussion on improvisation while the essence is intentionally misunderstood, I'm laughing my balls of as well.

    I have a degree from Berklee, I can attest that this is all absolutely true and accurate. nice of someone noteworthy, (lol, no pun intended) to finally tell it like it is. any mistake you make, has a technical name to justify it, an "unprepared chromatic approach". when I got lost in a chart, as bassist, I'd just play chromatically until I figured out where I was supposed to be, and people would just assume I was playing "out" but knew what I was doing.

    • @timothy2204
      @timothy2204 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      MobiusBandwidth the key is to play that exact notes when intended. If you hear a specific harmony play it! That’s what makes it difficult. There are so many functions that notes have that all contribute to the overall experience on a way more profound level. That is if done right. It’s also about melodies and doesn’t have to be harmonically challenging but it is a choice. And its a choice intentionally made.
      Also no one cares about a music school degree

    The Tap are now as influential to young musicians as their own idols (Eddie Cochran, Howlin' Wolf, Willie Dixon, Robert Johnson, Albert King etc) were to them. The erudite sophistication communicated by their lyrics betrays attempts at articulations of life's hardships fully in line with the traditions of blues. The improvisations suggest the ever-presence of that jazz sensibility. The evolution of this band gives rock journalists the thrill of charting the being and the becoming of music industry legends in a way few bands have.

    I've listened to, studied, practiced, and performed jazz for six decades; taught it at the University level for close to four decades; many of my former students are expert level performers throughout the world. The deeper you dig into jazz, the more you discover that many innovations occur accidentally, so these cats are 100% correct in that regard; also, there is a plethora of timid B.S. "social event/background jazz"--most satellite
    "jazz" stations fill the air with it. RIGHT ARM, S.T.!!!!!

    • @jazzmuzo
      @jazzmuzo 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ironically a lot of innovations in science and engineering are somewhat accidental also but in a space that is understood much like Jazz on potentially the 5 chorus where you really start to innovate or step outside the patterns :)

    I do not know how many people know this but Christopher Guest had very few scripts prepared or written for this movie. They basically had a story board and improvised each scene. Now watch it again and realize they’re just winging it. It makes it twice as funny for me.

    If you're a jazzer and you don't see the humor in this, then you're taking yourself way too seriously. MobiusBandwidth correctly pointed out that everything they say here is true in a sense. Even "mistakes" can be analytically described in musical terms and in doing so, appear to not be mistakes.

    My guess is these guys have never attempted to play jazz. If they did, they'd be doing a 180 with regard to their snotty Brit opinions. I come from a rock drumming background (50 years of it) and have played every cover you can think of. All of it was relatively easy to master. As a rock drummer, trying to learn jazz comping skills and mastering Latin style grooves was very difficult. Actually, it was by far the most challenging thing I'd ever had to learn.

One of them, Christopher Guest, was raised in both countries & has dual citizenship... you can read more there...
