*Here is how to convert install.ESD to install.wim in PowerShell*
    DISM /Get-WimInfo /wimfile:install.esd
Note: *look for the version of windows you want - example: Windows 10 Pro* - write the number down
    DISM /export-image /sourceimagefile:install.esd /sourceindex:1 /destinationimagefile:install.wim
Note: *Look at the /sourceindex trigger, you need to change this number to the version of windows you found from the first command.*

Chris - Where is the objective (before vs after) proof that stripping out "expendable" Win 10 processes makes for a faster system? On my new Ryzen 5 Pro 3400GE / Win 10 Professional system, for example, the OS occupies just 9% of the 512GB system SSD; the remaining space is for apps. A second SSD, 1TB, is ready for my docuents, etc. Before installing ANY apps of my own, I checked: Task manager reports CPU usage at 0% to 1%; GPU loading is at 0%. The system HDD activity LED blinks only once per 5 to 10 seconds. Yes, in principle I don't like even one byte of bloat / spyware. But we can't blame the OS for viruses. etc. contracted by someone downloading from sketchy websites, etc. Anyway, my computer system is mission-critical for producing work. I don't even run an e-mail client on it, and I cannot risk having a stripped-down OS with various loose ends with unknown future side effects.

To get an ISO with the WIM file already in it, I recommend visiting the microsoft download site with an IPad user agent. It will then offer you to *directly* download an ISO, instead of the creation tool.
To fake my user agent, I just used the Firefox developer options, with the thing that lets you test responsive websites. Switch to iPad, CTRL+F5, configure and download.

Terrible ‘guide’ - full of misinformation, misguidance and contradiction.
Whilst removing bloat may be necessary and/or appealing to some - which is fine - your other actions (which viewers will blindly follow) and comments/opinions throughout (some of which are A: Just plain wrong, and B: Advise against mechanisms intended to keep most users safe) are in fact dangerous and inevitably validates users ‘Windows-bashing’ when they’ve left themselves completely open having turned off every protection mechanism put in place, then simply repeat your misguidance and/or misinformation to others when in fact you have ruined their experience, not Microsoft. smh

If you use the Media Creation Tool, it will give you the version of the installer that includes install.esd. If you spoof your Browser User agent to be something other than Windows (like Mac or Linux), it will offer you to download the ISO directly. And the ISO it downloads is the version with Install.wim.
I discovered this after having problems with the powershell DISM conversion process. It would seem to convert/extract just fine, but then when I loaded up Win Toolkit and pointed to the newly created install.wim, it would give me an error of "Parameter is incorrect".
So I went ahead and grabbed the direct download ISO, which coincidentally seems to be the version you are working with. That fixed the issue, and now I am cooking right along. Thanks for the video.

I have been using custom windows since i found about nlite for windows xp. I'm still running windows 10 1709 because i have been lazy to make newer custom, and since i want to remove as much as possible it always takes some time to find out what breaks it.
I use WinReducer for customizing it, it can be used for free but there is also paid version. I have also tried Wintoolkit remover, but WinReducer seems to do much better job at making installation small. My custom .iso is taking about 1.5GB, fresh install taking only about 4GB of space. But that is not really what i would recommend everyone to do, i just want to go for the extreme, and it can break some programs or games from working, and if it breaks something it can be hard to find what removed component breaks it.

I remember being proud of myself when I figured out slipstreaming with Windows XP using tools like RyanVM with OEMbios, BTS driverpacks, etc to install Windows XP on OEM laptops that already had XP licenses. It was a bit of a grey area, but it was still better than dealing with the pirating scene / warez scene. And now, I am really enjoying being a total student again learning the ways of Linux.

Integrating Onedrive in FileExplorer is an essential part of Microsoft its business strategy. After MS got in trouble with the authorities for bundling software (I would call it crapware) like Internet Explorer MS decided to tightly integrate such software into the OS to not get in legal trouble yet keep bundling that kind of software as a part of their EEE strategy.
Offtopic, good luck with the soundproofing. I suggest towels, oddly it works better than expensive and professional sound-dampening tiles. See the video which I refered you to yesterday. Focus mostly on the corners.

Matt Perkins, the guy that runs the TH-cam channel DIYperks has a couple of really excellent videos on diy soundproofing for content creators. I'm pretty sure his first video used a bunch of towels. He's also got some really cool silent PC builds and other geeky things on his channel that I really liked. Hope this helps!

I removed OneDrive using a popular script. At first it seemed to work but now whenever i'm doing a search I get a message saying that OneDrive is inaccessible. PITA
The legal angle is interesting. It implies that we'll see more of this kind of integration in future versions. There's no legal definition of what comprises an operating system, but that follows from there being no technical definition that everyone agrees on. So consumer versions of Windows are open to Microsoft's interpretation. Even my Pro version came with OneDrive and Cortana turned on. Maybe the Enterprise version is free of this stuff but I don't have a license.
Linux is looking better as Microsoft gets worse.

I think that towels look better, take the same color as that of the wall and you barely see it if you do it properly. See the TH-camchannel DIYPerks. For sure it will dampen more sound.

    • @ederbarrero5585

You can ignore the Media Creation Tool if you change your user agent to an Operating System different to Windows, that way it will let you select an iso to download directly. You can also use software like Heidoc's Windows iso downloader (which uses original MS links) The media creation tool is a hassle.

i get "The parameter is incorrect" when i try to load install.wim in WinToolkit, also, export seems rather unnaturally fast, like couple of seconds, even though file itself is 3.4gb in size. Any ideas what might be the problem? Thanks for the great content, as always :D
    * i managed to fix it. If anybody else has same issue, this is the solution that worked for me:
    dism /export-image /SourceImageFile:install.esd /SourceIndex:1 /DestinationImageFile:install.wim /Compress:max /CheckIntegrity

I had the same payload error when extracting the ISO with 7Zip. I had the same "parameter is incorrect" error when selecting the WIM. I had the same "Error 11" when trying the command with compression, mentioned in these comments and in that other video. The way I got around this was to use "ESD2WIM-WIM2ESD-7". I'd post a link but TH-cam would automatically block it. This is just a batch script which you can view the source of. Follow these directions to resolve your issue:
    1. Search for "abbodi1406's Batch Scripts Repo" and you should find a thread from the MyDigitalLife website.
    2. Look through the list of scripts and choose "WIM ESD".
    3. Extract the zip you downloaded.
    4. Copy the "install.esd" file into the same directory as the "convert.cmd" file extracted from the zip file you extracted.
    5. Run "convert.cmd" and input "1", then "Enter".
    6. Now type the number of the ESD index you'd like to use, then "Enter".
    7. Move the newly created "install.wim" file into the "source" folder of the extracted Windows ISO.

Thank you for further bloat removal hints. I'll try your suggestions, next time I install W10. Some of my further suggestions are as follows.
    (1) Ethnic language fonts are in Windows folders: ""syswow64" (36 directories, 3.27 MB (3,433,984 bytes)) & "system32" (40 directories, 10.1 MB (10,670,044 bytes)).
These two groups can be removed using Linux; PCMAN file manager, etc. On their own, you can ignore them. But they are unnecessary for English-only users like myself. Do keep the "en" & En-gb folers though. There is no need to install Linux. Run a "LIVE" Linux from any USB stick. I suggest PEPPERMINT Linux.
When looking for strange "hostile" files in Windows, these ethnic files clutter everything.
    (2) The other thing I use is to have ALL my windows files & files on NTFS-COMPRESSED partitions. This enables quicker read-write with smaller cluster sizes. The Windows-Home (single language) is 17.5 GB (18,860,185,732 bytes), but stores on the drive as: 11.7 GB (12,644,433,920 bytes).
    (3) All temporary folders (temp, tmp) are removed from the Windows folder to another temporary folder on the motherboard's SSD. Files in this temporary folder is easy detected & deleted by bleachbit, etc.
    (4) If possible, avoid using the spinning HDD, if you have electronic drives (SSD, etc). HDD's are slow & rapidly need their storage clusters to be defragmented.
    (5) My Windows-10 settings are "remembered" now by Microsoft, with my current user name. It knows now that I do not like Candy Crush & other games, & that my settings are for speed & usability.
    (6) Use the following two TWEAK SOFTWARE to further customize & optimize your Windows. Ultimate Windows Tweaker, & Winaero Tweaker.
My hardware & settings: Dell XPS-15 L521x notebook computer. i7, Nvidia, 16 GB DDR3, 4TB HDD, TB SSD. Windows-10 Home, Single Language. Build 18362.19h1_release_svc_19h2_rel.190621-1123. Insider Preview version, slow-release cycle.

When I tried to load the install.wim file in win toolkit after converting it, it gave me a parameter error. Using "dism /export-image /SourceImageFile:install.esd /SourceIndex:6 /DestinationImageFile:install.wim /CheckIntegrity /Compress:max" I was able to get the file converted properly and loaded in Wim tool kit. The .Ios installed but would fail to boot, loading to a black screen. I only removed "green" componenets. I even tried converting the install.wim back to an ESD, but it had to same outcome. Loads to black screen.

There's things MPC does that others don't. I can hit the > and jump to the next video in the same folder. Which if I'm too far away from my screen to read, I prefer that. Some players show a *history* of video's you played and give you no option to NOT do that.
I've did side by side snapshot comparisons between VLC and CCCP/MPC in the past and VLC wasn't as sharp. Their codec wasn't working as hard to fully render the video.
MPC has fewer problems playing incomplete or corrupted videos. VLC often wont play it and depending on the codec VLC will become artifact city just trying to skip through an intact video...
VLC's gui is pretty gross as well.
Sorry but I do not like other players. They all fall short of MPC.

It's so funny re watching those later (in the future). Linux wil be king of the desktop!! And every 6 months it just isn't or like now Win 11 wil be apparently. But lets hope for 2023 maybe Win 11 machines blow themselves up due to malicious malware letting the TPM chip go rogue.
Who knows crazy years. In Other news: The human malware is at version 4.0 and the cybersecurity sector became aware off the advanced threats landscape and increasing "red thread". Others have a more radical prediction and say: Older insecure networks from businesses' and the critical infrastructure will be popular this year. Rumours say "the strong login +password combo known as Admin Admin " has bin leaked ;-) One thing is certain and known with most mainstream people . That Crypto will not make it and will be banned soon. xD

We need a new tutorial, but based on one who games, shares files over the network with other PCs, and prints (and possibly uses VMware?)
I noticed that removing only some of the print features was actually OK as it allowed me to continue using my epson and its drivers, but no FAX (don't care) or possibly some corporate printing features (not sure what that even is as a home user). As for networking, I assume some of it can be removed and you'll still have the ability to be networked to play LAN (minecraft), or share files with other PCs... just not sure which one's to remove/keep. And Gaming, I assume the rest just gets junked (defender/search/cortana/tiff filter/user assistance etc.... all that bulk).
I also have a question. Is it only me, or is this for 100% of Win10 users, that searching for files in the file explorer causes the window to close entirely and you have to search again (usually works after that, but very slow). No matter how many reinstalls, ISOs, different PCs, it's always doing this. What is wrong with M$????

i just downloaded the latest Iso image and attempted to strip out the image and run into an issue that has prevented me from going any further.
I extract the files and in the sources directory is an ESD file. I run the tool and get from WinTools the following error messge:
This seems to be an *.swm file which is read only and not supported by WinToolkit.
You need to merge this back into an *.wim file first!
    End Message:
I am unable to go any further and thinking this might be another ploy by Microsoft to disable this process, ..maybe?
Or am I doing something wrong?
