I don’t know, i just find that funny. Tell people watching the video to watch the video that they came to see. I’m glad these exist as i was not able to see these guys play in their prime much less (almost) at all
You would think the commentators were watching this pre recorded the way they are calling his shots and positioning.. amazing work by these guys and just shows the knowledge they had back then when it come to the game and also the minds of the people that were actually playing.. this was very impressive to watch and listen to!
I owned this video on VHS and I transferred it to my PC years ago. I have told people about this match over a hundred times. Thanks for sharing it. There were some great matches you had with Sigel playing Varner at 9 Ball. I hope you share some of those next.
TH-cam came out years ago. Didnt need the feel to share it? Greedy prick. LOL Just kidding. But if you do have matches that arent uploaded, put them up man, these need sharing
Got Mike for a 7+ hour lesson a few years back. Yeah, he's one of the best players on the planet, but he's also an awesome teacher. He is also a tough task master. He made me work, lol. Helped my game a lot. Great guy, as well. At subsequent events he has always acknowledged me and said hello. A gentleman.
Not many know about Mike Zuglan. I saw him take down player after player that came to Albany that wanted to gamble. In 14.1 he took cash from Steve Mizerak, Jim Rempe, Ray Martin and other players of that caliber. In 9 ball, he was just as deadly. He was also a top 3 cushion player, often spotting gamblers 15-10.
@@FIVE-0-APOCALYPTO Siegel always edged Zuglan out in tournament after tournament, Zuglan, if he took 2nd place, it was to Siegel. I once asked Mike Siegel why he always seemed to beat Mike Zuglan and his reply shocked me, because he thinks the world of himself. Anyway he said "I think it may have been rolls that determined the winner." The humble reply shocked me, because he is known as "Mike the Mouth" and that's why he can't do commentary at pool. He keeps switching the subject back to 'me." Believe me, he had his ass handed to him many times by Earl. Not at 14.1, but 9 ball. He also told me he mastered pool using a 12.5mm tip and always stuck with it. Players at his level are way at the top for knowledge and can execute anything difficult.
I have the program for this event hanging on my billiard room wall. Back then when mike was in the zone you just knew missing was not going to happen. Old school straight pool pattern play. No draw shots on the break all the way up table and then halfway down again. The players today are great but they seem to play straight pool with a 9 ball twist. Different generations i guess.
Its just that straight isnt common anymore. If they were to play a few back to back straight tournaments, amd they pradticed and learned more, they would develop the pattern play. They seem to be more shotmakers. Sigel for example has three or four ways to play a break shot, little tricks he learned growimg up in an era when starihht was srill going strong in poolhalls, guys today just try and smack into the pack, i do it myself, thats why my high run is 20. Lol
And then buddy Halls in the audience waiting for Mike Siegel and ask him to play nine ball 10,000 a set Mike will say I need weight give me 8 buddy will say okay and beat him anyway people have no idea how good buddy hall was for the money in the back room no one on the planet ever was as good as him including today
Amazing run. I don't think Sigel gets the credit he deserves. I understand players today are better shot makers, but not many of them know the intriquicies of the game and the tables as much as Sigel does. I think it's safe to say we wish he never retired so early. On a side note, was this a double elimination tournament? Or did they do round robin play before moving onto elimination rounds?
Better shot makers than sigel or strickland? In their prime i dont think so. Shaw is a freaky shotmaker, but overall i dont think todays players are better shot makers. Maybe, i dont knkw if theres stats, but sigel made long shots like they were hangers like the opening shot of this match. I dont need much more proof than thag
@@larryleecarr It's questionable on the equipment they played on. They're probably playing with 5" pockets. Anything smaller than 4.5" pockets was considered a tight pocket table back in the day, but on Diamond Tables now, it's standard size.
It is obvious that he extended his string by picking up odd pieces of gravel placed on the table by who knows.who. He also shows an exceptional ability to stop chewing his gum when he is about to pull the trigger....LOL
@@travis02gt Agreed, these were GC3's as the GC4's didn't come out until late 90's I think, and alot of the older players have said that the GC3 is still the best version of the Gold Crown tables.
Really?.. that surprises me, because the blueprints for the gold crown were destroyed in a huge fire before the threes came out, and they were basically designed from memory.. And I think time has proven they were not as well made as the ones and twos..
Sigel is a ego manic, obnoxious chatter box however no one ever has the brains strategy positional expertise and greatness than he does,he is the one and only!
He had it all.. His shot making was fucking legendary, and his safety play gave him the name Capt Hook.. When he was comfortable, you weren’t winning.. I don’t care who you are..
Funny little fact that is bill aka weenie the beenie there’s another video with mike Sigel vs Dallas west and the commentators for that one is nick Varner and bill and trust me you’ll think there’s two nick Varner 😂
Earl has run over 300 I believe on a 10 footer with 4 inch pockets. You will never see high runs in straight pool with 3.5 inch pockets . American size balls are too large for 3.5 pockets with this style of game. It’s not Russian pyramid here.
I met him a few times. If you want to see some of what he had in his bag of tricks, there are videos by him on youtube. I once saw him walk into a tournament room and announce "If I don't know you, I'll give you 11-7 in One Pocket, but we're going to bet it up too." Grady had numerous runs over 100 in straight pool.
It must be me cause this looked kind of sloppy and lucky the first time seeing it after hearing from numerous ppl this is one of the best 150 and outs you'll ever see. It's been a good 20 years so I'll give it a fair assessment. At the time what I felt was way more impressive, 1989 14.1, same event, mizerak vs sigel. I think it was Oliver Ortmann's 1st major us win. But the mizerak sigel match, miz doesn't run 150, more like 105 or 106? But the way he went through those racks with his slow confidence, contrasted by sigel's up and down, frantic, body english, chatty kathy demeanor, I'll take the 105 run anyway. Plus mike seemed to get lucky a lot. Again, it's difficult cause no one gets under my skin like he does so I'll watch objectively
Anyone who doesn't understand what an incredible player Mike Sigel was needs to watch this video.

Mike Sigel played phenomenal and the commentators were also excellent
Grady White was the best color commentator! Rest in Peace

The less Mike (and Earl) talked, the better they played. No one sharked them like themselves.
I wore this DVD out as a kid I was about ten
Thanks for sharing this. Please keep the 14.1 coming!
Will do!
I like these anouncers. You can learn a lot.
Love Mike. Such an amazing player!
Bill Staton is one of the great analysts of the game..
Jeremy Jones is another
At the current time I think the best commentator doing it now is Earl Strickland. He's utterly amazing at that

Mike Sigel was a fabulous player. Like to see more videos with straight pool matches.
Great run played quickly superb the patterns the speed of the cue ball on the breaks perfect very enjoyable to watch
