THANK YOU Accu Stats for these posts. I've been playing and watching pool my whole life. But one pocket and straight and bank pool became something more to watch than your standard rotation game.... Watching these old matches IS LIKE TIME TRAVELING FOR ME, I feel like I can enter another era while I watch these beautiful long matches. So much thanks.
Those records are less than nothing. Titles are all that matters. As well as gambling, atches. I can’t believe these high runs get any traction they are worth nothing. That’s why a player like sigel and so many others didn’t have a higher runs
This is a good example of how a player evolves throughout his career. The John Schmidt of today is much more thoughtful in the way he runs through a rack than the younger John Schmidt. Still has the shot-making ability of his younger days, but has the knowledge of experience now.
Great commentary, listening 20+ years later, little would they have guessed that John would break Mosconi's high ball run record in 2019! Actually just met John yesterday, nice guy and shooting as good as ever! Mike totally broke that cue on purpose, he was so disgusted... "oh he must have leaned on it and put his weight on it!"
I was in the stands watching. Mike was running hundreds warming up for this tournament. I also remember Dallas west playing effern with reyes running a 134.
Accu-Stats, hope you could upload Sigel vs Reyes match in this same tourney as well. Thank you as always for lifting our spirits high by giving us great matches such as this.
I'll tell you. If John doesn't recollect this AS A FANTASTIC MEMORY, winning the qualifier to enter, then BEATING SEIGEL in fantastic fashion, I'd be surprised. This is what pool and sport competition is all about.
I love the way Bill keeps referring to Schmidt as an unknown player.... The man who soon eclipses Mosconi's record....... Bill Incardona had his time as a player.... as an announcer he is and will be known as a total flop.
The mute button is my friend on a lot of these. I don't mean any disrespect to Billy and I certainly appreciate the content from Accu Stats it's just hard for me to listen to. I find my self trying to take a deep breath for Billy.. and Im not exaggerating.. Jeremy Jones isn't bad.. Danny reminds me of my late grandfather so I don't mind him.
@@AccuStats No way do you get the follow on that white without hitting it again after it contacts the black. It also sounds like a push. Bad sport by Mike and poor refereeing.
2:09:40 Now everyone has commented on Sigel breaking his cue stick here. But I'm watching now. And there is no way the commentators can play this off. Mike is a hot head to start with, and he broke the shit out of that cue.
Never liked Sigel, runs his mouth like Strickland, but Strickland owns up to his fouls. Sigel would be the first to bitch about a push shot, but it's fine if he does it (59:04). Pool should be a sport of gentlemen, like all other games of pocket billiards. Sigel was maybe good, but, a tainted career, in my eyes.
2:09:45 Mike scratched and then grabbed his cue with both hands and snapped the shaft. Then Dallas West tried to cover for him by saying he accidently lost his balance and fell on his cue, lmfao, yeah right, nice try Dallas. Mike got mad and snapped the shaft like a twig, with both hands, no accident at all. Mike played terrible, and then he got mad and broke his cue, case closed.
1st of all, no one begins a match planning to break their cue. Mike scratched, lost his composure, & in a fit of rage broke his shaft. I don't want to condemn the man for losing his temper but let's be honest, he didn't conduct himself like a gentleman, & that action was uncalled for.
The commentators were pulling for Siegel all the way and laughing at times at Schmidt, so it's no surprise they tried covering for Mike. I prefer the commentators be neutral and just call the game, or preferably just sit quietly and let us watch rather than choosing a side.
47:00 Alot of trash talking about Schidt, and we know how good John ended up proving to be, here he was a young qualifier, which already says something at this stage. These announcers don't give the players much credit beyond reputation... Notice Mike comes to the table and scratches like a dog, and they brag about Mike!
"If he wins this match that shot on the 7 ball will be the turning point" but the camera switched views to a close up on Seigel and we didn't get to see the shot.
58:56 is when I lost respect for Mike Sigel. There's no way to get that much forward momentum on the cueball without committing a foul. Sigel cheated in this match & if it had been his opponent Mike would still be bemoaning the shot.
I agree with the commentators, that it had to be a push shot or a foul shot to get the cue ball to follow it with that kind of speed. I’ve seen similar shots in videos from the 70s to the early 2000s that were overlooked during that era. It seemed to be acceptable at one time.
Using "frame by frame" video, Sigel did not foul (but it looked like a foul). The cue ball left the 8-ball at a 90 degree angle with extreme english. It curved slightly while going towards the center of the bottom rail and then the spin took over. It was not a foul, but it looked like one.
I don't believe it's possible to slow a video of this quality from that distance down enough to tell whether Mike struck the cueball twice. The commentators were there, very knowledgeable players, & accurately assessed an obvious foul.
That was a foul all day and twice on Sunday!!!!!! The tip of his cue went past where the 8 was sitting…. He cheated and still lost….. never liked him anyway…. he’s got a big mouth….
Little did these commentators realize that it wasn’t Schmit competing with Siegel, it was Siegel competing with Schmit. I love how the commentators are trying to sh*t on Schmit, not realizing he would eventually become legues above them and would eventually become a top 5-10 14.1 player to ever touch the felt imo.
Bill Incardona making an absolute fool of himself disrespecting a young unknown player. He ignores the superior play of schmidt throughout the entire match due to total bias directed toward a "legend" and he continues to disrespect schmidt in sigels next match. The accomplishments in straight pool that john would go on to achieve make this retrospectively clear. Dallas West, of course, did his job and did it well.
35:45 Look at this horrible stroke by Mike. He hits the ball too full. But look at how his stroke curved into the direction to hit too full, as if he were trying inside english. Just horrible execution. There were several bad errors in this match, many of them by the favorite Mike.
I truly mean no disrespect as I appreciate the great shooters that have come before. However, everytime I watch old footage of Sigel, I have yet to see any evidence that he is some kind of living "Legend" that everyone claims him to be. As Far as I'm concerned, Sigel = Waay Overrated. Side note, the pockets on these tables look massive, any idea what size pockets? They look like 6" pockets.

Breaking that cue was NOT accidental, he was pissed.
Yeah, well sometimes the commentators try to provide a "buffer" between the players and the fans.
Not accidental at all,
he lost his temper.
One of the best straight pool matches I watched on TH-cam. Thank you.
dallas west, what an absolute wealth of straight pool knowledge. i really enjoyed listening to him picking patterns and shots.
Absolutely!
Agree. That was the best part of the match to me. His knowledge and humor is priceless.
These guys just doubting Schmidt’s every move, then he just proves them wrong. Love it
how did he prove them wrong? they both played terribly in this match. the high run was like 39.
The beginning of an era... Schmidty goes on to break the all time record. Pretty great to see the beginnings.
I know that’s right Raymond , John is a Florida boy just like us! Which is amazing that he set that new world record.
then Shaw comes along 2 years later and yoinks it away

Always wanted to see this match thanks for posting.
Glad you enjoyed it
The breaking of the cue is something that will always be remembers
Further proof that Mike Sigel left the game of pool 🎱 as he entered it, a hustler & poor sport.
Was it an accident, or Intention?
@@kaivonweymarn3376 intentional it looked like
Hopefully no one ends up snapping a cue in this match.
hahhha
If it does happen I’m sure it will be an accident involving putting his weight on the cue.
@@mattmcmullen8244 Yea, he "fell" on it - accidently !
Who was Mike playing when he "accidentally" snapped his cue?
Yeah interesting how he turned his face away from cue right before his stumble haha
I love listening to Dallas West's deeply knowledgeable comments.
He broke the cue on purpose in a fit of rage.
Very entertaining match. Super impressive performance by young Schmidt!
Yes it was!

Billy Incardona's catch phrase.... "So therefore...."
Breaking his cue, stick was definitely no accident! He was pissed!
The one I’ve been waiting for! Yes! 😎👍
Scmidt is an aggressive chalker! He'll chalk 2 or 3 times loudly for one shot and then slam the chalk down on the table.
Gotta love Dallas West what a legend 👍👍
2:09:42 I hate it when I scratch and accidentally lean too far over and accidentally break my shaft. 😉
@2:09:40 the commentators said he accidentally leaned on his stick and broke it!! LMao Thats not what I see.
1:05:56 I don't know the rulebook they were using, but leaving your cue on the table without your hand is a foul in other rulebooks.
John Schmidt ...Mr. 400. A great great straight pool player.

The fact Siegel didn’t call the blatant double hit on the 8 at 59:10 on himself gives a good insight to his character..
Frame by frame video showed that it was not a double hit.
@@AccuStats I did not know that. I was surprised that both players as well as the ref (Rolando) didn't say anything. Thank you for the clarification!

John Schmidt made difficult key shots when they mattered most. That was the difference.
Sigel got a new shaft after breaking his, never got to shoot again with his new cue.
Notice how the commentators, never discussed, never considered, never mentioned THAT SCHIDT could be the winner of this match.
No big deal about breaking his cue. He was in the business of manufacturing cues back then in Winter Garden, FL
