  • In this episode of the Perspective Prog. based on 'Mother Tongue: Soul of Life'. Mother tongue has a very powerful impact in the formation of the individual. A child’s first comprehension of the world around him, the learning of concepts and skills and his perception of existence, starts with the language that is first taught to him - his Mother Tongue. When a person speaks their Mother Tongue, a direct connection establishes between heart, brain and tongue Linguistic diversity is increasingly threatened as more and more languages disappear. Globally around 40 per cent of the population does not have access to an education in a language they speak or understand. The theme of this year's International Mother Language Day is focused on the use of Technology for Multilingual Learning. According to the Language Census India is home to 19,500 languages or dialects, of which 121 languages are spoken by 10,000 or more people in our country. National Education Policy released in 2020 has strongly advocated imparting early education in regional language or mother tongue.

It's wonderful presentation by Sansad TV. Thanks for the programme. English or any languages is not parameter of one's intelligence. But there is no harm if one learns more languages along with mother tongue. Govt. needs structural formation to continue higher education in native languages.

    MOTHER TONGUE
Well India is a country of versatility , its uniqueness is just because of the vast languages , culture and traditions that distinguish it from rest of the world. Thus the importance of sustaining this is equally relevant than learning them .
The first language that we learn as a child is actually the mother tongue or we can say the language of our parents is the ground relaity that needs to prosper. But in the fast moving globalised world, we are tending to tilt in the direction of english language by not only giving them priority but looking others as inferior if he/she not speak English. Well the language english too is getting a weapon to debase others and we too feel that English is the only language that can take things forward. Regional language should be the first priority than any other languages as that is the sign of our emergence and we cant end up leaving any language like we did with sanskrit .
Well the study of language has a great history as during independence there had been talks on a common language apart from the mother tongue that can connect people and thus Hindi was the second priority for everyone but it was even true that south India merely speak in this language and Ambedkar also not wanted to give sanskrit hindi as a main language as it is Brahman's dominance. Thus the language english was adopted as the official language that time . The dominance of english in the world sustained indians to promote this only and because of this people never realised the importance if their mother language , infact many term their mother tongue as " Gawar " which is really unpleasant thing.
(Humni ke aapan matra bhasa ke prathmikta deve ke chahi ) we should give priority to our mother tongue first apart from learning some other tongues which will actually take us and the country at the highest peak.

Language is a medium to communicate with others and express their opinion in appropriate way. I believe that no need to learn high english .If you know survival english. It worked it. To understand these sessions with normal english is a enough. Focus to polish your own mother language.

Now a days, new generations of even the Chinese, Korean, Japanese etc learn English. I think a majority of non-anglo European countries also know some English. In fact, the Japanese face a problem of isolation, they aren't open to foreigners even when they have a demographic decline there. This is partly due to language barrier between them and foreigners. Plus, Japan, Germany, Korea, etc are mostly monolingual countries historically. India isn't. Hence even if we must promote mother tongues, the importance of English must not be ignored as an official language. For mother tongue, the government must first improve the public sector schools, as that's where most often mother tongues are used in teaching till 10th class even.
Also, see the example if Singapore. They adopted English as the "working language", not Chinese. They had multiple languages, with a Chinese majority.
