  • How to Empty a Motorcycle Gas Tank - Part 3 of the Kawasaki Ninja 650 Rebuild Series!
    I bought a Ninja 650 with only 200 miles, for only $1,000. The bike had been sitting for over a decade, so I knew I was going to be putting a little work into it. In previous episodes of the Kawasaki Ninja 650R rebuild series, I brought home the bike and got her running, but just because she can run, doesn't mean she should run.

    Today I'm going to be getting the old gas out of the bike, and then putting some fresh gas in. To make life easy, I'm using the following:
    1) Fuel transfer pump amzn.to/30aOXbq
    2) Empty juice box
    3) Rags
    3) Black Widow motorcycle table lift from DiscountRamps: discount-ramps...
    The fuel drain thingy is pretty easy to use: There are a couple adapters for the hoses to keep them in place. Make sure to use the smallest tube in your kit for siphoning fuel out of your motorcycle gas tank.
    Once I started pumping, the gas just starting flowing out all by itself. In fact, it came out in a huge gush of gas at first that I had to clean up. If you're trying this at home, have some rags on hand.
    When you're done, I recommend putting all the gas pump thingy bits in a big freezer bag so you're not going to lose any of the pieces. Next, grab a Jerry can that's rated to transport gas (you can buy some at most gas stations), fill up your tank, and make sure the bike runs.
    In this case, I didn't run the Ninja 650 for too long because I know that the oil in it is still a couple years old. Instead I'll wait until I do the oil change tomorrow, so expect a "how to do an oil change on a Kawasaki Ninja 650R post" to come out soon!

    Thank You for the great video. I am going through the same thing and was trying to suck on fish tank tubing to siphon the gas out which wasn't working too well. I went on Amazon and bought the exact same pump you used in the video. I am going to siphon, then dump some fresh gas, then siphon, then some more fresh gas the siphon again. It doesn't do any good to take the tank off and turn it upside down and pour the bad gas out because it doesn't all come out that way. I kina like you man, on a budget and like doing it the lazy way... Thanks again for the great video.

      lol thanks man, glad the hand pump was able to get it out for you!

      I need to do this for my 650 too. Can you clean it out by recyling the gas... as in siphon, dump some fresh gas, siphon, put in the same gas again, siphon.. etc about 6-10 times? Or should I put in fresh gas to siphon off each time ?

      @YouMotorcycle  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AshwinKumar75 if you're that concerned or its that bad I would consider removing the tank completely. Why recycle old gas through it??

      @@YouMotorcycle Thanks for the response, man. I am not sure how bad it is yet. My gas cap is stuck, and I am trying to get it to open. I know there is gas in it, but its several years old now. I am using 3-1 lubricant, but it doesn't seem to move much yet. I am wondering if I can remove the screws around the gas cap and lift it out that way... any thoughts ?

      @@AshwinKumar75 I think you need the key. Which is a good thing. Otherwise thieves could easily keep refilling the tank and joy riding.

    Awesome video man. I am actually buying a ninja 250 tomorrow, for ironically $250. I have to do this though too, because it's been sitting in the garage collecting dust for 2 years.

    It'd a lot quicker, easier, and cheaper to just get some gas hose and suck the end of it. Once you see it move below the tank in the hose, place the hose quickly into the secondary storage. No gas in mouth.

      It ran great, sold very quickly, and I only had time to make a super rushed video about it... Which has a problem with the audio so I just left it alone. Hope it's still out there somewhere!

      ... because oil goes bad. That's why your service manual will say something like "Replace every 6,000 km or every year, whichever comes first."

    It blows my mind you're to lazy to go get a gas can. But you're ok with driving juice boxes full of gas to a store.

    • @YouMotorcycle
      @YouMotorcycle  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hey Tracy, what do you mean too lazy to get a gas can? You can see me pouring fresh gas in from a gas can at 4:45 into the video. The store keeps whatever containers you bring gas in, so if I brought them 3 gas cans I would be out of pocket $50. Old juice containers are free. Nothing lazy about it...
