Got my first motorcycle two days ago. I’ve never even rode one before but a friend offered it for free. It needs some work and your videos are helping me so much. Thank you!
Graduations on the motorcycle VTX are great bikes, welcome to the sport. Any questions just ask. Thank you for watching and all your support Jay. ride safe and have a great day.
@@vincentvaldeavilla9667 no not yet. I live in Florida and the bike needs some work but it can’t be done outside cause of the HOA ( I hate them) and it’s been unbearable to be in the garage. It’s starting to cool off though so I’m looking to finish fixing it up and taking the MSC soon.
Rocco, you are a life saver and I can’t thank you enough. My bike has sat for 2.5 yrs in storage. I ran the gas out of the carbs before storing it and I believe the gas tanks are full. Your video is exactly what I needed.
Happy to help. Smart man to run the carburetors dry. Get rid of that gas and you should be good to go. Thank you for watching and your sub Scott. Let us know how it works out.. Any questions just ask. Ride safe and have a great day.
Thanks Rocco, my bike has been sitting for years, I really needed to watch this, heading to autozone tomorrow to borrow a vacuum pump. You’re a motorcycle saver sir!
Thank you so much. I bought a 2005 Suzuki Boulevard S40 three years ago to learn how to ride. After sitting in the garage for months during winter the battery died. Buddy of mine and I replaced it. We have power. Tried starting her but she's resisting. Fuel spilled, we found a cracked fuel line. Fuel tank needs emptied anyway and then we'll move onto the carburetor and choke. Then the air filter. This video is very helpful. Once we get her in working condition, then I'll learn how it operates and how to drive it 😅 That's why I bought it to begin with. I have zero mechanical skills but here we are 🎉
Happy to help. Any questions just ask. A relatively easy bike the S4, if I'm not right it's a two cylinder. Everything's right in front of you clean the carburetor, fresh gas in your tank, New battery and you're on your way. Thank you for watching and all your support Brian. Ride safe and have a great day. Let know how it wo, good luck with the new ride to great sport.
This is great information. I try to run ethanol free in my Dyna and also put in some Sta-Bil but my opinion is after three or four months the gas is garbage. I’ll do this tomorrow.
If you have a "prime" option on the petcock, a big syringe (have three that cost pennies, one for brake bleeding, one for fork oil measuring, one for fuel) attaching a long pipe to the petcock and the syringe to the other end means you can draw the air out of the pipe until you get fuel coming through, then just let it pour into your fuel can.
Happy to help. Thank you for your insight. That would work fine with that system. I'm a big fan of those big syringes. pull oil out pull brake fluid out. Comes in handy. Thank you for watching and your sub David. Ride safe and have a great day.
Your explanations are always so clear and precise. I have a VT750 but my petcock drips even when I set it to the "off" position. You mentioned a vacuum line, any idea where that's located on a VT750? Great content as always Rocco.
Glad to help. VT750 are know to have bad petcocks diaphragms. That is a Honda recall back in the day. You will need to replace with diaphragm kit www.ebay.com/itm/Fuel-Gas-Valve-Diaphragm-Auto-Petcock-VT750-Aero-Spirit-VTX1300-CB600F-599-O140/232133750094?hash=item360c3fed4e:g:QwwAAOSwx2dYHMtS. I have a similar problem and my tank is close to being empty (not reserved empty). You mentioned there could be real problems in this kind of situation, please give more details about that and what to do? Thank you for the informative video.
Happy to help. When the fuel separates, the water can rust out your gas tank. And the ethanol corrodes the Petcock screen I would turn th-cam.com/video/7Fo9Q93OJXI/w-d-xo.html on reserve, empty all the fuel out and then remove the Petcock and inspect test a petcock. I'll send a video on how to test your petcock. th-cam.com/video/7Fo9Q93OJXI/w-d-xo.html
Appreciate the video man, im pretty new to motorcycles and i was contracting out of country for year, and my bike sat in a shed for a while. This was just the help i needed.
Great to the point tutorial. I like your style! Any help to get a 2006 Road King (Fuel Injection) that's been sitting for over a year now and I want to get that old stuff out. Thanks!!🙏
@@TwoWheelRocco Cool. So is the best way to get the old gas out of the fuel injected road king 2006, just to siphon gas out of the top of the tank and fill with new gas? OR would you go out the bottom somehow through the main gas line or the connector tube from L & R sides of the tank?
What about if the tank was not full…? I’m running into the issue where I want and need to drain the old gas out and this video starts me off in the right direction so thank you! But you mentioned that there could be other issues if it wasn’t a full tank. Could you go over something like that? Maybe if there is something more someone would need to do?
Happy to help. Put the Petcock on reserve and that will get out 99% of your fuel. The remaining amount, open the gas cap, Place a teeshirt rag in there that will absorb any gas and pull the rag out and it should be a dry tank. Leave the cap open overnight and you'll be totally dry. Thank you for watching and your sub Jthejetplane3.. Ride safe and have a great day.
Thanks for the info,I have a 2003 shadow ace was out of the country 3 wks, return charge battery an the bike started backfired now it cranks but won't start.have you or anyone ever had this problem.
Happy to help. Sounds like a lack of fuel. I would test the Petcock first and make sure you're getting fuel to those carburetors that has Siamese carburetors a bit of a pain. I'll send you a video on how to test your peacock. That's where I would start. Thank you for all your support. Ride safe and have a great day. Let us know how it works out. Rocco, I have a '06 Honda Shadow Spirit 750. My on/off/reserve is in a different location, just between the front part of the seat and end of gas tank. My choke though is in the same area that you are showing on your bike. Will this same procedure work on mine?? Other videos show tanking the tank all the way off and many more steps than you are showing. Me and my husband rode our bikes alot, but now he is in Heaven and I have to put my trust in folks. this happed once before cause i had my bke in storage and it cost me over $5oo at a shop.
Happy to help. You have an 06 Spirit. What I would do that is not a vacuum Petcock what I would do is start the bike turn the gas off and let the bike run until the fuel in the carburetor runs dry, and the bike stalls. By doing that you have ran all the fuel out of your carburetor so there's no problem there make sure your gas tank is filled all the way you can let it sit up for 2 or 3 months and you will be all right. If you don't have a lot of gas, that's when the gas turns and that you don't want the ethanol is terrible. Any questions just ask but that's the way I do my bikes carbureted when I lived in New York. Run the carburetors dry you'll never have a problem. Keep the tank filled. Put a little something in the tank. Some gas prep. Thank you for watching all your support Bama lady. Ride safe and have a great day.
Many people suggests to empty the fuel tank (as opposed to full tank + fuel stabilizer) for long term storage. The point of emptying the tank is to prevent the gasoline (and ethanol in the fuel) from damaging the inside components. Since emptying the tank either through a pump or through the method here still does leave some residual fuel inside, which in turn could condensate and create water vapors. My question is, is it advisable to leave the gas door/panel open to leave the remaining gasoline vent and evaporate off? I have not seen this being suggested or cautioned against.
Happy to help, this was just to show how to empty a gas tank so it's easier to remove the tank. But leaving the gas cap off to let it fully air out can only help. Storing bikes with gas in the tank is tricky business today.. Let us know how this works out. Thank you for watching and your sub Ken. Ride safe and have a great day.

Nice video. Quick question, what do you do with your gas once it’s out? I thought about maybe just using it in my car cuz that would dilute it, but that might just cause problems with my car instead of the motorcycle.

Hey, Rocco just saw your video and did a subscription. I had a 2007 on the shadow area that's sat. For about 9 months, I tried to turn it on and run it, but it wouldn't run so I. Emptied out the old gas, but not the way you did. And then I change all 4 spark. Plug oil filter the air filter and it still running bogged down. Do you have? Any suggestion what I should do. I also had my friend come by and clean the carburetor but he said maybe I should change out the gas once more and put high-grade. Guess with some additives? And maybe it would start running again. What are your suggestions

Rocco: Thanks for the very informative video. I have a 2001 XLH 1200 Sportster. The shop manual shows a screen filter mounted above the fuel petcock. Should I also remove the tank and attempt to clean this filter as well? My Harley sat for a couple of years. I can start the bike; BRIEFLY. After repeatedly opening the throttle (with the gas on), applying full choke the engine starts, then dies. I also got it started using ether. Same result. I figure something must be blocking the gas line, OR might be a vacuum issue. Any suggestions where to go from here?

Thanks for this!! Ok so I empty the gas, put in fresh gas. Check. Do you suggest putting in treatment with the fresh gas? Also should i try to recharge the old battery or just buy a new one? Bike has been sitting for over a year, a 2005 Sporty 1200 custom. I just don't want to damage her any further with bad gas. This is my first bike. Zero experience wrenching on them. Also do you recommend cleaning the carburetor? There are some how to vids on here for that as well. Anything you suggest would be greatly appreciated. Subbed for the knowledge. Thank you again!!
My Honda Shadow VT1100 C2 ACE (American Classic Edition) 1996 version has been left discarded for abt. 8 yrs and I finally hauled it back to my place recently. Now, I checked the gas tank and it was perhaps due to the certain amount of fuel still inside in liquid form... the inside tank wasn't dried up nor had much rusted. Thus, I am planning to to drain it within couple of days and was wondering, once it is drained... to avoid the oxidization of the inner layer of the tank, which in turn could end up rusting ... shouldn't I put in the new fresh gasoline right away as soon as the drainage? Please.... your advice will much be appreciated.

Happy to help when you remove all the fuel take a flashlight and look into the tank. To see what condition it's in. Remove the Petcock and let it dry. Take a vacuum and compressed air put the compressed air in the gas cap. hold a vacuum by petcock.run the air and the vacuum will pull out all the dirt when it is dry.Make sure you get the tank completely dry, and then you could figure out what you got. Why not plug the vacuum line port to the carb and replace the petcock with an old style non-vacuum actuated petcock? Seems like that petcock vacuum line to the carb is a vacuum leak waiting to happen. Also, if the gas is old, remove the tank and slosh the gas around in the tank vigorously and dump the gas out of the filler neck. Lots of crud can accumulate at the bottom of a tank sitting unused for months on end. .
Happy to help. That's personal choice. A lot of people like to keep things OEM. It's nice when it automatically shuts off your gas. As for the tank, if it's that bad. I recommend you take the tank and do as you suggest. Thank you for watching and all your insight.. Ride safe and have a great day.
Hey Rocco, you helped me a few months back and I’m back again for some advice if you’d be so kind… I started having problems on the bike, an 08 ultra, heading home from work like it was sputtering and not getting any throttle an was for a lack of better words it would bump when I gave it throttle and it was hard to ride home. It even did it on the highway where I couldn’t get into 5th gear without it sputtering.

@@brookebrawley2142 Any auto parts store will have a loan program and loan you that vacuum pump. Your motor acts like a vacuum pump when you hit the start button and your motor starts, when you shut your bike off there is no more vacuum because the motor is not running. And that's why the pump acts like the motor creating the vacuum to open the Petcock..and that's what opens the diaphragm on your Petcock. By using a vacuum pump you're substituting your motors vacuum for the pump vacuum to operate the petcock to flow fuel. I hope you understand that. if you have any questions just ask.

Happy to help on a injected bike, You will need to manually siphon it out the top. But the good thing is most times you don't need to take the gas out of a fuel injected bike. It doesn't go bad like a carbureted bike, but if it sits for a long time, carburator bikes are more prone to getting all gummed up and not running that's my reasoning. You have to take it out manually, it depends on bike. Sportsters the fuel pump is from the bottom. A king is from the top so it depends on what your problems are, That will dictate how you remove the fuel. Hope this helps. Thank you for watching and all your support. Got a 95 Yamaha Virago 535 my fuel tap looks different it's in the back tank under the tank between swingarm. I'm going to check for a vacuum line I didn't see one but I just pumped it out with taking the fuel pump line off to carb and turned key on and started it ran for a minute then stalled so I just kept using the key on and off till most was out. But it still left some in there so I'm going to add more gas and pump out again. Then I'll add some seafoam and see what's up. My problem was is I did the upper tank with water electrolysis to get rust. It worked good but I guess filling up the tank after that wasn't good or maybe it was.

Don't have a vacuum pump at the moment. If no gas comes out of either of the lines connected to the carb the petcock is bad?
@@brookebrawley2142 Any auto parts store will have a loan program and loan you that vacuum pump. Your motor acts like a vacuum pump when you hit the start button and your motor starts, when you shut your bike off there is no more vacuum because the motor is not running. And that's why the pump acts like the motor creating the vacuum to open the Petcock..and that's what opens the diaphragm on your Petcock. By using a vacuum pump you're substituting your motors vacuum for the pump vacuum to operate the petcock to flow fuel. I hope you understand that. if you have any questions just ask.

How about on a fuel injected bike?
Happy to help on a injected bike, You will need to manually siphon it out the top. But the good thing is most times you don't need to take the gas out of a fuel injected bike. It doesn't go bad like a carbureted bike, but if it sits for a long time, carburator bikes are more prone to getting all gummed up and not running that's my reasoning. You have to take it out manually, it depends on bike. Sportsters the fuel pump is from the bottom. A king is from the top so it depends on what your problems are, That will dictate how you remove the fuel. Hope this helps. Thank you for watching and all your support. Will it still drain if the petcock is not holding pressure?
It will nut work right. you need a new diaphragm and a new screen rebuild that Petcock.. Bike will never run right Hondas are notorious for bad Petcock. diaphragms replace, will run like new...ebay part. what bike and year?
Remove tank and remove Petcock.and dump the fuel into big oil pan.
2006 VTX1300R. It has a leak too, only when the bike is running.

Do u have any idea why my bike is only draining about 80% after that i have to vigorously shake the bike just to get a trikkle of fuel going down.
Happy to help. I would believe the sediment and your screen inside the tank is a little dirty. That's why you have to shake it for gas to trickle out. Remove the Petcock and clean your screen on your Petcock. Hope this helps. Thank you for watching and all your support. Ride safe and have a great day.
@@TwoWheelRocco Thank you very much
@@matienne my pleasure. Ride safe and have a great day. Let us know how it works out.
@@TwoWheelRocco Hello again I was wondering if you could answer my question, I wanted to know if the little white sleeves in this video (th-cam.com/video/2L5mXfE58Eg/w-d-xo.html) are the things that might be dirty and stopping my fuel from draining out, because I have found mine and they aren't really dirty at all.
Thank you
@@matienne If the screen is clean and your Petcock is in working order, Sometimes you have to lean the bike to get all the gas out. I wouldn't worry about it. Just make sure that screen is clean. Ride safe and have a great day.
I put gas in my bike from a gas can and I made it half a block and it died and won’t start now. I’m worried because I’d expect bad gas to run rough not not at all. I filled up the other 80% of the tank with brand new gas and octane booster and seafoam and heet and it still won’t start.
All that’s left is to drain it but I’m afraid I caused some major damage somehow. Any advice?
Happy to help. I would clean the Carburator. I will send you a video on how to clean a VTX carburetor. Thank you for watching and all your support Marissa. Let us know how it works out. Any questions just ask. You did no damage clean Carburator new spark plugs try to start it with a full charged battery and you should be all right. Hondas are great machines, I hope we are talking about a VTX 1300? Part 1 th-cam.com/video/CymFLDrKNoQ/w-d-xo.htmlsi=OzCUdkMy1jTmuVS5. @@TwoWheelRocco nope it’s a fuel injected kawi z400, but your advice still applies, plan is to drain it, fill with a bit of gas, if no start drain that, fill with a bit more over and over until the bad junk is out
@@MarissaTheMuseRemove the breather, spray, some gas and see if it will even kick over. If not, your injector is clogged. Plus check that there is spark at your spark plugs.
@@TwoWheelRocco breather spray? Whats that? It’s not injectors it was running flawlessly it hasn’t been sitting I just used bad gas from a can to top up like 20% from empty and the bike only ran for half a block. I’m assuming injectors can’t get clogged that fast? What scares me though is most videos of ppl with bad gas shows them having low power and breaking up/sputtering and inability to rev etc but mine won’t start at all and shut off 5 houses down from my driveway. Like instantly went from running fine to unable to start after I put that gas in
Edit:: sorry for any repeating of already explained details just wanted to be thorough
@@MarissaTheMuse remove the air filter, which is the breather and spray some gas in the intake and try to start it. That's what I was trying to say. Sorry about that. By spraying some gas into the intake, if it starts then you know it's a bad fuel pump on an injected bike. That's usually where I start. I'm believing it's a fuel issue. Not bad gas bad gas would run. I hope that helps. Process of elimination.
Great vid!

How do you do with EFI Gas Tank?
If it a big Harley your Crossover tube, front of the tanks on the bottom, use needle nose pliers with rubber tube over the jaws to pinch off one side then pull hose off of the other, be ready with another piece of hose to put on the side you pulled off, make sure its long enough to drain into a gas can. Or your auto parts store, siphon is under $10, a small amount will be left at the bottom but insignificant. Hope this Helps. Thank you for your Sub DDias. Any questions just ask. @@TwoWheelRocco right, on a large tank that works, but what about the 3.3gal sportster tank?
As long that it is a carb bike with an Vacuum petcock. set it on reserve and you are good. As per video.
I thought it was be easy but not everyone has a vaccum pump.
