      Thank you for the video, Ikenna! :) Do you have any tips for people who absolutely HATE flashcards? I've tried Anki, Memrise, Quizlet and old-school index cards but finally realized that they just aren't for me. I have ADHD and cannot focus and study in the traditional way. I did like flashcards up until I became somewhat conversational, but now they are torture. I retain new words best through more organic methods such as conversation, music, TV etc. but it's slower and I'm not learning the vocabulary that I want to learn. Please help me get out of intermediate purgatory! Any advice would be great - thank you!!

      Just wanted to say one thing(my story basically in a nutshell). I've thought that I was at A2/B1 Level in German,but I've done like placement test in glossika and it said im B2, I'm so fu*cking happy about it cuz I wanna listen my classes in German (A2 level would also be okay, since it minimum, now quite,again, cuz you need something in between A2 and B1 for my gymnasium). I'm just so happy about it but I don't know how accurate glossika's test is and what is it based on...

    The immersion part is really important. For example: I’m not a native english speaker, so I had to study for years this language, but I realized that when I started watching TH-cam videos without subtitles and speaking to people in English, my language skills have improved a lot and now I can talk with anyone in English! I’m trying to do the same for Japanese, but it seems harder because I can’t find many Japanese speakers to talk with me, and I think I’m not ready yet to watch full Japanese TH-cam videos without subtitles.

      Victória the reason for that is probably because you arent communicating in that langauge regularly to the point it become auto pilot like english
      like fot example you understand english right now right imagine if you didnt speak english normally for like years and only time you do is when your learning it that wont work because when you do something regularly you go into auto pilot and you do it withought needing to thinking about it like for english but for others since you havent spoken in it long enough to be in autopilot while speaking it you will just forget it in months maybe weeks.
      how to fix this?
      simple you use online or basic apps that allow you to speak to people face to face with different people and you do it regularly like once a week or something and yeah basically speak it more because you could easily forget english if you stoped for a few years
      like how most people forget their birth langauge when they learn a new langauge

    The thing that made everything click for me was when I realized that every word in any language isn’t just translating each word, one by one. A word is a representation of an idea, so when you hear a word, you need to associate it with that idea, so that the idea pops into your brain right when you hear it. It also helps to try to not translate every word one by one when you’re reading. You have you do the first step I said, so that you can read the sentence in one file and try to get the main idea. It really helps, because translating each word one by one and taking your time isn’t nearly as effective

    • @trishaniweller1931

      This is something I'm learning too. I used to try and translate each word whenever I hear or read anything in my target language but then I started realizing that it was not effective at all. Now, I just try to get a general idea of what's being said

    I think another thing that hinders people from progressing further from the intermediate level is that they are already functionally-able in that language--meaning, they are already considered a "speaker of that language". That complacency sets them into an impasse where they are already contented and make no further attempt to progress and basically just turn to another language or even completely stop at their target language because a lot of them are like "heyyy seems like my [insert target language] is already viable, well--on to the next one"

    • @elizabethfolkers1836
      @elizabethfolkers1836 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I think that’s why the immersion technique becomes very helpful, but you could also target practice numbers too. In Spanish, I never really knew my numbers until I handled currency in a Spanish speaking country and when I handled US currency with Spanish speakers in the US. That type of practice really helped me solifiy my numbers.

    • @az5428
      @az5428 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I personally feel like numbers are one of the easiest parts of a language. Most people already know some Spanish numbers, Uno dos tres cuatro cinco... Theres always a pattern. Im trying to study Japanese a bit. I already know how count up to 10,000 and ive only studied the numbers for a day or two. You just have to find the pattern.

      Steve Kaufmann also talks about this when he refers to the language "hockey stick". The curve of the stick at the bottom is the beginner to intermediate stage, it's short and you move up quickly. Then, once you hit intermediate, you're on the "shaft" of the hockey stick, which is a long, steady, and slower grind. :)

      Isn’t harder to learn a language once you already know a bunch of languages in the same branch? Like obviously if you know French learning Spanish will be easier because they’re both Romance languages. However, once you start learning more don’t you begin to mix up the languages?

    • @NewBlueTrue
      @NewBlueTrue 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Water Bottle No, it’s easier because since the languages are similar the meaning of words that look and sound alike are easier to retain. And on top of that you can connect the new words you are learning to a language you already know.
      If you speak English, you can probably pick up one of those Caribbean languages easily. It’s not English, but it’s close enough to where someone who does speak English can understand them even if they don’t know the language.
      If you’re not at fluency level, yeah, you can mix them up. Say you don’t remember a word in a certain language, but you remember the word in a different language. You’ll mix them up in that context

    • @cuchicheo88
      @cuchicheo88 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I grew up speaking Spanish (as a second language) and I have been distancing myself from the particulars because I really want to master Català, and it's close enough for confusion, if I don't really prioritize it as distinct. Mixing languages is absolutely an issue, when languages become too close. However, I do think the level of phonological difference between German and Dutch, say, make them harder to confuse than Spanish and Italian. I would say European or African Portuguese is probably distinct enough from Spanish to fall somewhere between these examples. I do confuse Brazilian Portuguese, though. My brain treats it too much like Spanish, and listening to it for extended periods frequently messes up my Spanish.

    Wow finally you replied to my requests! The video I kept waiting for!
    Ok edit after watching: Thanks for the video I really wanted to have your insight on this. I feel really confirmed in my approach. I really did feel like ai got stuck for a long time and now did go back to the good physical classic flashcard box system. It took way too long to creat them all but so happy it is done I am now on my deck of HSK 5 vocabulary 🙏🏼 The further I get the more I struggle thou to keep memorizing new words while repeating old ones. I when I feel safe about a word I do move it in a "wait 1 / 2 /5 / 8 weeks later" box but the more I continue the more I have to review and notice I also forget sometimes until they are solid enough to put away for 8 weeks etc. But like you mention there is no use of it if you forget previously learned ones.. 🤷‍♀️
    I guess slow but steady wins the race... I'm still impressed by you being able to handle ohone calls in Mandarin! Like damn I still ended up getting the chills when my didi (uber) would call to confirm my location when I was in China 🤦‍♀️ Was so proud when I managed to confirm that I will come to the school gate to pick up my delivery food 🤣 But then at least I knew the topic!
    It's besond me that you picked up on this language so fast.. I did invest a lot into studying how to text / read which I know you didn't but still... Envy you!

      Neon Wombat Well I do take my language learning pretty seriously actally and I have been in China for a decent amount of time too actually so it's still kinda harsh seeing someone becoming fluent so fast who has never been in China even!
      But I mean I have always struggled with languages. I know most people say that but it's really true for me I first started creating sentences at 3 and only became alright in my mothertongue once I learned reading around 6-7yo! Had a hearing problem which was not diagnosed early enough. And was put into the German extra classes with all foreign kids that had to catch up with the local language 🤦‍♀️ Without my diagnose I really just felt treated like a mentally challenged kid so yey me chosing a TONAL LANGUAGE to learn how to pick up languages 😂😂😂

    Speaking of Anki, do you know of a way to keep separate Anki decks for different languages, while avoiding the risk of having "double" cards because the languages happen to have a word in common or even a word that just happens to be written the same? Because I haven't found a way to do that easily, other than maybe adding the initials of the language between brackets after the word so Anki thinks they are different. To give a specific example, I have been studying Spanish (and will be for the foreseeable future), but what if I want to improve my French or pick up Portuguese? What can I do to keep their vocabularies fully separate in the eyes of Anki, other than what I already described?

    • @cuchicheo88
      @cuchicheo88 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Alfredo Müller Etxeberria Respectfully, I believe my plateaus arise from a different source, which is shared by many (especially in less commonly taught languages or nonstandard dialectical varieties of a language). Most accessible formal resources for these languages are aimed at providing the rough equivalent of two years' college study in a language. Pedagogy has a way of standardizing what people have access to and what they have not. They may provide additional grammar resources, beyond this point, but grammar is hardly the be all and end all of comprehension. As a person who began in Sanskritics and has many dead languages under her belt, I can attest to the difference between what it is to "know" a language and to actually understand it, as it passes in real time (even in reading).

    • @cuchicheo88
      @cuchicheo88 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Alfredo Müller Etxeberria One of the most important things to do, in cases like this, is to change one's frame of reference and motivation, to rely on more primary source material and to focus on mastering different kinds of things than one began with.

    I have been stuck at lower advanced level in English for a while now. I have never been to an English speaking country and I have been teaching myself. Movies, books and talking to native speakers have helped a lot.(My cousins are native English speakers).
    The other problem I have been facing is I am not able to apply the tactics I used to learn English on the other languages I am learning which are Spanish(A2-B1) and Chinese(A2). I think it is because I reached a long time ago; I reached B1 level by the time I was 11 or 12 and B2 by the age of 15 or 16, now I am about 20 something. And I started this languages about 2 years and few months ago.(On and off though).

    Have you watched the video from @MattvsJapan about when to retire words on Anki? He’s a big Anki fan but talks about the tyranny of flash cards when you reach a higher fluency and large vocabulary. Because of all the reviews, he was reaching a point where Anki was taking up too much of his day and interfering with general immersion. He realized once the review time for the word was longer than the frequency he’d be exposed to it in regular use of the language, it was time to retire that Anki card. This is all to say Anki is a tool to improve efficiency in memory but the goal should be to eventually retire all your cards and learn through the language.

    Honestly, the real thing that got me to fluency was to watch youtube videos in my target language without subtitles. And if you want to only watch videos in your target language, let's say Russian, then what you need to do is to create a new Google account and when you first connect on TH-cam, with this new Google account you need to subscribe to a channel from the country from which you want to learn from. For example, if I'm learning Russian, then i would create a new google account, and then i would first subscribe to a Russian youtube channel. I would then only have russian youtube videos. So, yeah, do this and in 9 months to 1 year, you can get pretty freaking fluent i swear. That's what i did and it worked. Hope this helps :).
