    Sup party peeps, in this video I go over how to learn a language when you don't have much free time. Learning a new language fast doesn't mean 10 minutes a day. It means 30-60 mins a day for a much shorter overall duration.

    I am living in Croatia for a short-term and plan to return for a longer stint this coming summer. A great source I have found is the Croaticum program through a university in Zagreb. A1 and A2 Croatian classes online are free. I believe there are 80 units in all that they say are approximately 45 minutes each. I have found that each unit can be much longer because the quizes that they give must be complete at 100% before you can move on to the next session. Although it was very aggravating at first bc it was taking so much time, but it has made me repeat information and actually learn it.

    How do you work on listening skills? I have been studying Spanish on and off for 3 years and I still don't understand 100% of what people are saying. I get about 30-70% of what is being said. And I never understand music without looking at the lyrics. It's a shame. I would like to study other languages, but I haven't reached a satisfactory level in Spanish listening.

    • @valeriavelz
      @valeriavelz 5 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      probably because there are so many different spoken dialects and slang that may vary depending on the region, you are probably studying Spanish from Spain and listening to Puerto Rican music, so u got to identify the type of Spanish that you want to learn, and if you already know it then its just a matter of time and practice

    • @blackheartcardigan
      @blackheartcardigan 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@valeriavelz nope! The Spanish from Spain is my least favorite. I listen to mostly Caribbean Spanish---Cuban, Puerto Rican, and Dominican. My favorite Andean accents are from Venezuela and Colombia (and yes, I know that each country, especially Colombia, has different accents within its borders). But for example, when it comes to music no entiendo casi nada de esta mierda de Bad Bunny (it's the same waywith Angel Caneles, Joe Arroyo and La Buena Vista Social Club); however, I find Selena's Spanish to be very understandable. It's all hit or miss for me, and most times I'm missing. I don't know what it's going to take.

      I used to be the same way! Even after studying in the south of Spain for 3 months, while I could speak fluently listening always gave me trouble. I was so bad that even now when I hear someone I'm amazed I can understand everything they're saying. First off, if you can just go somewhere for as long as you can and literally just not speak English the entire time, your listening will get significantly better immediately, just by matter of necessity. If you can go alone without other English speakers, even better. That's what kind of topped it off for me when I went to work in Barcelona for two months. Before that though, I just watched a bunch of Spanish movies and TV shows with subitltes in Spanish, which 100% is probably best way to improve your listening, even over having an actual conversation with someone.

    hey Ikenna, you mentioned Assimil and Pimsleur. I use Assimil for Chinese now, is Pimsleur also good for Chinese? Assimil is very good but not for all languages the same..

    Question for people who learned Latin or people who learned some Slavic language while not being native speaker of any Slavic language, how did you learn grammatical cases, not how to write them, but when you speak, how did you learn to use correct forms of nouns while you are speaking ?

    I'm currently learning Japanese, but I don't have time at all. I have to watch anime with sub, listen to japanese music, I have to watch Japanese TV shows.... wait sorry let me rephrase this. I have a whole 10 to 16 hours of free time and I spend it doing what I love to do everyday which is watching anime (with sub), listen to Japanese music, and watch Japanese TV shows (is still kinda anime related, is Takagi-san voice actress and Niskata voice actor on TV doing teasing and other stuff). I also spend about 1 hour on Pimsleur a day (which is equivalent to two lesson a day). I also spend a lot of time on Anki (btw Anki is awesome just like Ikenna keeps saying, you have to check it out at least once if you're learning languages).

    you're so mean to Duolingo lol but I find it very useful on its own. It teaches you like a child learns a language and if you stick to it and repeat, you will get useful phrases you can mix and match and you will definitely pick the vocabulary up listening to podcasts and watching TV as well. listening is definitely key and i like how you explained input/output. i haven't seen you mention an app called Lingodeer which is where i'm learning Japanese and Chinese (as of now, it also has Spanish and German). i started my language learning journey with Spanish and it took me FOREVER to learn because i wasn't learning outside of the classroom. but i find everything you say to be very correct. i also find reading useful. especially out loud. reading comprehension is a key way to know you are learning (romantic) languages. do you plan to take the japanese or chinese langauge tests?

    Would you say that Busuu is a good main program to learn a language, obviously not just ten minutes a day or should it be used as a supplement? I'm asking this because Idk if I should keep using Busuu as a main or switch to Pimsluer?
