If that principal doesn't make $750k a year, she should be. She is caring, loving person. A role model that is truly is in it for her kids, her students. The type of principal we need in all schools. Watching her cry after working so hard to help theses kids get into collage only to fail due to a few hundred bucks. Heartbreaking.

Actually you guys are very false I live in philadelphia and we have two of the best magnet schools in PA . I went to the middle school of one which is 60 in the nationan aka Masterman. And now I am going to the other Central High. Both schools are free and if you have good grades you will get in. Transportation is free because of tranpasses. There is also many other magnet schools that are violence free.

Philadelphia Public Schools have a busing program to other schools, that's why this school has only 400 +students. I grew up in a great diverse neighborhood. We didn't grow up around violence it was un-heard of then I attended my local public high school with over 3k students must of them being bused in from neighborhoods like Strawberry Mansion. Yes, some come to learn others came to destroy and act a muck.

The actual reason is poverty and the way society is run. Because almost every person in the school is most likely living below the poverty line and the school gets little funding, it leads to people fighting out of stress and anger. Though the parents are not at fault, drug abuse is rampant among impoverished people. The school is trying it's hardest with the amount of funding, but in reality, the system that the country is running under is creating these environments.

I break down probably at least once a week after school. I have anxiety and I always feel like school eats away my life and is just some test for my mental health that I never seem to pass. I don’t see how it will stop but honestly, this video made me a little more grateful for what I have. I don’t feel safe in school, but for some reason now I feel safer
Hey, i understand what you're feeling is hard, and it is very valid! You can and you will get through all of it. You will finally stop having breakdowns someday, you will finally feel happy you went through all of that yourself, feel proud of yourself, because you are so much more than just your anxiety and your tears, just pull through okay, everything will be better someday. I promise. And no, I don't think you should drop out "cause your weak" or "weaker than anybody else", school is honestly difficult, but it can lead us to a good future. For many of those students who get in trouble at school and with the law, it's not necessarily they are "bad" kids. Many of them, given their living and family conditions, don't have positive role models to look up to, hence the cycle of violence and aggression is allowed to continue.
I give my time to volunteer with students in after school programs at an inner city school in my community and while I cannot fix their home and family problems, I'm grateful to be able to connect with them and provide them with a positive role model they can look up to and relate with. It's proven that youth who have positive role models are more likely to succeed in school and are less likely to get in trouble with the law. Now if only after school programs would stop ending up on the chopping block for government funding because these programs really work.
I have major respect for that principal, and I feel so proud to work (volunteer) with at-risk children in my community.

Its a horrible statistic for sure but I don't think it's as cut and dry as it looks. You never know what's happening behind the scenes. How many of those kids even have parents vs grandparents who might not be able to make the trip, or how about a single mom whose working three jobs. I'm sure there are more parents who want to be there but can't for whatever reason. No one wants to live in poverty..

That's just sad. I went to what was called the best high school in the state of New Jersey and 30 years later I see people who didn't respect that opportunity fall by the side off the road. Education is the the key that unlocks your future.

This almost brought me to tears. These children are products of their environments and the odds are stacked against them. My daughter was being bullied several years ago and while I gave her all the tools I could think to give to combat it, I also instilled compassion and empathy in her. I explained to her that many times the kids who are bullies come from broken and troubled homes and are hurting other people because they themselves are hurting inside. That really helped her a lot and thankfully she overcame it. Here in Florida where I live, they have a summer time free lunch program where you can bring your children to public libraries and other places each weekday to receive a free lunch. The reason why they run this program is because there are so many children who’s only meal for the day is what they eat at school so in the summer without this program, many children go hungry. I immediately thought of this when I saw nothing but a small pot of potatoes cooking for dinner in this boy’s bedroom. That was just so sad. As much money that this country has, this should never be. While I understand people’s passion in wanting to help starving children and endangered animals in other countries, I wish we all fully understood and grasped the misfortune that people are experiencing right here on American soil.

What a great principal....telling those kids they're loved...you know most of them prolly didn't hear that before she said it. It's sad cause you know she wants the best for all of them but the odds just aren't in their favor.

That's why she is working so hard. She knows that she & the people in that school are for some kids the only resource to improve their lives. Most parents want more for their kids but they don't always have the means to make that happen & I can't imagine how hard that must be. Too many schools administrators even in high performing schools are too quick to give up on their students esp ones that are more difficult cases (discipline issues, academically struggling, special needs, families with limited means or home issues, etc) because they don't think they can help. Giving up on a child is the worst thing you can do as an educator, because that tells them they are not worth the time so why should they try if those whose job is to help them won't? This makes me so sad but it is a good feeling to know people like this woman are still out there. I wish all of these kids nothing but the best for their lives and their loved ones

Man, I thought my school was ghetto, I take that back because even though my school needed the swat team to come and fix a huge fight, this in Chicago by the way, no not suburbs but actual south westside, this is more than just an everyday occurrence.
I'm in school right now and I have sort of taken it for granted but these kids that actually want an education are going to be the good adults in the future.

I grew up in neighbourhoods like this. What I found is, a lot of times, these parents work low-paying jobs that require them to work many hours to make ends meet so they can’t be around enough to discipline or bond with them, or the parents are struggling with substance abuse due to trauma that they don’t have support through. For example, knew a single mom that worked her ass off to help her 3 kids after her husband died. Then her oldest kid got shot and she fell into depression, couldn’t be there mentally or financially for her other 2. But that was one of many examples. yes, there are many parents that have the ability to but fail to take ownership and discipline properly. But many more who are stuck in a broken system who can’t get out for many reasons. And it’s generational. It’s tough for kids who didn’t have parents around to then know how to parent when they have kids. It’s also tough for parents to know what to do when you see kids that were over-disciplined by scared strict parents, and kids that were not disciplined at all, both end up in jail, on the streets, or dead, due to external reasons. At that point, it becomes tough for a parent to know if it was due to internal or external reasons and end up not knowing how to parent/practice inconsistent parenting. Thankfully, I was only in those neighbourhoods for a few years as my parents were immigrants living there as they built themselves here, but I could see how people could easily get stuck there! It’s a complex situation that requires a lot of empathy....

The school building is good, and the district pours a lot of money towards these kids. Unfortunately, the fights, absences, drug use, and bad grades are often symptoms of unstable family life. Malaysia is one of the only kids who has a good and caring dad at home, and she gets bullied for being smart. I hope she finds success in life!
These poor mothers fall for a guy not fit for anything but making more babies and running are trying to raise them in horrible conditions. Most don’t have a prayer. Why do they live there? There are places where they can raise these kids in safety. It do sent take that much!

It’s so sad because at that age you don’t even know you’re being bullied because they are jealous of what you have in her case intelligence and a caring father. High school kids can be so cruel to each other.
This is so powerful and heartfelt! I often see many kids and sometimes their teachers to from preschool to high school - some college kids to - due to the service job I'm in on a daily basis and they're very respectful and focused trying to get to school and get it done. I'm proud very much so of them. But, as I watched this video I realized how much has changed on every level since I was in school! Wow! WOW! Is all I can think! So proud of our young ppls and the principals and teachers today for keeping their heads up and knowing that tomorrow will come and God definitely sees and hears All prayers! Im sick of people always blaming adults. Yes, most occasions are the parents fault, but not all. My parents and brother loved me dearly, they were there with me 24/7 giving me as much love possible but I chose the wrong path MYSELF. Dealing withh drugs, juvenille, school problems and all that bravado. I got bullied so much that I thought that was my only way out but I saw the pain my family had and decided to change before it was too late. And no, it was not small bullying it was all 7 schools of my life, tortured physically, mentally by even teachers at the time, being sexually harassed and things like that, having no friends and all that crap. Please stop saying its all parents fault when it is not, children are just mentally disturbed sometimes and are sick who need help.

I’m so grateful that my school is a lot different that this school. Those kids who don’t get into trouble deserve to be in a different environment i can’t imagine how scary and distracting that must be just to get an education.
