  • The Redcat Wendigo is really a wild beast when you drop in a brushless system for some rock racing style action. But! Is it too much? Ripping around is fun for a while, but a slow crawl challenge on the rocks is a blast too. With hot BL system it’s not exactly a fun crawl, so John has decided to do a little electronics swap. He decided to swap out the electronics for a budget brushed setup and go crawling with this rig. In this video, you’ll see John wheel his Wendigo equipped with a Crawlmaster Sport Motor. He’ll also talk about the rest of the set-up and how it performs on the Holmes Hobbies course. Want to change up the attitude of your Redcat Wendigo? You need to see this!

Just acquired one of these Wendigos. Thanks for posting this. I will be ordering the 13T Crawlmaster Sport once they are back in stock. I am running the 10T Crawlmaster Sport 550 in my Gen8 and my crawling buddies can't believe how well that motor and the 1080 ESC work in a "big ole Redcat" as they call it.

Thanks for clearing up the function of the 1080's freewheeling setting in 3 words better than any other explanation I have found.

Love it! I suggested a 8t to my buddy building one with the same esc, that way he can have a little more wheel speed, that's what I have in all my crawlers. I absolutely love that motor!

I recently ordered a crawlmaster sport 8 turn for my gladiator cuz a 12 turn is a lil too slow..so i take it a 8 turn still has low speed control?

I just recently installed a 550 Crawlmaster Sport 13T in my Axial RR10 bomber of which I 'crawl' 98% of the time. A MASSIVE improvement over the OEM motor. Start-up/low-speed control and torque are hugely improved with the stock 64/12(5.33 to 1) Spur/pinion gearing while giving oodles of available wheel speed (even on 2S). And after an hour+ of constant crawling my finely calibrated index finger analog thermometer repeatedly reports motor temps of about 85 to 95 degrees F*. I wish accessing the motor & gears were easier on the Bomber. I'd like to(more easily) experiment between a 64/11(5.81 to 1) or a 68/12(5.66 to 1) gearing.

Thanks for the budget review, John. For a good, solid brushless combo that does well on the rocks as well as gets up and boogies, I recommend the mamba x combined with Puller Pro Standard 2200kv with a 9-11t pinion. Running on 4s and 5s power keeps the smiles going. Aux wire to switch between crawl and rock race mode is a must with this setup. Upgraded to steel gears in trans and transfer case. The rest of driveline is stock and holding up well. So much fun, this rig!!

No suprise you put a good crawler combo together John it is your business to have proper fun with "scale rc's" I like the Wendigo platform sensored brushless as a U4 rock racer I put a 3300kv Trail master sport with a hobbywing 1080 esc in it same as my Bomber that combo runs great for U4 rock racers I'm changing the Wendigo to a cage with pannels or a Chevy body not a Ford fan cool video 😎👍

I have a Wendigo and I'd like to switch to a brushed setup. I'd like a bit more wheel speed than what he's showing in this video, but I'm only using 2S LIPOs. I don't understand motor turns in this scenario. I thought 13t in a brushed motor was extremely fast. Would an 8t motor in this model on 2S be really sluggish?

Motors seem to be a mystery. One mfg will state specs but they won't translate to another mfg specs. I've been buying motors trying to find the best combo of control while crawling coupled with wheel speed to get up tricky spots. Now I have a bunch of motors that are useless and one that's burnt out lol. I'm at a loss.
