One question I never hear: Why would a committed, practicing homosexual even want to be Catholic? The Anglicans or evangelical Lutherans accept practicing gays. I propose the gays who want to change the Catholic Church don't actually care about the Church. If the Church begins to excuse their behaviour or bless their 'unions', their triumph is simply that they broke down the door. That's all. What happens after is not their concern. Like a castle whose walls are breached. Is what happens to the castle afterward an improvement? No, history shows castles are typically just raided and left to degrade and rot. I would rather love gays by holding fast and inviting them to reject sin, follow Jesus, and carry their cross. And if they can't abide by the truth, there are plenty of other demoninations to join. Why does no one ask this basic question: If they refuse to accept Catholic teaching, why do they 'need' to be Catholic at all? Since there are so many other options, why not just join a church where you can keep sinning and don't have to change?

Thank you very much for this. My exact thoughts too- not just practicing homosexuals but, also women ordinations and so on. Clearly, the two options would be to either, pray for grace, fortitude and humility to follow the Church's teaching or, find another denomination that will affirm your lifestyle.

I think 8:24 in the video answered that question. There are many in the Church who are public sinners and while they may be sinning with full awareness that what they are doing is wrong we do not kick them out of the Church. We do not kick out politicians, thieves and even murderers so I think we can extend the same charity to homosexuals who are struggling. We tell them, as the good father said in the video "not to give up". Saints are sinners who just didn't give up on being Christian

Well said Father, when I was 22 a priest told me, in confession, "life is penance enough". It took me a long while (I am 68) to understand the depths of those words, it is in our brokeness that we come face to face with Jesus, who bore our sorrows and carried our griefs. I think the pope would like the church to be a church of mercy. Imagine if, at the begining of mass we had to stand up, individualy and say, "Hi I'm Jim, I'm a sinner". But that is exactly what we do. Until we see the brokeness of our own lives (poor in spirit) we can't be blessed. Thanks Father Brendan for your encourageming words. God Bless

      @debbieramsey8933 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

That’s not theologically accurate, that just living life is penance. Life as we know it is due to the Original Sin of Adam. For a valid Sacrament of Confession, a real penance must be given by the priest AND completed by the penitent. This ‘living life is your penance’ doesn’t require anything from you-we must all live life. For nearly 1,500 years, no priest ever told a penitent, ‘your penance is to go live life’ they would be not only laughed out of the confessional, but straightened out by their bishops.

However, I was commenting on Fr Brendans talk, at his invitation and I am really only interested in his take on my comments, which I hoped would be positive. All i was trying to say was, "thank God for God's mercy". Yesterday was the feast of St. Faustina the apostle of Mercy. For the sake of clarity, let me add. I had recieved proper penance from the priest and I had asked him about private penance, mortification, he then said: "life is penance enough". My apologies for not being clear.

Would the best way forward be to advise the person(s) to go to Confession where grace abounds, and blessings are imparted? In other words, when a pastor is approached it is an IDEAL OPPORTUNITY to make genuine gestures of understanding and compassion, in private, that point those requesting help in avoiding sin to approach the sacrament of reconciliation. This applies to ANY CATEGORY OF SINNER. So, why was Confession not the focus of the declaration? It would have saved the Church unnecessary confusion, division, and agony.

    Thanks Father,
Great clarity, charity, humility and all delivered with true Priestly understanding and years of experience as a good servant of God!
However, there remain deeply concerning questions of a Priest can bless a same sex union. Surely this is contrary to the Gospel?
Also, how can such decisions be left with individual Priests. Apart from anything else, is this not a recipe for division and confusion?
I believe the deeper and more troubling questions remain unanswered, as there probably is a Catholic answer to them.
Satan thrives on division and ambiguity and that’s my main concern - ie - that Satan is profoundly active in the synodal process and, it seems, is crushing the life out of our instructional church.
Meanwhile, I know the Church - The Body of Christ - can not be defeated and this is what my faith hangs on.
As a Traditional Catholic, I believe the (institutional church is already in schism and has been for many decades. The synod seems determined to deepen the divide and good priests like yourself will soon be forced to make a hugely unenviable decision regarding the future direction you are to follow.
May God bless all of you in this great trial as the ultimate salvation of many souls depend on you.

It seems to me the older I get the more understanding and in some cases more accepting I get. I believe Father hit the nail on its head when he expressed the complexity of the subject of human sexuality. With regard to homsexuality what was once thought of as a character flaw is now understood to be a combination of genetics, hormones and environmental factors, which from my understanding occur in utero. That is to say, the individual does not choose to be homsexual. I understand Father's definition of the term "disorder" when it comes to the purpose of defining the church's view of sexual relationships but know it much more complex than black and white. That said, my observation of human behavior when it comes to human sexuality, you are now entering the realm of physiology and hormones, not to mention the complexity/psychology of human relationships. Add this the change in moral values when it comes to sex and you have an increasing dilemma for the church. Put another way, when it comes to sexual behavior, it's easier said than done. Surely these same influences that have affected society have not skipped over the clergy, with respect to the subjects of homosexuality and pedofilia. As for the Holy Father's attempt to extend the hand of mercy in a blessing and understanding to a gay couple who may have been raised Catholic and are in a committed relationship, I have no problem.

Horrifying to think that up to 50 years ago Irish priests dispensed the same poisonous advice to gay men: “Yerra, I’m sure you can get it up sufficiently to deposit the sacred seed in the vas debitum as God requires. Find a docile woman who will give you a semblance of marriage. Many men like you have done so, and have become happy dads.” The havoc left by these priests in their wake is incalculable. “The church venerates the sexual attraction between one man and one woman, etc., etc.” Repetition, repitition, repetition -the wondrous pedagogic method that is all we need.

It’s the “same old” because Fr Kilcoyne wants it so. He is incapable of learning or listening, so he uses the classical technique of repetition, repetition, repetition, to browbeat those he would “convert.” “I do think we need to talk about this, and I wish we didn’t” - what he means by “talk” is “preach” not “discussing or dialoguing”.

which the Sodomites came to fall into those abominations for which they were destroyed. For pride, gluttony, and idleness are the highroad to all kinds of lust; especially when they are accompanied with a neglect of the works of mercy.”

There is both the teaching of the Old Testament and New Testament with the constant teaching since apostolic times. Pope Francis and fellow bishop of clergy or any Christian must not bless, approve, support any sexual behaviour outside life long marriage open to children. Firstly humans have so many attractions, inclinations, thoughts and passions. These are not sinful as thet are part of the flawed human condition. We have an intellect and will. We see fire which looks bright and shiny yet it is hot, can burn and kill us. We use of reason to avoid being burnt. The same goes for the inclination to steal, cheat, lie, fornication etc. We might feel attracted but we decide no...I won't go near that. That's forms a good habit.

As an Irish Catholic, I’ve witnessed the stress, chaos and dysfunction that often accompanies the households of parents who have far more children than they can reasonably support financially, emotionally, spiritually, etc. If hell is populated by otherwise faithful men and women who decided to have some input/control over the number of children they would conceive, I dare say heaven will be a sparsely populated and perhaps lonely place.

Self control is what you're alluding too. Or the lack thereof. While it may be reasonable to argue that folk back then did not have the insight/means to understand human biology, there is no excuse in more recent times to what you allude to. I mean, folks have greater access to information (all kinds of information) since 1990s compared to earlier times.

I think ultimately we can all accept we are sinners for many various reasons, but is that such a terrible thing if we accept that and try to do better. I’m not apposed to the idea that sex should be reserved where possible to conceiving children. There is an issue with the fact that modern society has deemed sex for pleasure essential to a good partnership. it’s been foisted on us as something we should accept as normal. Although I’m privileged to be a woman that has had my children in this regard. Is it so terrible to accept that we are all sinners and to varying degrees will never live up to all the expectations, but we have avenues that also cancel out those sins such as penance and purgatory, I’m not assuming everyone who broke these rules went straight to hell anyway. Just my thoughts

THERE IS NOTHING PREVENTING A MAN OR A WOMAN WHO ARE ATTRACTED TO THEIR OWN SEX MARRYING SOMEONE OF THE OPPOSITE SEX AND HAVING CHILDREN. Fr Brendan, you are recommending sin. How many women have suffered because of being used in this way as ersatz objects of lust by their confused gay husbands. That a priest should push men and women into such intimate hell in the name of God is truly evil.

The pope's ghostwriters are clear enough. When such Progressivists say "Jesus" they have already transvalued the meaning of Him. The moral teachings of the Scriptures of necessity follow. Let's be awake, not naive. God is not the author of confusion.

    Well said.
    One suggestion: speak of the Transmission-of-Life, rather than reproduction;
nobody sees themselves as a reproduction of anyone.
Reproductions (replicas) are what we buy in the art gallery shop.

I would suggest reading the book “homosexuality and the Catholic Church “ . It does address the elephant in the room which is why some people are SSA. There is good evidence for reasons such as trauma, such as absent fathers , overbearing mothers or sexual abuse .
Also I think we need to return to the theological word of “procreation” rather than the mechanical “reproduction” 😊
    Thanks

I wonder why all the human brokenness from original sin is never mentioned. Prett y much all mental disorders, mental dysfunction, sickness and physical problems of health derive from the effects of original sin. Oh sure, we can do things to ourselves, or things can happen, but original sin is the big thing. I mean we die from it. It is a gigantic effect on the human person and yet they never tell you about it. The will, the intellect, the imagination, the body, all damaged, that includes us right down to the bone. Really, some illumination from a pulpit now and then may go a long way to helping people understand who and why they are. I can say as an American, that even beer brands would sell better if people knew how to behave and dress, and others would keep a job.
It's a Humpty Dumpty creature we are, but for us, the king can put us together again, even if all the king's horses and all the king's men can't. It usually takes a bit of rot in the grave, but all is well that ends well. 😁

Well said, Father! True Love is wanting and revealing Truth for the Good of the other. Worldly pride, sloth, and tepidity among the self-professed members of The Body of Christ have allowed this and all other social/moral ‘issues’ to be turned against God’s Commandments of Moral Love/Law. Many souls are damned because of our weakness and betrayal of Our Lord. God save The Church.

How can you say that the Holy Father left the door open? He wrote a magisterial document in 2019 which completely condemned the blessing of same-sex unions. The document is 100% clear and available publicly for all to see on the Vatican website. It condemns blessing sinful relationships as well as even giving the impression of doing so.

Isnt the Bible a complete manual for humanity for life !! So why doesn't the Pope look to Scripture or the inspired word of God 😮 why hasnt the Pope simply committed the issue of same sex marriage/ Blessings etc then wait for the Holy Spirit to respond 😉 ....

It's not as simple as you make it out to be, father. The Church tells a teenage boy that masturbation is a mortal sin and if you die with a mortal sin on your soul you burn in Hell for all eternity. The only cure for this state of mortal sin is Confession. Most parishes have Confession available for 15 - 30 minutes before the Saturday night Mass. (The parish somehow thinks that this is enough time for 5,000 parishioners.) If you get on line, there's a good chance that an old lady takes up all the time talking about God-knows-what in there. The priest comes out and says, "Sorry, but we're out of time. I have to say Mass. Come back next week." Then, the mortal sinner (Me) has to decide what to do about Communion. He's been told by the Church that the worst sin in the world is receiving Communion in the state of mortal sin. So, now he has to sit during Communion which always causes a big scene. Family member have to crawl over you. Friends laugh at you and say "Sinner!!". Ushers try and usher you in line and don't understand what's happening. Then, for the next week, you carry around anxiety about dying and going to Hell. Getting in a car or a plane is terrifying because there's a chance you could be killed and then sentenced to eternal torture. If you make it to the next week for Confession, there's no guarantee the priest will fit you in for Confession. If you get into the habit of knocking on the rectory door for Confession you make a nuisance of your self. I've had priests say "It's my day off. Confessiosn are Saturday night from 4:30-5:00pm. Come back then." This cycle happened to me for 25 years until I finally quit playing the Church's game.

St Francis of Assisi at his death bed "At that time Jesus Christ would send not a true Pastor but a destroyer who by cunning would cause many to Error and Death " all too evident today, But why would Jesus Christ do that , the reason is to test the Faith, even as revelations state "All that dwell on the earth would be tried "
Even as the Destroyer Pastor wants to bless "Sodomic Unions" corrupting the word ",Blessing" when in truth a "Marriage Blessing " is to be "Fruitful & Multiply" even usung Language Semantics to project Lust as Love
Those who follow his Error fail the test, & those who stand up/oppose the Error amounting to contention for the Faith, pass the test,

Good talk, Father. My problem with this doctrine is that some of my gay friends are do gay they can’t have heterosexual sex at all. My gay college roommate has been in a monogamous relationship for 40 years! Faithful and true. It is very challenging to view this deeply kind and loving relationship as an offense to God. I’m not claiming I know better of course. It just doesn’t quite square.
