- Now that I have the major leaks managed, it's time to really start learning this machine. I give it a good power washing, fix several additional leaks and find more (of course.) I determine several new problems and start working on the "to do" list for this old beast, including filters and basic service. Big machine, big project!

If it weren't for the huge amount of leaking oil, this is what I would have done in the first video of this machine. Cleaning isn't fun, but is necessary. However, you don't want to just start spraying without any thought of what damage it might do. I'm really glad I dealt with the hydraulic breather before washing. Getting all that water in the tank would have been a real problem. Water in the air filters probably wouldn't have hurt anything, but no need to risk it, kind of like the alternator. I also avoided the starter somewhat. Glad I didn't just spray the turbo how it was too. Thanks for watching and I feel very honored to have so much support for me channel! “Look at that thing, I own that” this is exactly how I feel every time I see my boat sitting there on the trailer. From one toy enthusiast to another, totally get it.
For your tanks, there is a water detection paste that you can smear on your stick to measure the amount of water in a tank. I was an assistant manager for several Sinclair gas stations in the past and we checked our tanks for water after every fuel delivery. The paste will change colors when it comes in contact with water. There are 2 different formulations that I am aware of, one for fuel and another for hydraulic fluid.

@@lordjaashin Nah, not really. According to Andrew (not Anthony) there were a few leaves in the center where the fire started, but nothing over the top. The machine was still very young and pretty clean.
John got his lesson during the great boom lift fire of '23.
@@timderks5960 yes really. The moral of the story is clean out all the flammable debris from the engine compartment before you start work EVERY TIME. Also keep an appropriate fire extinguisher readily available.
@@alttabby3633 Again, no, not really. Sure, keeping a machine completely spotless will greatly reduce the risk of a fire. It will also greatly reduce the risk of you getting any work done. Andrew's machine was nowhere near risky-dirty, as far as we could see.

That conveyor belt was a great idea. You should buy a whole bunch and sell it as FarmCraft101 heavy duty machinery mat. Then just use the money to retire, buy big machines, spray wash them and fix the leaks. Rinse and repeat. Easy peasy!
We used to use the big coal conveyor belts to line the beds of coal fired furnaces , to keep scaffold fittings and the like from getting in the ash crushers (they don't like it !). works very well. As for the fibre glass repair, self tap galvanised strapping on to hold it together, cover with plastic metal and paint.

John, you must get rid of the plywood cover... no one wants to see you forced to deploy that excellent fire extinguisher. A fire extinguisher should be seen and not used.

There is fireproofing paint you can apply to wood, it's even required in some applications. Might be asking a lot to get that soak into the already oiled up wood tho, but a new properly treated wood board would not be a fire hazard issue. But i guess if you are already working on replacing it, using a piece of steel might not be a bad idea either 😅

Absolutely right. The numbers under the KHD is the rated part number of the switch you are searching for.

When I was married to a firefighter, we had that size extinguishers in the house and all our vehicles. Once a month he took each one and flipped them upside down, banged on the bottom and shook them. This gives you a better chance of them working when needed. I bet Andrew C. wishes he had cleaned his excavator.
For indoors, i really prefer foam and CO2 extinguishers. If you ever used a powder one, you'll know that the stuff gets EVERYWHERE and is extremely hard to clean. Of course, you need the right class for the type of fire you will be dealing with, but powder is my least favourite option.

the switch off the belt tensioner is a Magirus Deutz part. The symbol you found is the Magirus logo.
Every machine I worked on that had the Deutz had that switch. Rollers, vibra-plates, generators, excavators, etc. That is definitely a Deutz part.

My wife used to comment on the used oil smell from my working on my tractor and implements. It has been some years since I stopped doing that but my hands feel like they have ripped gloves and oil down to my elbows. Thank-you for bringing back the memories. Andrew Camarata was in a big panic when it happened until he realized that it was a lost cause. After the fire was exterminated, he fetched a bigger machine and dragged it from its place. Then bought a complete new excavator and a bunch of fire extinguishers. So he learned his lesson like you did.

That was so hard to watch that monkey in shoes, trying to drag that Hyundai out of the woods with the wheel loader, the chain was all messed up around the track, he was absolutely abusing the loader, out of sheer loss of control and frustration. The damage was already done from the fire. He just needed to relax, come up with a better towing plan, and give it some thought! I felt sorry for him, but he's, 99% clown! Couldn't even get the fire extinguisher to work. Trying to blow the fire out made me laugh😂 then getting shitty with the fire crew. He kept running back to the machine. So dumb. I wouldn't be standing anywhere near it, if the diesel or hydraulic tank got hot enough and exploded it would have been a mess, even the strengthened windows exploding due to the heat, wouldn't have ended well, I understand he was in a panic. But wow. Sometimes, that guy is a clown!

I was so happy when you posted this video and mentioned about Andrew Camarata losing a very nice Ex to a fire due to excessive debris catching fire. Keeping it clean isn't any fun at all, but it is necessary. Great job, Jon! Your methodology for diagnosis and repair is very scientific. Change one thing at a time so you can keep track if something changes. Can't wait for the next video!

Always such a treat. If I ever win a lottery I’m going to send you 20 grand to go buy a used Digger Derrick truck. The guys from Walker farms always claim it’s one of the most useful pieces of equipment they have ever bought. Although having a strong crane and auger on a highly mobile chassis might be more important on a 10000 acre farm in Montana.
I had a truck with holes in the bed. Just before trading it in, I covered the holes with gorilla tape and sprayed bed liner over it to match the rest of the bed. Turned out great!

Very much enjoying this series. Good to see you continuing to promote good fire safety practices, too. A guy I know recently lost his van to a minor accident because his extinguisher had been rolling around the back for years without being checked or mounted somewhere accessible, and what started as a small fire quickly gutted the whole vehicle. Scary how fast it happens.
That farmer repair on the fiberglass does actually look pretty good! If it fails again you could probably epoxy it and use the gorilla tape to hold it in place while it cures, and I'd be amazed if it failed again after that.
Some may question your methods; none should question the results.
Engine temp sensor is screw into one on the head. Will have two. one for the gauge and one for the shut-off if the engine overheat if it's the same thing I had in my underground mine equipment. You're right for the belt switch. at mine they was wire in series with the shut-off solenoid

Here's a fun tip: Turn on the closed captioning when watching the video. When Jon is welding up the air cleaner cover, the captions read "(Applause)" during all of the welding, which is worthy of applause because that cover fit perfectly!

Having watched your videos for years now and seeing you struggle with various stubborn things, I must say, I never felt so bad for you as when you were dealing with those locks. Truly a crap design. Enjoy your vacation Jon, you deserve it!
Had a bad lock once, asked my buddy a locksmith what to do.
He said take a 3/8 drill bit to it until you can move the lock mechanism. Worked great.
@@markbrown6236 I think Jon's issue was with the mechanism that pulls the latch, not with the lock itself. But yes, that's the go-to approach haha.
When you were reefing on that tank bleeder with the vice grips lol I thought omg (stop!!) if it snaps and all the diesel drains!!

That Deutz is an excellent engine. My uncle used to work for a company that built fire engines powered with that motor. They once had to compete with many other builders to sell fire engines to Russia. The deal was to line up all the trucks in the open in siberia overnight ( -30C) and whoever got to start the engine first was the winner. Deutz started after 3 hours of work. All the other were still working on their engines 12 hours later. By the way, the fan belts should have an alarm connected. The logo on the alarm switch is from Magirus - Deutz, where my uncle worked.

Wal-Mart sells fiberglass patches. They are easy to use. However, the gorilla tape might be okay for years as well. Best of luck with it 🙂

I flew overseas for a couple years and we did most of our fueling from barrels we kept around the jungle. We always checked for water in the fuel before fueling from a drum. We would use a water detecting paste on the bottom of our dip stick. It would turn red if even small amounts of water in the fuel.
I thought back to those days watching you check for water. Made me wish I could toss you a tube of paste to check your tank!
YES , THAT much cleaning IS a pain in the a-- , AND a heck-of-a-lot of work...but OH SO satisfying to see the results...even if there are a couple of missed spots. You do fantastic work Jon. 👍❤️👍

My first job when I was 13 back in 86 was working for my old mans construction company. I washed all the dozers, excavators, backhoes etc etc etc. It was the worst job lol. He had me going into the bowels and depths of all the machines to clean them out. I feel your pain John lol
I guess that was because you were small and could fit in all the tight spaces easier than an adult. That sucks but I hope you were paid well for that dirty job.
A tip I do when pressure washing to keep the dirt from splattering around and sticking back on the machine is to rinse occasionally with the garden hose. The high volume of water carries the loose dirt away better. Then I go back to the pressure washer to knock some more grim loose. I call it the deluge rinse.

Hi John, Man I enjoy seeing how you go after things. I am a retired diesel mechanic and can relate to your fix's. I especially like that somehow you manage to get the camera to the spot with the light required to show all of us just what you are doing. Did you see Camarata's latest video where he burned his newest excavator to the ground? I'm guessing Farmcraft101 will put fire extinguishers in his machines if he sees that episode.
He did, he also had a fire which luckily didn't escalate as Andrew"s. But since then, he always has well maintained fire extinguishers on his equipment. Later in the video he even mentions Andrew's video. =)

Its pretty enjoyable to see how much your video making skills are growing. Storytelling, editing, vantage points, ect.
A couple examples: your drone shot from your last video showing how the corral is being used with your new repairs, and in this video the editing of the ending to-do list with music selection and transitioning, and foreshadowing haha.
