As I reached the end of the ad (and the ad in part I), I thought wow! I didn't skip the ad. Next time I need a mattress, I'll know to go to part 2 of the gear cutting tool tool video.
There was a kid some years ago on youtube, like you, he made hes own lathe from some wood and an old drill. Some of the creators noticed it and gifted him a real lathe. There are safe ways you can start right now kid.
see if your highschool has a careers path! mine had one called the CTE program and i got to work in a machine shop like his for the second half of my school day for my junior and senior year! it was super fun and amazing to learn! best of luck to ya!
Good luck!!! Best job I've ever had and was never out of work!!! Can't beat the old days of manual machining with a dro. But learn some programming skills for cnc. Titans of CNC have a site dedicated to learning and it's all free. Highly recommend you check that out.

Man your relationship with your wife is inspiring. I love how much you both appreciate each other. So awesome. Thanks for another episode of perfection!
25:10 - That reaction is adorable.... You're a lucky man to have a woman like that. When I show my Mrs stuff I made she just says "I don't understand any of this".... 😩😂
I have to agree with her. That pen and paper trick on the lathe was impressive. I kept going back and watching it over and over. You could literally set up a second YT channel with just that thing in the lathe and I'd set here with it on all day as background noise while working.
The "organic tool holder" and "we don't do woodworking" joke is top tier subtle craftsman quality and it's one of the many reasons I love your channel.
I love the honest enthusiasm of your wife what a wonderful feeling it must be that she supports you and genuinely finds it cool that you show it to her.
Don't you love it when your significant other gets something so completely from your own nerdy world? Most of the time, I get eye rolls or looks of boredom, but on those rare occasions, when they see it too, it's SO fun!
A machine shop is a holy place; where the machines that make the machines that make everything else are born and raised. Its just supernatural and an awe inspiring place for any observant person. Channeling big horsepower and big iron into quality, the precision, the maths, the perfection, the fit, the beauty, the enduring.
But you have to follow the shop rules!!!!! You can wind yourself into hamburger or pull your scalp off if you make the wrong mistake or disrespect the machinery!
I will have you know that I have taken to referring to any loose, bird's nest-y, metal wiring/swarf as "Murder spaghetti" based off of one joke you made in a previous episode, with a particularly swarfy cut on the lathe. It has also inspired me to make an art piece based on that. A bowl of swarf with a fork in it called "Machinist's Pasta".
Nominal means this number is bullsh*t, yes, yes it does. Also your wife is an absolute treasure. So nice to see her share in your enthusiasm for your work. Lucky man you are.
Haha the thrill in the voice of your Head Engineer was probably the best part of this!… save for the anticipation of the infinite numbers of videos for us that this video now forces you to make! Can’t wait. Awesome as always, sir!
When you chucked it up and started the lathe, I thought, "wow, that's seriously cool." Then when I saw the pattern the pen was making I thought, "no way!" What an awesome build!
The pen drawing on the cutter blank paper was one of the most satisfying things you've done so far! Up there with the perfect "pop" sound of the shaft that fit perfectly in the hole that one time.
Well, if nothing else, you have made a beautiful L.P.S.....(Iathe Powered Spirograph). I played with a spirograph as a kid, you made it machinist friendly (I'll admit the original toy made far more elegant designs but then they couldn't produce gear cutters) Beautiful outcome, and glad to see a SIDE PROJECT!
That demonstration with the pen and paper caused everything to fall into place. Such a simple little thing that then immediately clarifies the entirety of the last two videos. But the journey of getting there was even more enjoyable for not fully understanding it.
I am in awe when a chunky piece of metal, metal which in and of itself is a miracle of human ingenuity, is turned into a useful tool, using astoundingly complex and precise machines, just wow. Well done!
It's always so satisfying seeing the progression of 50's-60's design -> IM paper drawing -> blank metal stock -> box of shame -> random metal parts -> box of shame -> assembly -> box of shame -> completed assembly -> happy Chief Engineer. It's a winning channel formula if I ever did see one. Looking forward to the next video of this series!
So what I'm understanding is that you want a different thread, so instead of buying that threaded piece you make it on the lathe, and instead of buying the gears to connect to the lead screw you're going to make your own, and instead of buying the cutters to make those gears you're making your own cutters, and instead of buying a gear cutter form tool you're making your own tool to make one to form gear cutters to cut gears to go onna lathe to thread a part. In the music industry this is called goat farming
The double clicky spinny thingy was cool enough by itself. But the demo with the disc and pen at the end really did make my day and point out just how it will be used. And as usual a super nice job on all the machining.
I often skip through ad content, but even your ads are golden! Example, at 5:15; "They ask you questions about your physical" "parameters" 😂 This was another great video and I loved the demonstration at the end that showed us how it worked with pen/paper. My brain couldn't understand this tool until that point. So cool!
The "boring" joke is still good as long as the carbide insert is still sharp....... otherwise, it would be a bit dull 😁 Watching that tool making the "cutter" (aka card and a pen) was super satisfying to watch!!! I can't wait to see the next step of making the cutters! 😊👍👍👍👍👍👍
I have absolutely no use for one of these clicky things but I still want one. Your wife's reaction is adorable. It's always a great feeling when you show your significant other something you've made and they are as excited about it as you are.
As somebody who despises the setup in videoing how-to projects, I also really appreciate the effort you put into it for the viewers. It's cool to see the head engineer excited about it too. Maybe isles the co-production / co-editing, but my head engineer doesn't get it! Keep up the good work and again, really appreciate the effort. Most don't know how much harder it is to multi-task, machining and video production.
Just amazing! Your video, workmanship, humor, and your wife are not nominal, precisely excellent. Thank you. I have sold my 15 x 60 lathe to a young friend who is hoping to get out of his engineering job to begin a creative business. He is teaching himself making custom horns. The videos helped inspired him to become a machinist, creator and a special talented person. I’m proud to pass on my lathe which I love. I hope the new one replaces it will be as cool as I hope.
Well Madame Inheritance Machining already told it to you so i'm out of the competition but, *I'M SO IMPRESSED by your work* !!!! Thank you for that moment :)
I'll say the same thing I said when Scott started joining Cam on Blacktail Studios - I love your stuff when it's you solo but keep the head engineer in these videos, it's a very welcome addition.
Were you a watchmaker in a previous life, the artistry shown in making these engineering tools is sublime. My very best to your lovely Wife and thank you once again for a most entertaining video.
I'm a doctor and don't know the first thing about machining. But I love watching masters of their craft, especially those that go out of their way to detail their rationale/approach. I come for the incredible ambition and attention to detail, I stay for the swoop-swoop/chonk-chonk talk I can understand. Been watching a lot of you, Farmcraft101, and Watch Wes Work. Dream collab in the making, you're all incredible explainers of not only the project but the process. Keep up the great work!
I know next to nothing about metal work, except for what I've seen online. But I find your channel both entertaining and informative. I say entertaining first because the information you give is usually outside my wheelhouse, but you keep it entertaining at the same time. That being said, I do love the interactions you have with your "head engineer." Yall are really cute together.
As a maker ...All my dimesions are Nominal... Fantastic job , its looking great... also I love how enthusiastic and playfully sarcastic the "head engineer" is .. 14/10 content
Man, I am subscribed to a couple dozen maker channels, and yours is absolutely my favorite. Most satisfying videography, most excellent craftsmanship, funny, and let’s be real - got the best radio voice in the business. I am always happy to see a new post from your channel. Keep kicking ass man. Love your content 🤙
It's funny that as time goes on, there are less and less side projects. 2 years ago, it was like 5 or 6 side projects per video. Now it's 1 or 2. Goes to show that "side projects" really are worth it!
Your wife's reactions and your interactions with her may be my favorite part of all of this. I mean I love everything in the videos. But I want to extra express my appreciation for this new addition. Also love to see you excited to show her.
I actually have more respect for you whenever I hear you and your wife interacting. Reminds me of my wife and I, and how we support each other's interests
Last week I had a "Thats enough machining for the week" moment. I was drilling a deep 3/16 hole in aluminum in the lathe. I wasn't clearing chips or applying cutting oil often enough and basically welded the drill inside the hole.
You know you've made a sucessfull channel, when people that have no experience what so ever in machining, gets exited every time they see a new video drop. And you sir, yours does that to me. I would buy that tool and just use as basically a fidget spinner.
Your wife is a keeper. Hearing her excitement for your interests and supporting you down the journey of your interests is probably one of the most important things a relationship can have in my opinion. Just make sure to return the interest and you will have a long successful relationship ahead of you. Keep up the fantastic work and thanks for sharing.
This is a thing of beauty. I really had no idea that these existed and it's really satisfying just to see it move. We get so complacent using CNC vs the old way of doing things that we forget the art and thought that used to go into making something manually.
I'm an extremely amateur machinist that also received a past generations lathe and vertical milling machine and I've been waiting for this video from you! Thanks for all you do!
I've been a machinist for 35 years now. I've been lucky enough to make some pretty cool thinks. Im ordering this book and I'm going to make my own, I highly doubt I'll ever use it for it's intended purpose, but it's pretty cool.
Man that button insert is a lovely thing to watch cut. And when you're running diameters off center, what I like to call "them big jobs", you're bound to goof once or more. I call this phenomena "machine gremlins."😂😂😂 That torsion spring was crazy work dude. And I literally laughed out loud when you spoke real machinist right after. "This number is bullshit, make it work" is the first phrase you learn when you graduate from FNG to actual machinist. I'm just as impressed as the lead engineer with the middling demonstration and cannot fuckin wait to see the next video!
Do you remember when you had a favorite show and only one episode each week was released? Being excited for the next week and the next episode? I am really excited to see this gear cutter come together and your next episodes. I am not even a machinist, I can't understand many of the things on the fly, but it is put together so nicely. Btw, the demonstration with the paper at the end was amazing. Keep on going!
You are responsibly very clever ,and your wife is very cool with her input ..... Hooray . The tracing at the end from something you built was fantastic ,give youself a pat on the back .... Now bring on the gears 😊😊
Such a cool contraption! I'm glad we have smart people like engineers and machinists to create such useful things that are complicated, but beautiful all the same!
I never interact on TH-cam. However, I couldn't stop myself from scrolling down and saying at least something. I am always impressed with what you make (being a wood guy) but this project, I was thoroughly impressed. Not only do you explain your ideas and process, you make it fun and satisfying to watch. The live demo at the end made everything click for me and my jaw dropped. Well done, I look forward to all of your videos.
When I was in college at Purdue, many decades ago, we had the yearly Rube Goldberg contest. The goal was to take a simple task and perform it with as many steps as possible, more steps the better. Is this what we are watching?????? BTW, it is insanely beautiful!

That being said, I do love the interactions you have with your "head engineer." Yall are really cute together.
this is the exact same amount of energy and understanding my wife puts into my machine shop projects :P
It's coming together! Always a pleasure watching you n The Wife chatting back n forth.
Greetings from Hopkinsville, KY.
It's funny that as time goes on, there are less and less side projects. 2 years ago, it was like 5 or 6 side projects per video. Now it's 1 or 2. Goes to show that "side projects" really are worth it!
Very cool, seeing this apparatus get to work for the first time. The paper disc shows the working principle so clearly.
Awesome follow up and I really smiled from the inside hearing your cheerleader’s reaction to the pattern on the paper “blank”
Really is great therapy
I said "wow, that's amazing!" like 7 times this video. Now I'll say "Wow, YOURE amazing!" Thank you for sharing all your shop adventures with us. :)
I've been a machinist for 35 years now. I've been lucky enough to make some pretty cool thinks. Im ordering this book and I'm going to make my own, I highly doubt I'll ever use it for it's intended purpose, but it's pretty cool.
I absolutely love the “wife” sessions of the video. It truly makes me look forward to these videos. The insight, the excitement. Keep doing this!
Good to see you're still letting the spindle come to a complete stop before reversing the tap back out 😉
Man that button insert is a lovely thing to watch cut. And when you're running diameters off center, what I like to call "them big jobs", you're bound to goof once or more. I call this phenomena "machine gremlins."😂😂😂
That torsion spring was crazy work dude.
I'm not at all jealous of how excited your wife got for the end product. Absolutely amazing work. This channel makes me so happy. Thank you.
You are responsibly very clever ,and your wife is very cool with her input ..... Hooray . The tracing at the end from something you built was fantastic ,give youself a pat on the back .... Now bring on the gears 😊😊
I am but a lowly crane inspector but this.. this contraption right here butters my biscuit. Amazing work as always.
I was so confused for so long, until that final minute. Then it was pure satisfaction
When I was in college at Purdue, many decades ago, we had the yearly Rube Goldberg contest. The goal was to take a simple task and perform it with as many steps as possible, more steps the better. Is this what we are watching?????? BTW, it is insanely beautiful!
Do you have any idea how absolutely awesome this video is? Oh, yeah, and there's some incredible metal working craftsmanship occurring as well!
I don't usually comment on sponsors, but I've had a Helix mattress for about 5 years now, I definitely recommend it. It's really nice, I think you'll enjoy it.
The generous measurement with the calipers explaining how they take your measurements for the mattress was on point.
My Dad was a machinist for ship repair companies. He really would have enjoyed watching your channel.
This is probably the coolest thing I'll see today. Thanks Brandon 👍 🇬🇧
