If you are in that area, Dorking to Dorking Deepdene is another good pointless journey. They are almost, but not quite, two levels of the same station.
seconding this, dorking to dorking deepdene via dorking west is very much doable if entirely unnecessary
Thus is a brilliant idea since this is also another local pointLess journey
3:25 They do that at Leeds and York for the Harrogate Line, where the trains are advertised for Poppleton on the Leeds end and Burley Park on the York end, so that people go for the faster trains via Church Fenton for York
Indeed! I think there was unused footage from this video somewhere where I mention this. But yes!
That’s the line I get to school and work about three or four times a week so seeing two comments mentioning it was a bit of a surprise
@@NickBadleyit was birthday 5days ago
I turned 13
Can u do Point to point
Go from Chesterfield to Chesterfield
And try and do so many trains for it
Time limit 3H at most
They used to do it at Reading for stopping services to Paddington - they were advertised for Ealing Broadway. Since the Elizabeth Line started they don't need to use subterfuge any more, as the new service goes all the way to Abbey Wood.
If you'd known about the delay at Ascot soon enough, you could've got the Aldershot service to Ash Vale and then walked the half-mile to North Camp to get a GWR service to Farnborough North.
Ah! Smart thinking!
@@NickBadley I know of 2 pointless journey I am aware of . The first one is a 8th of a mile from Newcastle central mainline station to manners station in Newcastle upon Tyne. The second one is from Guildford station to London road station Guildford as you can literally walk the same distance about and just miss the train from Guildford by 30 seconds to London road if you walk it.
@@geocachingwombleThe two stations aren’t pointless in Guildford, however people who travel from one of them to the other makes it pointless because you may as well just walk down the high street 😂
even better you could have went to Aldershot then went to ash to get to a train to Farnborough north there
@@Southern999Responses exactly my point. I used to be to walk it quicker to get off at London road and get back to godalming quicker when I lived there via the canal towpaths than I could getting the train from London road to godalming. When I was in 6th form.
If you are going to Leatherhead it's always quicker and cheaper to buy your tickets on the train after getting on at Guildford London road than it used to be getting to Guildford as the London road trains used to be more frequent in the late 2000's/early 2010's
Virginia Water is certainly a very posh place. I recommend alighting there and taking a nice hike through the Great Park up to Windsor. It's a great day out.
@@176MarkW nearby Egham (the next stop up the line towards Waterloo) is also very posh. In the 1990s it was home to Britain's only official Ferrari dealership.
In 1983 I moved to Farnborough and my lodgings were located half way between the two stations so I used both stations frequently and brings back many happy memories
Can confirm.... it is really cool when mr badley goes to all your local train stations
Virginia Water - good choice! Between Chertsey and VW the rail line crosses both the M25 and M3.
Incidentally, with your comment on the train from Weybridge being indicated as 'terminating' at Barnes, in the 'down' direction the announcement at Waterloo is that the train 'terminates' at Addlestone.
The 'stand' of 9-10 minutes at VW has always puzzled me. It didn't used to be like that. I can only assume that it is related to the timetabling effect of these trains being routed round the 'Hounslow Loop' which didn't used to happen.
It waits at VW to allow the half-hourly faster train from Reading to Waterloo to go ahead (using the Twickenham/Richmond line after Feltham) - otherwise the Weybridge train (which also stops at Ashford and Whitton) would hold that one up before diverting onto the Hounslow Loop. Never understood why they don't just leave Weybridge a few minutes later - probably because it has to avoid some clash with the busy Waterloo mainline before heading off towards Chertsey.
If I have read the timetable correctly, leaving Weybridge a few minutes later is not an option as the 'next' down train arrives at Weybridge only 5 minutes after the up train leaves. It must be the effect or routing round the 'Hounslow Loop.' Years ago, it used to be that the 'slow' train from Weybridge was around 6 minutes after the 'fast' train from Reading at VW.
Plus, I think SW Trains have managed to cause some overcrowding by 'squeezing in' a Waterloo to Waterloo service, in both directions, using the 'Hounslow Loop' joining/leaving the main line at Whitton.
Has it been that long since the last pointless journey? I knew there was something missing in my life.... Well done Nick.
Similar to that train being advertsied as going to Barnes, I was in Leeds and York earlier this week, and there's a train between the two that's advertised as going to Poppleton in one direction and Burley Park in the other. It confused me because I'd bought advance tickets on that service because it was cheaper than the quicker, more direct routes.
I assume this would be the Harrogate line?
@@JeSuisRene Yes. A certain someone can't accept that some people aren't actually in a rush to get from (x) to (y) as soon as possible.
@@KwangoTron years ago there was one train a day that went from Leeds to Sheffield via Huddersfield and stopped at all stations. It was advertised at Leeds as a service to Dodworth, as there were faster trains to Barnsley and all points beyond.
There was even a short period where it ran beyond Sheffield to Lincoln- advertising a Lincoln service at Leeds that went that way round would have probably annoyed a few unsuspecting travellers!
Yes.
I bought a ticket, via one of the many apps, from York to Leeds, on the service marked for Burley Park.
I was sold a ticket for a service that, theoretically, does not run.
No wonder folk get bemused by the ticketing arrangements in GB.
There are so many ways of doing a pointless journey between Farnborough Main and Farnborough North (via Basingstoke and Reading is another).
Also Frimley station on the Ascot to Aldershot line is a few minutes walk from Farnborough North but on a completely different line
The walk from Ash Vale to North Camp (on the two lines in question) is often included in itineraries to avoid having to go the long way round. Not ideal if you're not good on your feet though!
Farnbrough Main to Farnbrough North by train takes 1 hour and 14mins changing at both Woking and Guildford and costs £14.10
Walking is just 17 mins and is free.
I know which way I would go….
brilliant video & i def agree the 450s & 444s are great as i ride those a lot everytime i use SWR & Surrey has a lot of posh places round there & nice to see that Farnborough North is getting a footbridge
Hi Nick. I work for NR in Basingstoke and enjoy your videos. Hope you have a good time here... looking forward to more "local" content!
Ah nice!
Great to have this series return. I enjoyed watching Nick.
What Nick couldn’t see was all the smiles and silent cheers when the music started playing 😂
The 444/450 Desiros are so, so good, some of my favourite EMUs. Plenty of childhood memories from when I'd visit my grandmother in Liss with my family and we'd take the train down to Pompey.
Whitchurch to Whitchurch via Whitchurch is now in your grasp.
The fact that Nick loves the Desireos is really awsome, my local train
Fabulous, I have lots of childhood memories of trains to Guildford from Farnborough Nth, it looks quite different now though! My grandmother lived a short walk across The Hatches in Frimley Green.
When I worked on the railway in the 80s, that was my area for about 3 years.
Really great video! Appreciate the effort on the more detailed map, crucial for this area with many lines!
Love how I'm seeing this like 2 days after moving to Farnborough
Windsor and Eton Riverside to Windsor and Eton central next?
th-cam.com/video/LWoiZHGTmDE/w-d-xo.html
NGL as a current resident of Guildford I totally agree with you at 2:15, those plus the evening out fare so I can get into London cheaply and comfortably in ~35 mins on a weekday evening makes South Western to be my favourite operator atm (certainly compared to GWR round here, good God almighty it's grim)
As someone who lives just outside of Guildford and is in Guildford frequently doing my hobby I totally agree with you.
Very good video.
Great Western Railway has had staff shortages lately, leading to cancellations.
Another journey worth doing is London Road (Guildford) to London Road (Brighton). 0:00
Hi! Paisley Gilmour St to Paisley Canal St would be a brilliant pointless journey.
The Canal St line has a nice bit of history behind it for your viewers
Point to point idea: Mill Hill (Blackburn) to Mill Hill (London) via Mills Hill (Greater Manchester)
The Mill Hill station in London is called Mill Hill Broadway. There's also Mill Hill East on the northern line so Nick can include that if he likes.
As a Farnborough local, I've been waiting for this video for about 2 years 😂
Word of advice, Ascot is pronounced "Ass Cot", not "Azcut"
Love Pointless Journies. Please do more. I lived in Basingstoke in the 90's. I expect it has changed a bit since.
So the Southeastern Mainline. There is a extremely small distance between Folkestone West & Folkestone Central. The distance is so close you can see people boarding or waiting on the platform for one station from the other.
Newark Northgate to Newark Castle? Very easy to do as a Pointless Journey
2:45 My local station lol
The last time I went to Farnbrough north the footbridge wasn’t there, so it’s nice to see it coming along great
Poor you Basingstoke!
I didn’t know that Farnborough had 2 stations near to each other. Funny enough I never been to Farnborough before.
Literally listing all the places the Martians destroyed in War Of The Worlds :D
(Lots of railway stuff in the book)
On Sundays the Ascot to Aldershot extends to Guildford
Awesome Nick, been waiting for this one
Congrats on 25k+ !!! 🎉
Ascot is posh. It even has a McClaren dealership next to the entrance. Up the road is home to Royal Ascot
Brilliant video Nick, I've never been down to this part of the network. Desiros are quite good but not the 350/2's because of the 3+2 seating lol.
Is this new lust for a ride on a 458 going to end up like the 230 saga on the Borderlands?
You could do a Weybridge to Weymouth as a Point-to-Point, if those names are close enough.
Farmborough is one of my local stations
3:05, your right. Much faster trains leave from the same station to waterloo so It's advertised as Barnes to show it's not direct
When you left Farnborough North I saw you as you ran back up the hill to Farnborough Main, I live overlooking Farnborough North and next time your here visit the community garden.
I like the blue SWR railway trains. Real comfortable. Least fav is Thameslink
The bridge you captured before Virginia Water took you over the M3. The line passes over the M25 a few moments before on a longer bridge, which is caused by the angle the line crosses the motorway at 🙂
Had to get the Gatwick train once, its a long walk to North Camp when it doesn't stop at Farnborough North.
Having got off at Ascot and seeing the Aldershot train, I'd have been tempted to do Ascot-Aldershot-Ash-Farnborough North instead. The only thing better than a pointless journey is an even MORE pointless one and it's always good to tick-off a three-letter station!
Fangirling! Nick doing stations I know well eeeek
I have a Pointless Journey for you. Bicester Village to Bicester North.
Try a train from Dorking Main to Horsham to Redhill to Dorking Deepdean to save yourself a 5 min walk.
EVEN MORE POINTLESS….
Unless you have a wheelchair as Deepdean is not step free
Glad there back a suggestion I have is farringdon Thameslink to Elizabeth line
Woo, my local stations!
You should include the cost too. Also you could do catford to catford bridge
Suggestions: Southend Central-Southend Victoria.
i did this just over a year ago a truely great journey main-brookwood-ashvale(short walk to northcamp the connection is recognised by the operator)-farnborough north
Not surprised at _all_ that the train to Farnborough North you were scheduled to get got cancelled. Don't take my rumor-spreading at face value, but from what I can tell, GWR physically does not have enough rolling stock assigned to the line to run a full weekday serviceand it's the slower trains of each pair that usually get axed as a result.
Were so back
Need to do Pontefract.
LOVE THE VIDS NICK
A few years ago the 455's were not too bad as they were heavily refubished since first introduced with awful seats but never liked the dated 508 trailer in the 455/7. This 508 trailer variant stayed as a consequence of Merseyrail not wanting the 4th trailer car.
Going a bit off topic, the two coach 150 sprinters that look like 455 carriages, never understood why sprinters were not made with more carriages but guess it was cost.
Pointless journey suggestion is Horsley to Effingham junction or other way round
i love your videos nick, can you do Earlsfield (London) to Earlsfield (Aberdeenshire)
it is properly weird seeing nick on the route I commute on xD
4:49 definitely not the M5
I'm going to be thinking about the alternate name for Virginia Waters all day now. God damn it
You should do monument (tyne and wear) to monument (tube)
It's definitely not the M5 or the M23 haha
4:50 either the m5 which is somewhere between exeter and Birmingham doesn’t pass through chertsey and m23 also doesn’t pass through chertsey between crawly and redhill
Hi Nick, really enjoyed the video, if you are down south how about Dorking to Dorking Deepdene or Edenbridge to Edenbridge Town?
Seeing 'no views' on one of nick's videos is wuite rare to me
The North Downs is always busy.
I went to Farnborough north the other day!
Virginia Water is incredibly posh. I think they have a train station for the staff at the houses. Plenty of private gated communities there backing onto golf courses and the like. It’s all new money from the entertainment industry and people who want to live near Ant and Dec.
I am persuading my partner that we both need the Pointless Journey tops, he’s relented that I can have one
I would like to see another pointless journey from Heath high Level to Heath Low Level
I LOVE POINTLESS JOURNEYS! :D WASTING MONEY AND….. Just generally nothing else
4:45 its the M3 Motorway
When you said you weren't taking the obvious route I thought you'd be taking the OSI from AHV - NCM after changing at ACT
That's my local station lol
He finally done my local pointless stations I’ve done this journey before
Why not try Farnborough to Salisbury, Salisbury to Westbury, Westbury to Reading, Reading to Farnborough North?
The Class 150, 156, 317, 318, 319, 320, 321, 322, 455 and 456 are all somewhat the same train but with different layouts and cabs as they were all built by BREL (I think but feel free to correct me if i'm wrong), who based them all off the steel mk3 bodyframe.
An alternative route would have been Farnborough Main - Basingstoke - Reading - Farnborough North
Idea for a pointless journey Romsey to Salisbury via Romsey using the service through Southampton
I feel the ultimate pointless journey would be Southend Victoria To Southend Central To Southend East then to end of Southend Pier on the pier train...
@Nick Badley - Try Dorking Deepdene to Dorking Main :)
Farnbrough Main to Farnbrough North by train takes 1 hour and 14mins changing at both Woking and Guildford and costs £14.10
Walking is just 17 mins and is free.
I know which way I would go….
not a very long one but coulsdon town to coulsdon south
If I remember the 455's don't have toilets either, whereas 150's and the Desiro's do
The 455s also operates much smaller journies, much more similar to Merseyrail
@@mattevans4377 similar to the Class 323's, which were built for commuter traffic (hence the quick acceleration and deceleration they have) - however they had toilets from new. Surprisingly they did do the Birmingham-Liverpool run in the late 1990's - I bet that was fun with the motors screaming at their top speed of 90MPH!
@andyt2510 For a moment I thought you meant the 455s, lol
Yay, a new vid
03:15 The reason why the departure board says Barnes is purely because SWR don’t want Waterloo passengers going the long way round via Staines and want them to go via the Surbiton Line
YOOOOO U CAME TO FARNBOROUGH! :D
3:39 😂😂😂
Heres another journey…..
Get a train from Dorking Main to Horsham to Redhill to Dorking Deepdean to save yourself a 5 min walk.
POINTLESS…. Unless you have a wheelchair as Deepdean is not step free
Can your next Pointless Journey go from Dorking to Dorking Deepdene via Clapham Junction and Guildford.
When you get time do Cambridge to Cambridge north
i live in camberley and having to connect to guildford or farnbrough to get to places and no direct trains or buses unless you wanna sit on the 34 bus for a hour and half. is annoying. only on weekends strangely it connects to guildford one journey.
According to old maps, Farnborough station is in North Farnborough, and Farnborough North station is in Farnborough Street.
2:42 Did they get rid of the Celia Drummond announcements?
