    Steve Martin is a gifted musician and was part of the Laurel Canyon crown back in the late 60's/ early 70's. He used to open for the musical acts at the Troubadour. A comedic genius! 🙂

    Steve Martin was the very first standup comedian to play a stadium. He turbocharged the standup comic and comedy club movement, and has god status among comics.
    I read a lot of books by and about comics. Steve Martin's biography and life lessons book, "Born Standing Up", is VERY good, especially with him reading it to you in audio book format.

    i remeber the last time i took a bath. It was the time I used my wife's Nair hair remover to mow a neglected lawn. I followed directions and had the tub filled up about a quarter of the way so i can rinse off this wierd spatula thing. I applied it and waited the proper amount of time and began to sculpt. I would shake that spatula scarper thing in the tub water often. The whole whole scraping process took about 20 minutes. No matter I got it done...smooth as glass. So I drained the tub and took a shower shower to clean all the other bits. When I was drying off with a towel I saw patches of leg hair missing. Random patches of hair and I guess I got a chemical burn cause my legs...I looked like I had some type of cancer with leprosy. I thought ok it will grow back i will just wear jeans. thats what my wife does when she dont shave her legs. It was almost a month before I felt stubble again. I was like shit, eventually my wife is gonna wonder why I have been wearing flannel PJs to bed in the middle of August. Never took a bath since. ever go to the gym and see guys with red splotches on their legs....thats way...they wont admit it but thats why. I cant be the only one who screwed up using their wife's products.

    The advice given by his father referred to a very common saying (at the time), "you don't know sh*t from Shineola" to indicate someone who was clueless. Shineola was a shoe-shining polish and nice shiny shoes was an indication of money, while poor farmers had dirty shoes from walking in sh*t on the farm. A "Jerk" means "a dumb silly foolish person" ... in this movie. I'm not sure if the definition of the word evolved over time, but that's what they were going for here.

  • @Daniel-Strain
    @Daniel-Strain ปีที่แล้ว +22

    Something a lot of people don't realize... The definition of the word "jerk" changed for some reason, between the 1970s and the 1980s. Today, most people think of a jerk as an 'a-hole' or a very mean, rude, or inconsiderate person. But in the 70s and before, the word 'jerk' used to mean an 'idiot' or a buffoon. Once you know this, you'll notice them using it that way in a lot of old shows and movies before the 80s.

    The cross eyed guy suing Martin was the film's director Carl Reiner, who early in his career was in a comedy duo with Mel Brooks. Then he created one of the biggest early TV shows, The Dick Van Dyke Show, and directed a number of Steve Martin movies. After playing Archie Bunker's son in law in All In The Family, his son Rob Reiner went on to direct many famous movies himself. Back in the day, there was an old family television show by the name of Lassie. It was about a family who lived on a farm back in the mid 1950's and their adventures. The shows main character was a smart, protective Collie dog named Lassie. As a dog would normally do, Lassie would bark, and they would interpret what Information Lassie was trying to tell them... just like Steve Martin's character did in that scene. I'm sure they were trying to get a laugh off of that Lassie reference.😂😊

We went out to Blockbuster one night to pick some movies to watch at the cabin; my mom saw this one and got really excited, she loved Steve Martin and said we needed to watch it, she swore it was the funniest movie she'd ever seen. I was concerned about the R rating but she said it was rated R in a very different time and a lot has changed since then. It definitely still felt a bit weird to watch with my parents at times, but was still very funny and memorable. I think more than anything I just appreciated how much my parents enjoyed the movie and the specific jokes, which we all quoted for a long time. All in all it's just tied to a very positive memory and happy moment in my life, and I was not expecting it to show up here. Can't wait to watch along with you!!

    My parents took me to see this movie in the theater when it came out. I was like 7 years old then, and it's still a movie I love whenever I see it. I still remember the commercial trailer for the movie. Navin (which is a Southern black way of saying "Nathan", so that was supposed to be his actual name) was on those steps where the movie started in his robe with his Thermos. He looks at the camera and states, "I'm not a bum. I'm a JERK!", and the trailer gives a little synopsis of the film. The cat juggling scene, and the scene where he keeps signing checks and drunkenly snarling, "One dollar, and nine CENTS!" followed by taking little knickknacks from the house were my favorite scenes.
    Fun fact: The cat juggling scene came from his stand-up comedy where he did a bit about cat juggling as a new, disgraceful practice that was emerging. His stand-up was funny as hell, so when you get a chance, check him out! As you might have guessed, his comedy style is also very visual, and he uses a lot of props. He also does funny comedy songs that he wrote, and he plays a mean banjo!
    *Edit* Oh! I'm also a visual artist (and musician as well), and I won first place in a Disney drawing contest for drawing Steve Martin with an arrow through his head when I was in 5th grade. The arrow-through-the-head was one of his stand-up comedy props.
