One of the first conversations my husband and I had when we met was about this movie. We started dating in October and I gave him a striped thermos for Christmas. And I got a waterproof vinyl sticker for it that says “I’m picking out a thermos for you.” He still uses it, 17 years later. 😂

Something a lot of people don't realize... The definition of the word "jerk" changed for some reason, between the 1970s and the 1980s. Today, most people think of a jerk as an 'a-hole' or a very mean, rude, or inconsiderate person. But in the 70s and before, the word 'jerk' used to mean an 'idiot' or a buffoon. Once you know this, you'll notice them using it that way in a lot of old shows and movies before the 80s.
@@MrParkerman6 Just that the name of the movie is intending to communicate something like "the doofus" and not "the mean person" as we might read it today.
Steve Martin owned the 80's: The Man With Two Brains, Roxanne, The Lonely Guy, Parenthood, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and All Of Me are well worth a watch.
Guys, I complain about a lot of the choices on this channel but CONGRATS on being the first channel to ever react to this classic as far as I know! This movie isn’t life changing but it’s hilarious nonetheless! I thoroughly enjoyed watching the highlights again with you. I haven’t seen this in years! Yaaaaaaaas!!! She is so wonderful. "Broadway Baby", "Being Alive", "No One is Alone", "Pearl's A Singer", "Cupid" , "Hills of Shiloh/Faithless Love" are just a few of the songs she sings to perfection. I hope they will add her to their Female Friday's list. Great suggestion!
No wayyyy! I can't believe yall reacted to this! This movie is very special to me, our family went on a skiing vacation in Vermont when I was maybe 10 or 11. We went out to Blockbuster one night to pick some movies to watch at the cabin; my mom saw this one and got really excited, she loved Steve Martin and said we needed to watch it, she swore it was the funniest movie she'd ever seen. I was concerned about the R rating but she said it was rated R in a very different time and a lot has changed since then. It definitely still felt a bit weird to watch with my parents at times, but was still very funny and memorable. I think more than anything I just appreciated how much my parents enjoyed the movie and the specific jokes, which we all quoted for a long time. All in all it's just tied to a very positive memory and happy moment in my life, and I was not expecting it to show up here. Can't wait to watch along with you!!
I love Steve Martin. So many of his movies fall under the feel good category. Some of my favourites: * The Big Year (2011) - is one that just makes me feel really good. Love it. * Father of the Bride 1 & 2 - still amuse me after several re-watches * House sitter (1992) - so funny * My Blue Heaven (1990) - hilarious * Dirty Rotten Scoundrels - Also really funny Some of his serious roles are just phenomenal but my go to are usually his comedic roles
After seeing this movie, every year when the new phone books arrived we would yell "The phone books are here! The phone books are here!" Love this movie!
Love Bernadette Peters!! Always had a crush on her. She actually has a very strong voice and does a lot of Broadway (nominated for 7 Tony awards and won 2) and she is currently doing a singing tour, so, yes they were singing softly at the beach but she can belt it out on stage.
I can't imagine that you haven't reacted to Bernadette Peters over on your music channel! She's a fantastic singer and actress. She is a critically acclaimed Broadway performer, having received seven nominations for Tony Awards, winning two (plus an honorary award). Four of the Broadway cast albums on which she has starred have won Grammy Awards.
She’s one of the 20th Century’s best Broadway performers. There’s an older recorded production of Into the Woods in which she SLAYED IT as the witch! I’ve been a fan of both Peters & Martin ever since I saw the Jerk when I was little.
If you enjoyed this movie with both Steve Martin and Bernadette Peters, you'll want to watch, "Pennies From Heaven" which was made two years after "The Jerk". Fun fact: Bernadette Peters actually plays the trumpet. She asked Director Carl Reiner to let her play the trumpet in the beach scene, but he said no. She does use the correct fingerings and licks her lips right before placing the trumpet to her lips like someone who knows how to play the trumpet would.
Bernadette Peters is a Broadway musical mainstay. She was in the original Braodway cast of Into the Woods, among others. Her singing voice is phenomenal!
Steve’s first job was at Disneyland. He was always fascinated with the magician who worked at the magic shop on Main Street and he loved when he used to be stationed there
My Louisianna-born dad used the phrase, "He doesn't know shit from Shinola" a thousand times when I was young. When I watched this movie in the theatre in New Jersey, I started laughing aloud - all by myself.
My dad used to say this all the time also!! And yes people needed to know what Shinola was. Even people who have heard the saying, most don't know what Shinola was.
Steve Martin is in a good movie to add to your list of rom-coms. He starred with Lily Tomlin in the film "All of Me". With those 2 as the stars you can probably figure out that it leans more toward comedy than romance, but it's also sweet and leaves you smiling at the end.
Love this movie. Bernadette Peters was very big on the stage - such a great voice. Loved watching this great movie again with you two. Also loving those new chairs - look so comfy.
hahahaha Steve Martin has done so many great comedies. My all time favorite is "All of Me" with Lillian Tomlin, so funny. Also, he was on Saturday Night Live for a few years with his comic partner Martin Short, and he has also done stand up. He is an all around talented guy!
Housesitter with Steve and Goldie Hawn is another good one. I can't wait for you both to watch Death Becomes Her (Goldie, Meryl Streep, Bruce Willis)! It's one of my fave movies ever!
I remember laughing so hard when I saw this in the theater. I love Steve Martin and a few of my favorites of his are Housesitter with Goldie Hawn, Roxanne with Daryl Hannah, and All of Me with with Lily Tomlin.
Martin is one of the great comedians and comedic actors in history and he's also an accomplished banjo player. You absolutely positively must react to his Roxanne. You will love it!
I have loved Steve Martin ever since I first saw him. I saw him in a big country wide stand-up tour. He is amazing. The crossed-eyed man that launches the lawsuit against him is Carl Reiner, who also directed the film. Reiner had a legendary career. He created the classic Dick Van Dyke show, he did countless appearances on classic comedies. He's also the father of Rob Reiner, who played Meathead on All In The Family and has directed many classic films.
What I love about Only Murders, is how cross generational it is. I grew up with Steve Martin and Martin Short movies. So I'm too old to really know anything of Selena Gomez's work. But was absolutely stunned to see her hold her own. And because of the show, you have her fans being introduced, to two comedy legends.
I tried, and I binged the series, but it didn’t touch me/speak to me/evoke any emotions. Perhaps that’s because I never “got” Marin Short (I can’t stand “Three Amigos”). Roxanne is brilliant, though.
Haven't seen this flick in awhile. Love that line about "spontaneous advertising that could lead to something" by having his name in the phone book. And of course the defective cans of oil! Will be checking this out in a bit! Steve is also the star in a great comedy movie "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid", which is so clever, intertwining scenes from old film noir movies with Steve's character.
Steve Martin is a gifted musician and was part of the Laurel Canyon crown back in the late 60's/ early 70's. He used to open for the musical acts at the Troubadour. A comedic genius! 🙂
Prior to this movie, Steve Martin was doing his famous comedy skits, "King Tut" and "Wild Crazy Guy" on comedy circuit. After this movie, Martin has a long career in movies that continues today. He is currently doing a series on one of streaming services. Besides acting, Martin is also a musician playing mainly banjo. Martin 1st played banjo during his younger years mainly at Knott's Berry Farm in LA.
This movie came out when I was ten years old and I was already a huge Steve Martin fan. I'll never forget that I cried uncontrollably near the end when he was walking around going "I don't need anything! Except this remote control, this ash tray, etc. etc." I was like "STEVE'S LOST EVERYTHING!!!!" (SOB!) LOLZ!
To this day I still break out in “I’m picking out a thermos for you”. I loved this movie. Still watch it every time I see it when scrolling the channels.
I know it was a comedy, but the scene when he got all the gifts from.his family was really touching to see how much he was be loved by his "adopted" family.
The first time I saw this movie it was my youngest brothers birthday and this was his choice. The best part of this movie was watching my mother’s reactions as she was a product of a very religious conservative community.
I was fanatical about Steve Martin when I was 10 and 11. My dad took me to see this in the theater and I was laughing so hard I practically needed an oxygen mask. His other best silly comedy from his early film days is "The Man With Two Brains". Would love to see a reaction to that one.
The director, Carl Reiner’s son, Rob directed Misery, The Princess Bride, This Is Spïnal Tap, Stand By Me, When Harry Met Sally, A Few Good Men among others. ALL of which y’all should check out over time.
My parents took me to see this movie in the theater when it came out. I was like 7 years old then, and it's still a movie I love whenever I see it. I still remember the commercial trailer for the movie. Navin (which is a Southern black way of saying "Nathan", so that was supposed to be his actual name) was on those steps where the movie started in his robe with his Thermos. He looks at the camera and states, "I'm not a bum. I'm a JERK!", and the trailer gives a little synopsis of the film. The cat juggling scene, and the scene where he keeps signing checks and drunkenly snarling, "One dollar, and nine CENTS!" followed by taking little knickknacks from the house were my favorite scenes. Fun fact: The cat juggling scene came from his stand-up comedy where he did a bit about cat juggling as a new, disgraceful practice that was emerging. His stand-up was funny as hell, so when you get a chance, check him out! As you might have guessed, his comedy style is also very visual, and he uses a lot of props. He also does funny comedy songs that he wrote, and he plays a mean banjo! *Edit* Oh! I'm also a visual artist (and musician as well), and I won first place in a Disney drawing contest for drawing Steve Martin with an arrow through his head when I was in 5th grade. The arrow-through-the-head was one of his stand-up comedy props.
Steve Martin is an amazing musician; especially on the banjo but Bernadette Peters is a musical theatre legend. She definitely held back vocally on her singing in this movie. Be sure to check her out.
“The Man With Two Brains” is my favorite Steve Martin movie.❤. The scene with the dogs when he jumps out of the bathtub….just kills me. My Mom and I used to sing “I’m picking out a thermos for you, not an ordinary thermos for you!…” in the middle of wherever…the silliness never ends. 😊
My sister and I still buy each other thermoses. I can still sing the song. We sing the beach song together. The movie has always been our litmus test on whether we would continue to date a guy. If he loved it, he had a chance. 😅 Addit: I love your pick. It’s one of his best.
Steve Martin dated Bernadette Peters (his girlfriend after the biker) for a number of years. One of her early movie roles was in the original (and by far best) version of The Longest Yard, which you definitely need to react to. It's a 1974 comedy with plenty of football action for Jay.
OK, Jay. We're all relying on you. You MUST start singing "I'm picking out a thermos for you" to Amber. The more random the timing, the better. The look on her face will make it totally worthwhile.
I think the word Jerk used to be more flexible than it is today in its use. It used to also be applied to habitual screw-ups and time-wasrers as well as people that are just belligerently abrasive or intentionally a-holelish.
Bernadette Peters has always been a favorite of mine and wish she would have done more in the movies. She comes from Broadway, as Singer Dancer. She did another movie with Clint Eastwood "Pink Cadillac" Also a funny nice movie. Steve Martin, well awesome as always.
One of the best documentaries ever made. LOL. This is such a hilarious movie. It seems that many don't know about it. But the ones who have seen it, love it. Thanks for a great channel and reaction! GO LONGHORNS!! lol
When I was a little kid, my Dad’s best friend (who we called “Uncle Ed”) would always drop movie quotes into any situation and get a laugh. One of his favorites, was to say “I was born a poor black child…” anytime anyone wanted any sympathy. For instance, “Mom, what’s for dinner?” Mom says “Chicken and rice.” (Kid rolls eyes and whines “I want pizza!”) Uncle Ed: “I was born a poor black child!”
@@chucksmash1 It was such a blessing to grow up with him around. The really funny thing about him saying “I was born a poor black child” is that he’s white. He’s a character. He’s also a Vietnam Vet and reminds me a little bit of Uncle Si from Duck Dynasty because of the way he always told such tall tales. He’s like that guy from the movie Big Fish. His stories were the best.
Yessssss!!!! The FUNNIEST damn movie EVER!!! I have this one on DVD. “You mean I’m gonna stay this color!” 😂😂😂😂😂😂 And, when he finds his rhythm. I think this was Steve Martin's first movie. It's a little rough around the edges, but sweet. For you two, I can HIGHLY recommend you see "Parenthood" that he did a few years later. Directed by Ron Howard.
Did you forget about Planes, Trains, and Automobiles? You loved him in that. Steve Martin is great. Check out Parenthood, My Blue Heaven, Housesitter, or the Three Amigos next.

You guys will enjoy watching both, especially "Parenthood".
“Roxanne” is better. Then I would say “The Man With Two Brains” “Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid,” “All of Me,” “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels,” and maybe “Planes, Trains, and Automobiles” (not in any particular order).
"I was born a poor black child." I can not say this out loud without laughing.

"You mean I'm going to stay this color?" That reverberated around the culture in the day: school cafeteria, water cooler at work, picnics.
This movie is a classic. From a bygone time where comedy and humor were not offensive. Everyone laughed ! Oh how I miss it!
People were offended back then also. Every generation has a group that protests something. Look up "The Hays Code".

Marie is played by Bernadette Peters. She is well known for her singing and performances on Broadway. She would be a great pick for female Friday.
She has been awarded two Tony's, a Golden Globe (and additional nominations) and several nominations for each Grammys and Emmys. Oozes talent.
Agreed! Bernadette is a Broadway LEGEND, you guys should absolutely react to her on your music channel!
She was gorgeous AF.

Thank you for watching this. I gave up asking people to react to it. My second favorite comedy behind blazing saddles.
I love Steve Martin.
So many of his movies fall under the feel good category.
Some of my favourites:
* The Big Year (2011) - is one that just makes me feel really good. Love it.
* Father of the Bride 1 & 2 - still amuse me after several re-watches
* House sitter (1992) - so funny
* My Blue Heaven (1990) - hilarious
* Dirty Rotten Scoundrels - Also really funny
Some of his serious roles are just phenomenal but my go to are usually his comedic roles
After seeing this movie, every year when the new phone books arrived we would yell "The phone books are here! The phone books are here!" Love this movie!
“Thing are going to start happening TO ME now!
I miss getting Phonebooks for that reason alone lol
@dalegee9495
BE SOMEBODY!!!! 😁 ☔
Love Bernadette Peters!! Always had a crush on her. She actually has a very strong voice and does a lot of Broadway (nominated for 7 Tony awards and won 2) and she is currently doing a singing tour, so, yes they were singing softly at the beach but she can belt it out on stage.
The Jerk, Three Amigos, Bow Finger, Planes trains and automobiles, and Parenthood are all Steve Martin movies I can watch over and over again.
Dirty rotten scoundrels ftw
And Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is another movie
Can't forget "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid."
Planes and Trains is a million times better than his movie.
Roxanne❤
absolutely one of my favorite movies!!! "YOU MEAN IM GONNA STAY THIS COLOR?"..
I love her in the movie Annie. (With Carol Burnette and Tim Curry)
She's pretty special. Have you seen her in Into the Woods?
My Mama LOVED this movie! Bernadette Peters (Marie) is a VERY famous Broadway actress.
Wrong, dumbass.
She said it was her playing in the film.
I love Pennies from Heaven! Also has Christopher Walken dancing!
"Remember phone books?". Lol. I never thought I would hear that phrase in my life time.
One of the best opening lines ever.
Bernadette Peters is a Broadway musical mainstay. She was in the original Braodway cast of Into the Woods, among others. Her singing voice is phenomenal!
I'm old enough and saw this when it came out in the theater. Everyone loved this movie! "I was born a poor black child" still makes me laugh!
Steve’s first job was at Disneyland. He was always fascinated with the magician who worked at the magic shop on Main Street and he loved when he used to be stationed there
Lonely Guy is a very underrated one of Steve's. Highly recommend! Doesn't get its credit.
My Louisianna-born dad used the phrase, "He doesn't know shit from Shinola" a thousand times when I was young. When I watched this movie in the theatre in New Jersey, I started laughing aloud - all by myself.
Yep! And Shinola was a shoe polish for those who have not heard of it.
My dad used to say this all the time also!! And yes people needed to know what Shinola was. Even people who have heard the saying, most don't know what Shinola was.
I know the expression from Stephen King books
Planes, Trains, and Automobiles is absolutely hilarious. You need to check it out. It also stars John Candy.
They have. They did it around Thanksgiving last year.
The term “jerk” used to mean something like “sucker”.
You two should listen to Steve Martin’s “Let’s Get Small” stand up routine. He’s a legend!
You would both love Steve Martin in Roxanne, such an awesome movie. His latest Only Murders in the Building is brilliant.
@@DANTE83100 I completely agree, it really is a great show
@@SuziQ. each to their own. Taste is a personal preference. I wasn't a big fan of Roxanne as a child. But I appreciate it more now as an adult.
Steve is an amazing actor with great depth and range.
They could react to King Tut over on their music channel :)
I remember seeing him play banjo on "Midnight Special". I also had an album of him playing "Dueling Banjos" at the end. That blew me away.
I wish his film career was still going. He hasn't done any substantial film work in over a decade other than a couple bit parts a few years ago.
You guys should check out Turner and Hooch, the original with Tom Hanks ❤ such a riot… love to see you enjoy as always!
Great reaction. Great Steve Martin movie is "All Of Me". Lilly Tomlin also stars with him in All Of Me..
I agree, but will add “Roxanne”.
Me too. I was 12. Laughed so hard....my DAD threatened not to take me to see any more movies.
You definitely should watch "All of Me" with Steve and Lily Tomlin!
Steve Martin is comedy genius. From stand up to SNL and the silver screen. And a great banjo player.
The director, Carl Reiner’s son, Rob directed Misery, The Princess Bride, This Is Spïnal Tap, Stand By Me, When Harry Met Sally, A Few Good Men among others. ALL of which y’all should check out over time.
He's also the guy that gives Navin a ride all the way to the end of the fence.
Rob Reiner was also 'Meathead' on the long running sitcom 'All In The Family'....
He also is very outspoken about political issues-which makes some movies he did pretty funny.
Carl Reiner actually had a cameo appearance in this movie as himself
@@karlsmith2570 Carl Reiner was also a long-time writing partner with Mel Brooks.
Man.... my parents used to watch this all the time on cable when I was like 6 years old in the 80s. I didn't get any of the jokes. Now I get them. 😄
Addit: I love your pick. It’s one of his best.
The man with two brains was my first experience with Steve Martin. Childhood favourite.
The sobriety-check scene is awesome.
Steve Martin can pick a banjo like nobody's business.
He's got rhythm alright, you should hear him play "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" . LOLOL
Steve Martin dated Bernadette Peters (his girlfriend after the biker) for a number of years. One of her early movie roles was in the original (and by far best) version of The Longest Yard, which you definitely need to react to. It's a 1974 comedy with plenty of football action for Jay.
So many of the older movies get lost on younger people-they take everything so literally and personally, which you can’t with these types of movies.
Make sure you watch the original "The Longest Yard" from the early 1970's, not the remake.
OK, Jay. We're all relying on you. You MUST start singing "I'm picking out a thermos for you" to Amber. The more random the timing, the better. The look on her face will make it totally worthwhile.
I think the word Jerk used to be more flexible than it is today in its use. It used to also be applied to habitual screw-ups and time-wasrers as well as people that are just belligerently abrasive or intentionally a-holelish.
...and in the 50s it was someone who ran a Soda fountain.
Bernadette Peters has always been a favorite of mine and wish she would have done more in the movies. She comes from Broadway, as Singer Dancer. She did another movie with Clint Eastwood "Pink Cadillac" Also a funny nice movie. Steve Martin, well awesome as always.
The word "jerk" back then had another meaning as well. It meant an idiot. 🙂
Lol! Thanks. I needed that reminder that people used to be humans and could laugh at themselves. Peace, Love!!
When this movie came out I had just a few years earlier figured out what my special purpose was for. Loved this movie and still do.
This movie is GOLD 🥇
Sadly in today's world it would be cancelled......smh
One of the best documentaries ever made. LOL. This is such a hilarious movie. It seems that many don't know about it. But the ones who have seen it, love it. Thanks for a great channel and reaction! GO LONGHORNS!! lol
When I was a little kid, my Dad’s best friend (who we called “Uncle Ed”) would always drop movie quotes into any situation and get a laugh. One of his favorites, was to say “I was born a poor black child…” anytime anyone wanted any sympathy.
For instance, “Mom, what’s for dinner?” Mom says “Chicken and rice.” (Kid rolls eyes and whines “I want pizza!”)
Uncle Ed: “I was born a poor black child!”
That's HILARIOUS..! Uncle Ed sounds like an awesome funny dude..😂😂😂
Or when he leaves, and hours later he’s still by the fence just chilling. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 Soo many great parts. Steve Martin is a nut. In the best possible way. This is one of my mothers favorite movies, so I saw it for the first time when I was really young. It came out the year I was born. CLASSIC!!
Marie was played by Bernadette Peters, she does have a sweet little voice, but she can belt out a tune like you've never heard, she's been on Broadway her whole life.😊
And she happens to be the most beautiful creature I've ever seen in my life.
Mabel King, who plays his mom, also played the Wicked witch of the west in the movie The Wiz. She also played the mom on the show What's Happening.
Steve Martin is also excellent in "Father of the Bride" and it's sequel...
I love Steve Martin. My favorites are 'A Simple Twist Of Fate', 'Dirty Rotten Scandals', and 'Father of the Bride 1 & 2'.
💗Y'all should react to Steve Martin in 'Father of the Bride' 1991 and the 1995 sequel! Both movies are so funny and sweet!
I worked on this movie… I had a great time. The family was terrific.. Mabel King I had seen on Broadway and she was just wonderful 🎭 I got to hang out with Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee.. I have funny stories from that film. It was one of my favorite jobs…
I required my kids to watch 3 movies. Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Blazing Saddles, and the Jerk. The three greatest movies ever made!
Life of Brian is a much better Python movie and Blazing Saddles is terrible ( saw it in the theater) But, the Jerk is a great S. Martin movie...Not his best but great nonetheless...So; change those selections K?: Space Balls or Young Frankenstein are Mel's best but. They really shouldn't be included in the "greatest movies" genre... Ten Better movies

I think this was Steve Martin's first movie. It's a little rough around the edges, but sweet. For you two, I can HIGHLY recommend you see "Parenthood" that he did a few years later. Directed by Ron Howard.
Every parent should watch 'Parenthood'. It's a perfect representation of what it's like to have kids at different ages. 🙂

Who gives a shit about Directors?
They are WAY Overrated.
Screenwriting is WAY more important.
@@MrParkerman6 I would venture to say probably a lot more people than give a shit about your opinion.
One of the best Steve Martin movies is All of Me it is insanely hilarious
Did you forget about Planes, Trains, and Automobiles? You loved him in that. Steve Martin is great. Check out Parenthood, My Blue Heaven, Housesitter, or the Three Amigos next.
That Trick was used in American Graffiti if you recall since you saw the movie. It works a lot better in American Graffiti with the cop car
“WHATS WITH THESE CANS?!!”
He hates cans!
Please don't forget about "Back To The Future 3" 😊😊 Two other classic 80's Steve Martin movies to watch are "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" with Michael Caine and "Parenthood" also starring Rick Moranis (they both starred in "Little Shop Of Horrors") and a young Keanu Reeves. You guys will enjoy watching both, especially "Parenthood".
Yep, agree with your comment on all counts! Those are the essential Steve Martin movies for me. 💯
*"I Love You To Death"*
1990 Comedy
Tracy Ulman, Kevin Kline, River Phoenix, Keanu Reeves, William Hurt, Joan Plowright.
It's a funny one.
Father of the Bride always gets overlooked but that was a huge hit.
You'd have to think "Parenthood" would hit home with these reactors.
“Roxanne” is better. Then I would say “The Man With Two Brains” “Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid,” “All of Me,” “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels,” and maybe “Planes, Trains, and Automobiles” (not in any particular order).
