In this ultimate review of Farpoint / Fairview backpacks I will tell you all the pros and cons of each pack. I’ll also reveal which Farpoint I think is best! We'll take a closer look at the new features of the Farpoint and Fairview backpacks that were first released in 2022, comparing the organizational features on the inside, the comfort level of the harness, and how each pack works together with different daypacks, including the Osprey Farpoint Daypack (that's included in the Farpoint 55)

Tbh I would probably get the 40 and then get my own day pack to add on if I felt like I wanted more space. The design of the 50 confuses me a bit, I don't see why they changed a couple of tiny things and then it's exactly the same bag plus a day pack. Why not just offer it as a 40+ 10.

Thanks for the review. It's certainly an improvement, but it's a pity there are no additional zipped/organiser compartments for smaller items, like the one inside the bag, lengthwise.

Traveling through China in 2012 I had a cheap 2 in 1 where you could strap the daypack to your front. It was really helpful. When a train is literally so packed your backpack is being crushed having your laptop in the front where you can protect it is important. Also when traveling through more risky areas like Cambodia it’s good to keep your valuables up front and clothing in the backpack.
I ended up going for the 55 as I found it for the same price as the 40 and didn't want to go out and buy a daypack. Also for people with expensive laptops the compartment in the 40 wasn't all that protective and takes up space in the main compartment. The laptop compartment is in the main one with a shorter sleeve separting them. This means you need to be careful to not have items that can stain your laptop. The 55 has more space for clothes and I can keep my tech items in the daypack separately.

Excellent video. Confirmed my purchase decision off the 40 but with the regular Daylight (15l instead of your 20l Plus). I don't think i would attach it to the back but curious as to why you did use the fabric loops when doing so?

Good review, looking getting the 40, all ready own daylite plus 20lt using hole lot together is good.
Only problem might have is when buying surverniess where to store them, on way back home.
I thought about it and I'm going to ship the souvenirs that don't fit. I refuse to check luggage.

Thanks. I was a bit confused because I watched their video about the Farpoint 55 trek and it didn't include a daypack, but then was watching review videos on YT where it did. "Trek" and "new version/edition" are the key words :) I think I need more space than the 40, but maybe not if I include the daypack, which I know I'll want. So now I'm wondering if the 55 Trek plus a daypack is going to be too much.

Has anyone noticed that inside the very bottom, where the harness cover goes is quite large, and there is some sort of O-ring attachment point under there? I’m wondering if it could be used as a hidden pocket of sorts or another place to stash stuff?
Thanks for this comparison video! I spent a lot of time researching packs and landed on the Fairview 40. I got the Farpoint Daypack separate to add, but I'm not a fan of the water pouches or the opening. I might send it back and get the Daylite Plus instead. Was glad that was included in this review.
I got the daylite plus not long ago. Used it for an overnight for a wedding I attended and it was just right.

@@leilakikuchi-house6750 hey! thanks for asking. I did end up getting the daylite plus, but I wouldn't say it clips easily into the Fairview 40. It's possible to snake the clips of the daylite through some loops on the fairvew, but it wasn't the most secure. And with the amount I was packing into both bags (moving overseas as opposed to hiking), it ended up balancing oddly. I also needed stuff out of the daylite frequently, so in the end I just wore it on my front. But I do use the daylite daily as a backpack. I'm glad I bought it.
This was great. I have the olde version of the Fairview 40 and really hate the computer in the front, it puts too much weight on my shoulders, hearing about this new version makes me want to up grade, thank you!

Hey thanks for the vid! Got a question for you about the daypacks. One of the things I like about the Farpoint daypack is that it's small enough to be considered a "personal item" for flights. Do you think that would consistently be the case with the Daylight+? Or is it big enough that it would have to be a carry on? Thanks
You're welcome! I'm confident it'll go as a personal item without problems. (Unless there's some kind of airline with crazy restrictions I don't know about)

The older model of the 55 was a lot bulkier than the 40 so now that changed and both 55 and 40 are the same .. thanks for your video.

Was leaning towards the 55 but you certainly nailed the pros and cons of each solution. Can you comfortably wear the Daylite Plus in turtle shell mode with the FP40? Also, I feel it's a downside to end up with 2 laptop compartments (one in the 40 and another in the Daylite), as you loose some packing space in the main bag. I personally always carry my laptop in my daypack when transiting from A to B so it'll stay with me when boarding a bus, train or plane.
I find turtle shell is comfortable enough for 30 min or something... just enough for getting to your terminal / bus /etc. It's true that the two packs have some feature overlap. I think what tilted me to the 40 is that I can also use it standalone more easily, otherwise the 55 has advantages for sure
@@indietraveller Definitely a trade off. It leaves to wonder if Osprey will release other daypacks that will be compatible with the Farpoint's shoulder strap clips!
My wish is that they make the laptop company removable in the 40. I never carry a laptop.
@@indietraveller How can you attach the Daylite Plus to the front of the FP40 for turtleshell carry? I heard it doesnt have the buckles that would connect to the farpoint shoulderstraps.
@@kilbeam99 Yeah it doesn't have the right buckles. So instead of attaching you'd wear both sets of straps over your shoulders

Thanks for the video, I've waiting for this review for a few weeks. I have a couple of questions. are the clips of the old farpoint 55 daypack compatible with the new farpoint 40?? and what are the dimensions of the new farpoint daypack laptop space?? I have a macbook pro 14 inch and I don't know if it will fit in it. I have an older farpoint 55 and I try to figure out to buy a new one o just buy the farpoint 40 and keep the old daypack, Thanks!!
Great questions! I don't have an answer to your first one as I don't have my old FP55 anymore, so I don't know. As for question 2 I just put my Macbook Air 13" in the FP55 daypack laptop sleeve and there is about 3cm or 1.2 inch of space to spare. Macbook Air is 11.97 inches wide, MacBook pro 14" is 12.31 inch wide (according to google) so yes I'd say it will fit just fine :) Hope this helps!
if Farpoint is really full the attachment of the daylite still doable?

I’m glad I came across this video, I thought I was going crazy seeing different models of the same bag. You mentioned your camera cube didn’t fit into the daylite bag, and then proceeded to show your peak design packing cubes. Any chance that camera cube was also from peak design, and if so which size (s/m/l) didn’t fit into it? Does the cube fit into the daylite plus by chance? I need to pickup a bag that can accommodate some camera gear so your video has already been super helpful. Thank you!
Hah yeah that must have be confusing! Glad to clear it up. The camera cube is by Tropicfeel and not necessarily one I recommend, I just had it laying around from another review. I think they do just one size so you could check the dimensions. I shoot micro four thirds which means the lenses are smaller than typical, but it was still too much to have a camera with 3 lenses. The daylite sadly isn't very wide at the bottom

what camera cube you recomend?
I chose farpoint 40 + farpoint daypack. Farpoint daypack has biggest laptop compartment compared to daylight, lightest weight and the most simple, best integration into the bigger Farpoints. Farpoint 40 is as you said much better as a standalone with it's extras compared to 55. This solution is more expensive but feels more complete for me where a laptop is part of my life and I appreciate more places to stash items for easy access.
Hi thank you very much, I've been on the hunt for a Farpoint 40 and your advice on the day pack has me intrigued. I have a "standard" maybe 20-25L backpack I use to carry my laptop to and from work, would the Daylite Plus fulfil that requirement? If so, makes that purchase more valuable than just for travelling. Conversely, how do you feel about using a Farpoint 40 as a day pack if it isn't filled to the brim, eg. Farpoint 40 + Suitcase, and Farpoint 40 is 1/3-1/2 full most of the time until the end of the trip for additional souvenirs, thinking of that approach for a 2 week trip.
I've actually been using the Daylite lately at home as a day-to-day backpack for my laptop and a few other things. It's fine for that purpose (but not perfect, it's not quite made for this).
The FP40 would definitely feel too big for me as a daypack, even if not fully loaded. The back panel has a stiff frame around it so it will feel full-size (at least vertically) even when not packed. You could still do it of course, but personally I'd feel it would be a bit odd and too large.Just my 2 ct :)
@@indietraveller Thanks for the reply! I watched the entire video again. I've tried on a Farpoint 40 w/ a 8kg weight, and it felt fine, was adjusted, so I bought that - very happy, the laptop sleeve and larger mesh vs. the 55 I prefer I think. When it came to daypacks the shop assistant mentioned the daylite plus, there are zips exposed so if your bigger pack is on you and some pick pocket had the opportunity while it's there, those exposed pockets/zips are potentially unusable if you're concerned, and that steered me to the farpoint day pack. Lastly, I feel I'll use the combo for maybe a few hours at a time at most, basically between cities I guess, the day pack for longer (3-4 hour stints) but with far less in it. I will miss the drink pouches and the ribbed back, wish me luck and thanks again, great video.
How much wieght do the plastic clips connecting the daypack to the main backpack support? I have a hard time imagining I would be confident letting my laptop hang in front of me if those two clips are the only things supporting it.
Hi. If it still helps, I have the older Fairview 55 (the one with a zipper to attach it + the buckles) and I never used it with the Daypack attached for this reason. It just weighs the backpack down too much, as your tech and water (which it's usually the heaviest) will be in the daypack, to the point you don't even feel the loadlifters anymore. I imagine that now, with only buckles, it will drag the backpack down even more. I spent 2 years in Asia and loved the main pack but the "attachment" system, never worked for me.

I noticed your version of the 40 has lockable zippers for the laptop sleeve. The new one at REI has 1 zipper and a fabric loop at the top. Have you seen this and do you know if there were other changes? Seems like a design flaw.

I totally understand what you're saying with the various situations in which you may find yourself and what you feel like doing in those contexts because I think the same way. Anyway, what is the length of the non-flexible part of the back of the Trek 55? I'm still wondering if I could use it as a carry on even if it's not officially carry on compliant.
Just measured it just for you ;) The hard part is 64cm tall, so I guess that's about 9 cm over the usual limit.
@@indietraveller Thanks! That's not as bad as I thought, but still a little bit too risky to use it on a regular basis as a carry on. I don't understand how Osprey can make dozens of all kinds of packs that is becoming almost hard to tell the difference between their functionalities. but never thought of making a 45-47 liter Farpoint Trek. One that would not be carry-on compliant officially, but with which you'd have no problem using it as a carry on on most airlines and which would have all the advantages of the Trek version for longer walks and heavier loads. They seem to be either super particular about being carry on compliant, to the extent that the bag becomes too small or weirdly shaped, or they just completely give up on the idea of carry on and create these extremely long backpacks. Girls are luckier since the Fairview Trek 50 is almost perfect, but even for an average height male, it doesn't fit at all - I tried one once and the hip belt was almost on my chest. Anyway, thanks for these videos and enjoy your travels!

@@annndddrre the Fairview Trek 50 is a bit shorter than the Trek 55. Still too big for carry on but a bit closer to the size you're after. If possible, try it on in a store and compare it. It's the female version of the bag but is almost similar to all other ways. I'm unsure what the length of the hard inflexible part of the bag is and if that is the same length for both bag types but it might be worth investigating more. Below are both bag total dimensions according to the stores that sell them.
Fairview Trek 50: 62H x 38W X 32D cm
Farpoint Trek 55: 72H x 39W x 31D cm
@@DanielGimenez Thanks.. I had actually tried the Fairview thinking exactly along the lines of your message. But unfortunately, the Fairview is really tailored for women, meaning that it's meant for short torsos. And even though I'm not a tall guy (5'9''), as soon as I put the Fairview on my back, I realized it's nowhere near acceptable. It was for a way way shorter torso than mine.
I just bought the farpoint 55 old version and 2022 version to see which one is better and the newer version weighs so much more. I think more than a pound more than the previous version. What are your thoughts on this. When travelling weight is important, it makes no sense, why they would make a heavier product
Yeah that's annoying. I chose the 40 i may end up getting buyers remorse but at least i don't have to stress about weight as much

Do you think the trek 55 is too much for 6 months is south east Asia?, I bought the Farpoint 40 and just don’t think I’ll be able to fit everything in or meet the weight limit for carry on, even using compression cubes!
First carefully assess what you're packing... I have some tips here www.indietraveller.co/how-to-pack-light/ I did 9 months in SEA with a FP40+daypack. If you still think it'll be too small, then move to a FP55 :)

According to Osprey Europe website the new Farpoint 40 and Farpoint 55 have exactly the same size (?): 55x35x23cm
from my understanding, the Farpoint 55 is essentially a 40 Liter pack with a 15 liter daypack on top of it.
If the Farpoint 40 has effectively the same volume as the Farpoint 55 minus its (useless) daypack, I'd rather buy the 40 as it comes with an integrated laptop sleeve and combine that with a better daypack like the Daylite Plus.

Not really. It takes up only a little bit of space if you're not using it
How will you compare the 40 to the Cotopaxi Allpa42?
Both good packs, different pros & cons imo. FP40 light and simple, fantastic harness. Allpa OK harness, bit heavier, but amazing internal organization
I was considering farpoint 40 vs farpoint 55 and decided on the 55 because the main bakcpack has more space for clothes. That was one reason and the other the daypack incorporated with the 55 is perfect when i just need to explore a city and i would never buy a 15l backpack. The initial idea was to give it to my gf but after using it i changed my mind. Shockingly it can hold a fair amount of stuff too. The opening was weird for a couple of tries but i got used to it very fast. I choose the 55 because the 40 is not suitable for a expensive laptop and for that i have a couple of everkis. The daypack coming with de farpoint 55 it can hold a 16 inch laptop but doesn't provide much protection. Ultimately I found the farpoint 55 at 150 euros and the 40 was 125 euros so not such a big difference. I'm really happy with the 55. If i didn't have the evekis for my laptos i would have bought the 40 though.

Definitely too large for carry on (you'll need to check it in). But I think it can be great for backpacking... e.g. backpacking Europe using trains, overlanding in South America, when you don't strictly need it to be carry on
the men's Farpoint 55 Trek is definitely too big for carry on, it might work sometimes if you're lucky but I wouldn't feel comfortable traveling like this. The female version "Fairview Trek 50" is significantly shorter and should work most of the time, I did something similar for the last 6 years by using a Farpoint 55 in S/M size that is technically 5cm longer than what officially allowed in europe (60 vs 55cm), however due to still "looking small" was never even once rejected by any airline.
can the fairview be used by men? i have foun a good price for the fairview 40. please help me to not regret the choice. thank you
Not sure but I imagine it's fine. Check the seller's return policy just in case...
The back panel on that daypack is just ridiculous and in my opinion makes it absolutely useless. How uncomfortable and sweaty would it be to wear that daypack on a whole day of sightseeing. For this reason I went with the 40 and will buy a seperate quality daypack instead, something like the Talon 22 or Hikelite backpacks.

I have seen quite a few farpoints and fairviews and they were all missing that certain pull.
I have the old version of this bag end it is a dream. And I don't like that zips for zipper the are so visibles (red) in this version.
what’s the percentage chance that the Farpoint 55 is allowed on as carry on ?
100% if the daypack is attached and the airline allows a personal item. Exception is if airline is unusually strict (I'm just thinking of the usual size limits here)
@@indietraveller really ? i thought the porter 46 was technically the max size limit for carry on ? suprised that a 55 farpoint would be allowed in the cabin too... i guess airlines are different , but i thought the 55 farpoint would be a guaranteed No all the time...

Despite watching the whole video it's still unclear to me if the Farpoint 40 now has the same size (e.g. volume) as the new Farpoint 55 main pack. Can you elaborate on that?
Farpoint 55 is actually 40 + 15 (of the daypack). Hope it helps!

@Indie Traveller Well you definitely mentioned that point in your written review which was a great read btw, however I did the test myself (owning both bags) and call that claim BS, I left a more elaborate comment on top for better visibility and further discussion. IMO Ospreys ambition to match official carry-on size/length makes the new Farpoint 55 an inferior product.

I have the newest Fairview 40 and the newest Porter 46. There is no comparison for one bag travel: Porter all day since the changes to the Fairview.
The newer Fairview is a disappointment.
1. CORRECTION The laptop sleeve location does have a zipper to access from the outside without having to open the clamshell
2. No organization pockets on the walls of the inside main compartment.
3. The curved backboard is awesome on cooling the back, and you lose volume space as a result.
4. Top small pocket is just that...small.
5. No shoe sleeve.
6. One size fits all torso adjustment takes more adjusting with changes in pack load or strap adjustments.
I'm still an Osprey Fan.

Hi - I have an older Porter 46 with the non ventilated back and no hip belt - so no good for heavier loads that the Porter 46 can accommodate size-wise (the 46L seem like large litres for this pack!). I was looking to the Trek 55 to give me a more comfortable carry (mesh back/proper hip belt) but I'm concerned that it isn't officially carry on size - do you think the new Porter 46 would give me a proper hip belt that I need? Thanks

IS THERE ANY DIFFERENT BEETWEN WOMAN AND MEN VERSIO? I WANTED TO BUY A 55 WOMAN VERSION BUT ITS SAID THAT IS ION THE SAME SIZE AS 70 ONE, IS IT A TRUTH? AND THE MAN 55 IS SMALLER
Fairviews are slightly smaller (by a few liter), different color options, and have a women's specific fit. Features are the same
I own a Farpoint 40 M/L size and Farpoint 55 S/M size (both bought in 2016, e.g. the preceding model) and just did the test: There's NO WAY I can fit the contents of a reasonably tight packed Farpoint 55 (only counting the main pack here, not using the included daypack!) into the Farpoint 40, well it might work if using brute force and turning the Farpoint 40 into a compression bag but that's not how I packed the 55 in the first place or how I want to travel. On top of that a fully loaded Farpoint 40 budges out like a turtle with horrible weight distribution whereas the Farpoint 55 has a more convenient straight shape with weight much closer to my back and an even front surface that is far better suited to strap my daypack of choice onto it (I use an Osprey Daylite Plus). So based on my first hand experience the "old" Farpoint 55 S/M is clearly the superior carry-on backpack. I honestly never understood the fuss about the Farpoint 40, at the expense of matching official carry-on size lengh Osprey designed a pack that doesn't carry well when fully packed and it doesn't fit in tighter overhead compartments either due to it's awkward turtle like shape. Please note that the Farpoint 55 S/M is significantly shorter (59cm measured) than the Farpoint 55 M/L (66cm measured in store) that's why I bought the shorter S/M in the first place, despite being a 5'11 male. I'm aware that 59cm length is technically still above the official carry-on size limit (
You are comparing different things. The older version of Farpoint 55 was not carry on compliant (even without the daypack) as the dimension and build is different compared to the Farpoint 40. The newest generation (2023) Farpoint 40 and 55 are basically the same in regards to the dimensions.
So you could basically use both as carry on?

Osprey crippled the 55 version main bag so the the mediocre day pack is needed. I do like the 40 as it does NOT have the "administration" or "tech" compartments which are a waste of SPACE and create confusing zippers, IMO.

@@indietraveller I've watched the entire video. The new version of the Fairview 40 is not the same as the older version. The laptop compartment is in the back on the newer 2023 version, the newer is now size adjustable as opposed to 2 different sizes, and the water bottle front lid storage is larger and goes right through the middle as opposed to 2 separate compartments on the older version...
