- The Greatest Hoax in Music History - Milli Vanilli Radio City NY They were hired to pose as the singers for a new group BUT the song became an over night hysteria - number one in the world and they had to go on with the hoax... till one night the playback went into a loop and they run off stage... They even got the GRAMMY !!! and they were NOT the singers...

These guys made these songs famous. The actual vocals could never make it without them that big on these songs. The person who wrote the song/produced/sang it, etc, was the person who signed these poor young guys in their 20s on a record contract and gave them an advance to spend. They were auditioned, before this, and told they would be singing on records. They were given songs from the producer who signed them (he had heard of them and seen them performing, so they were talented). But this producer, Frank, had other plans. After recording these guys in the studio on these tracks, he brought in paid studio session musicians to sing on the same tracks and did not feature the voices of the Milli Vanelli signed duo. They wanted to sing on it, but were told to either comply with their label/producer, or pay back advance money which they (no other source of income), had spent already. They were required to lip sync. They were young, poor, and taken advantage of. they did not sing songs merely recorded by "people", and pretend they were the ones who recorded it. Rather, the people who sang the songs and the producer used these 20s year old models/performers to front their music which they (middle aged and non-spectacular), could not front. Milli Vanelli was tricked. They stood their ground after that initial contract term and REFUSED to do a second album with the producer, who then revealed they were not the actual singers, in order to get a piece of the pie, since the duo insisted to sing or never to represent a new album. They owned up, asked for forgiveness, volunteered their grammy back first which gave the go ahead for a recall etc. What more did you expect them to do? Meanwhile Frank, the producer did the same thing with Bonny M and other acts who could front his vocals. As far as I'm concerned, blame the producer and whoever he hired to do that, not the acts lured in and used.

I was a teenager to that time, but kinda ahead my age when it comes to understand "serious stuff" like the Milli Vanilli drama(and believe me, it was a Drama.In the 80's&90's time period). What I can remember is all the horror blowin it up in tabloid's&TV. It really was a big thing then🙄..no one would have ever expected Rob committing suicide though😣...in my opinion this should teach us something! Everyone of us!! It wasn't suicide, it was an accidental overdose of alcohol mixed with prescription anti-depressants. He had just gotten out of rehab the day before. Farian gave him a wad of cash and he was dead within 24 hours of arriving in Frankfurt. Never, ever give an addict a wad of cash. He was going to leave for more treatment in Germany and then India the next day. He was working on a new album with Farian and Fab. Those recordings have never been released.

The truth is that these two guys were DEFINITELY FUN to watch. And back then basically EVERYONE was Lip-synching in TV shows and obviously in videos. The REAL singers would have NEVER mad it because, they did not have Fab & Rob GOOD look and could not dance like they did. So overall, they were still GREAT artists even though they were not really singing. Fab proved that he actually could really sing. Rob may you RIP. I had a cassette with milli vanilli. They were both good guys being played. Met the wrong producer
The boys sometimes sang live at large venues and concerts. Many people commenting below notice there are differences between the recorded song and what's sung here. Probably because they are singing live. They could sing...from day one. They just didn't sing on the RECORDS. Farian didn't want their accents, he wanted an African-American, soul sound, for the recordings. But live? Rob and Fab could do just fine and did.
There are other performances on TH-cam where you can tell it is them that are actually singing. They also have said they would sometimes sing live at concerts.
The tragedy of their story cannot be overstated.

As for the performance... Extraordinary!!! They were masters at their craft. They were unmatched then and still are today in 2024. There will never be an act like this again. The loss was entirely ours, though it cost Rob his life, and Fab and Carmen (Rob's sister) half of their souls. Shame on the world for betraying them.

And back then people actually wanted a live performance when they paid for it..the new generation so used to being ripped off they don't care..
Contemporary artists "sing" from playback at concerts and they never sing one word in the studio. So do not compare it.
And that's the problem of actually accepting it this way of lip syncs.
It should only be acceptable for lip synch when the performer has an illness at that time of his/her/their performance on stage and they have to perform no matter their health condition. As long as people are already convinced and believed to heart that the performer is true to that own voice/sounds when people bought that song/music earlier, that is not a cheat.
Lip syncing from a totally different person/performing band directly for audiences is thievery.
