One thing that wasn't mentioned in this video is Motivation. To break any addiction you need to have a strong WHY. That means reminding yourself consistently of what you gain by eliminating that bad habit. Without a strong reason you'll, most probably, have mixed feelings about stopping addiction. On the one hand, you really want a better free life without addiction, but on the other - you still have a strong neuro-association between your addiction and pleasure. That is extremely hard to break without a burning desire to change it once and for all.
Yeah, and also I would say that doing hard and painful things by itself isn't helpful. There's always WHY behind any challenge. Anyway, great message and thanks for the video!

If you replace your bad addiction by a good addiction (something that makes your life better) but then you are craving more and more for your good addiction, hence releasing more and more dopamine so in the end, your dopamine level will go down again and you will get less pleasure from your good addiction but nevermind you will keep doing it because you need more dopamine. Is that a problem ? doing something repetitively like a robot but that thing is actually good for your life ? If it's a problem, then what to do ?
1. Find the trigger and avoid it. 2. One month of time to break addition. 3. Create a barrier to the trigger by changing the environment. 4. Do something difficult instead.
What a great video!!! I transformed my life and quit my addiction at the end of August. I slowly introduced new, healthy, productive habits at that time and now, in December, they are second nature to me. I truly look forward to cooking, eating, working out, seeing friends, and being social. You nailed it. I also have that Dopamine Nation book. Hang in there! I actually started to work on my addiction(s... plural) roughly one month ago, after I saw a video from the Andrew Huberman channel, where he interviewed Dr. Anna Lembke herself (the author of the book mentioned in this excellent video). First it was alcohol addiction: now past the 30 days mark and feeling surprisingly well. Some little occasional cravings still, but MASSIVELY more manageable than they were in the first couple weeks. Then it was sugar addiction: eliminated it completely (with the only exception of natural sugar that you might find in fruit). Roughly two weeks in, and same: first couple of weeks pretty full of cravings, now starting to feel pretty on the level. I have other addictions I'm gonna adress down the line, such as nicotine and (yes) internet browsing, but I'm feeling extremely confident because by now I can tell, empirically, that the method presented by Better Than Yesterday in this video, actually *works*. So here: I send you positive energy, and a good measure of encouragement, because I can tell that even if the first couple weeks might be hard, it *will* get easier and you will feel amazing, after a while!

I've been working on it, I'm slowly starting to eat cleaner, I still struggle with porn at times, ive uninstalled distracting apps, I try to spend my time online focusing on making self improvement videos for my TH-cam channel, I've been doing great at that lately without getting distracted, releasing so many videos, I'm finally defeating my internet addiction and using it in a productive manner, instead of being on TikTok or TH-cam shorts or social media

I'm a gamer. I played games all day. It seemed to me that I would not be able to give it up, but then I decided to give it a try. Well, it's been a second week since I haven't played any game. It's strange, but I don't suffer, on the contrary, I just got a lot better. It's nice to realize that I'm not a drug addict
This video has really helped me a lot. I have been reducing my screen time to 1 hour a day and it has changed my life. I have became more productive and I am sure at the end of the month I will be a totally different person.

Geez. I feel like I’d really struggle to go without playing video games for a month. I love video games a lot and don’t think I’ll ever stop because I genuinely enjoy games a lot. But it’s true that the more I play, the less I enjoy my time playing. Taking such a substantial break might help me break the addiction, get caught up on other work, and make playing the games I love actually fun again.

Super insightful, i also like that the premise of the video was dopamine reliance and with this in consideration, watching a boring video would presumably mean that that target audience would not get on board with making it to the end. With the doodle artwork and easy to consider methodology someone like a myself who is maaaybe, a dopamine addict get the useful information without leaving the video prior to getting the "help" or boost i need to do something about it. Dear friend, I am personally in addiction issue. Allow me to tell you that you can't use the word "Addiction" for behaviors that you can stop with a simple program, you may use the word "passion". Addiction is a very powerful and hard condition. In your case for the video games for instance you would be in an internet cafe to play. But anyways i love your videos in general. Thank you
The ideal about the balance between pleasure and pain is great. Sometime we just want to enjoy life and admit ourself that is no problem. But after that pleasure we lose the balance and feel anxious. So doing something hard everyday and get the pleasure after that might work.
I do the same thing with junk food addiction. I simply don't buy them and it creates a barrier. If I have them stored in my kitchen, I would eat them all at once. So, not having them present, helps me a lot. And I tell my friends and family about it. They also try to not bring or offer me any junk food. So I keep my weight under control which makes me feel healthy.

This approach seems too extreme for me (and perhaps for others as well). I'm convinced that even minor adjustments can lead to big changes. For example, simply turning my phone face-down on my desk or putting it in a drawer does the job. It's still accessible, but the slight inconvenience makes me less likely to reach for it mindlessly. My solution: introduce a bit of friction between yourself and your temptations 😉 Anyway thanks for this channel. I really like it 🙂
I always go through phases where I “change my life around”, develop some great habits, learn stuff, read a lot, etc…but eventually I realize that nothing is ACTUALLY changing, it’s all in my head, so I eventually just get back to square one again.
Maybe changing things in your head was a good thing, and you just needed to find a new direction / location/ purpose after that? I hope things got better.

How to delete youtube video is on TH-cam because I did not know it is possible to delete it before.

Super insightful, i also like that the premise of the video was dopamine reliance and with this in consideration, watching a boring video would presumably mean that that target audience would not get on board with making it to the end. With the doodle artwork and easy to consider methodology someone like a myself who is maaaybe, a dopamine addict get the useful information without leaving the video prior to getting the "help" or boost i need to do something about it. Genuinely enjoyed the considerations i have made about myself throughout this video, thank you and I'm going to change my habits and reduce the integrity of some Neurotransmitters starting right now haha.

Dear friend, I am personally in addiction issue. Allow me to tell you that you can't use the word "Addiction" for behaviors that you can stop with a simple program, you may use the word "passion". Addiction is a very powerful and hard condition. In your case for the video games for instance you would be in an internet cafe to play. But anyways i love your videos in general.

The ideal about the balance between pleasure and pain is great. Sometime we just want to enjoy life and admit ourself that is no problem. But after that pleasure we lose the balance and feel anxious. So doing something hard everyday and get the pleasure after that might work.

I do the same thing with junk food addiction. I simply don't buy them and it creates a barrier. If I have them stored in my kitchen, I would eat them all at once. So, not having them present, helps me a lot. And I tell my friends and family about it. They also try to not bring or offer me any junk food. So I keep my weight under control which makes me feel healthy.
This approach seems too extreme for me (and perhaps for others as well). I'm convinced that even minor adjustments can lead to big changes. For example, simply turning my phone face-down on my desk or putting it in a drawer does the job. It's still accessible, but the slight inconvenience makes me less likely to reach for it mindlessly. My solution: introduce a bit of friction between yourself and your temptations 😉 Anyway thanks for this channel. I really like it 🙂
I always go through phases where I “change my life around”, develop some great habits, learn stuff, read a lot, etc…but eventually I realize that nothing is ACTUALLY changing, it’s all in my head, so I eventually just get back to square one again.
Maybe changing things in your head was a good thing, and you just needed to find a new direction / location/ purpose after that? I hope things got better.

Thank you so much for that, I do have to admit that Christmas period gives room to amplify addictions, for me it's shopping, overeating, watching tv. Christmas time allows being fully on the pleasure side of things, it's good to be reminded that lack of control over comfort is not good and I loved your suggestion that the best way to achieve dopamine increase is through doing difficult things, very interesting, thank you!

@@ItsAsparageese Oh hi, it has been going good but I had some bad days as well. I have put a plan for me weekly to complete and I am going to share my achievement after completing the whole plan which is designed for 2 months.
and I can say that one of the best thing which I did was deleting TH-cam app from my phone. when I need it i use it by browser and it is very inconvenient and I am not staying long. How to delete youtube video is on TH-cam because I did not know it is possible to delete it before.
Nothing should change unless it affects our health or routine. The body and everything else have their purposes. Certain habits generate inspiration and mood. Humans are unique individuals.
