    Fun Fact: Current Simpsons co-producer Matt Selman's big break on The Simpsons was writing for Hit & Run. He's 100% on board for a remaster/remake of the game, but he's well aware of the rights issues plaguing it. EA currently has the rights to make The Simpsons games, while Activision might have the rights to the game through Vivendi & Radical Entertainment. Maybe Disney can sort something out? There are a lot of remakes, remasters, & ports of various old Star Wars & Disney games heading our way.

    I think my favorite story about Simpsons Hit and Run was that they were planning on removing the kicking because it was too violent, however before they did they showed a demo copy to Matt Groening, who reportedly immediately started by kicking Marge down the street howling in laughter.

    I think one of the best things about Hit & Run is that the game is made more enjoyable by going for completion. A lot of games with collect-a-thon aspects tend to be a chore to get through, but a truly good game makes you want to 100% it.

    The PC version has a surprisingly good modding scene. Not only have fans modded new characters, missions, maps, costumes, & vehicles from the show, but from other games & franchises. Probably the most impressive mods out there are the "Fully Connected Map" mod & the online multiplayer mod. So it might be possible for you & a friend to drive around a open world Springfield as SpongeBob & Rick Sanchez in a kart from Mario Kart & the airboat from Half-Life 2.

    I remember hearing in an interview with one of the developers that the idea for this game was the idea of taking Road Rage and asking the question, "What if you could get out of your vehicle?". When they realized how fun it was just to walk around, they designed a game around that concept. It wasn't exactly designed to be a GTA clone.

Brings back so much nostalgia for me booting up the old PS2 at my late grandmas house and finding all the collectibles and after I 100% the game I would go around with cheats and try to glitch the game as much as possible. Good yet stressful times (Those damn strict time limits haha). So happy that you are covering this game! Also fun fact that wasn't mentioned in the video but when you get 100% you get access to another cheat code! Idk what the code is on PC, Xbox or Gamecube but I remember on PS2 it was X O X O. It let's you use any car in the game including NPC cars, level exclusive cars (like the rocket car or the monster truck) and even unused cars that were just left in the game files!

    One thing to note about the completion bonus. When you achieve 100% across the entire game, not only will there be a gold completion sticker added to your save file on the stats screen, but it you will also unlock the ability to use a particular cheat code that will allow you to access any car throughout the entire game via the pay phones. This includes pedestrian cars, secret vehicles only found in certain levels, and even one or two cars that aren’t accessible at all while playing the main story. A pretty unique case here. In most games, getting through the campaign is fine while getting all the side content can be a chore. Since it's the opposite here, you can't really give it a Finish it rating.
    Personally, I think there is still room for halfway ratings. There are games that have a good story worth finishing, and a good gameplay loop that encourages you to keep playing, but are so bloated with content that it becomes a chore to 100% Binding of Isaac, Borderlands 2, Pokemon Legends: Arceus, and, my current grind, Age of Calamity, all fall under this.

    "And when you're on foot, you can jump, hit, and... that's about it."
    So wait... you can't run? I was seriously expecting you to say 'Jump, hit, and run.' You know, in Simpsons: Hit and Run.

    Aaahhhhhh!! One of my absolute favorite games for the PS2, and one I have a lot of fond memories of. I had to click on it right away!
    I never saw Jirard's first playthrough of this game, so I don't know what his frustrations looked like then, but if he was playing this game for the first time and expecting it to bear more similarities to the GTA games, then I could understand his initial disappointment. For me, and I can only presume for a lot of players at the time of this game's release, Simpsons: Hit and Run would have been their first GTA game that was, well, more appropriate to play than an actual GTA game. So the nostalgia is a strong factor, as with so many games. But I also think this game could have only worked because of the gags and references to the Simpsons show and its particular brand of humor that you wouldn't associate with the GTA games either.
    On another note, hearing the music tracks from the game really hit all my nostalgia buttons! BRB, gotta go and boot up my old PS2.

    The joy of this game was never playing the “game” part. It’s about goofing off in the world, causing mayhem and destruction in your wake. As a kid, I didn’t even know here was more than Homer’s first level for a LONG time.

    Crazy idea, but this makes me think we need an immersive sim of the Simpsons. Like make a game in the style of Deus Ex or just any of those really in depth games, and just make it the small town of springfield. People know this world so well they'd have a hell of a time just exploring around if you really unlocked the area for them.

    Things I'd want in a remake of Hit and Run:
    1) A completely connected map rather than everything split into separate levels, and more explorable locations in the map
    2) More outfits, vehicles, characters (playable and nonplayable), and collectibles to incorporate tons of material after Hit and Run's release in 2003
    3) New mission varieties, maybe even a "Rode Rage" mission; where it plays just like the Road Rage game, but they're now missions incorporated into Hit & Run

    Sounds like the game wasn't made for you. However, we all know it was a GTA modelled game. But I feel they wanted to be safe with copyright issues and left out unlockable weapons and such. For what the game is, I honestly think it's made for people who love and grew up with The Simpsons. P.S. You're supposed to unlock the other cars to beat levels easier.. The difficulty of the race or destruction run is set to be that difficulty to force you to explore. You seemed to have an iron will.

    Hit & Run is definitely an acquired taste, as I notice the gameplay doesn't tend to win many first time players over, and it's understandable. There isn't much variety in the main missions especially compared to GTA, and the design is archaic, but despite that, I still love this game.
    I love just driving around the maps, listening to the music, the dialogue, casing mayhem with cheat codes, the bonus racetracks, all that.
    I just have so many great memories with this game. It'll always be special to me.

    • @MoostachedSaiyanPrince
      @MoostachedSaiyanPrince 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Tytrovy I dunno about that. I mean, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas came out on the same consoles as Hit & Run, with the exception of the Gamecube. I'll admit I don't know how much processing power that would've taken to make a proper open world sandbox, but if I had to pick three reasons it might not have panned out, I'd say it's limitations with the GameCube version, laziness from the developer, or rushed development by mandated by the publisher. Possibly even a combination of two or all of the three.

    • @Tytrovy
      @Tytrovy 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MoostachedSaiyanPrince Simply put the Road Rage world could've been one open level. But the walls were put in place last minute because the world all in one level was causing the fps to drop really bad. The GTA games were open world because the game only rendered so far. The Road Rage game just kept rendering too much objects to be one level.

    Going on a nostalgia trip of my fave youtubers reviewing the game, but I hope that for the remake, every level is connected but where the game loads for the next level, instead gives the character you're playing a return to X mission where they talk to the next playable character and then swaps over, example, after the last mission on level 1, Homer thinks to himself "I'm going to miss my favorite show! I need my show!" and when Homer gets home, Bart asks Homer a question or something and Homer says something like "go bother your weird big nose friend", then the game goes over to Bart and you make your way to meet Milhouse where the original level 2 would start.
    So the maps are connected, but you have an in-between mission that serves to hand the reins over to the next character of the story and carries on from there, now every character can go on each others level AND you can play as any of the other characters, maybe add in more mini games as well, because you can't be Apu and expect him to still be in the Kwik-E-Mart as an npc so maybe Apu can have Kwik-E-Mart mini-games etc.

    For those who 100% the game, there's a cheat that's exclusive to this condition. It unlocks all cars in the game, and not in the game. Those secret level cars, black Ferrini, Grandpa's WWII vehicle modded are all accessible from the phone booth when you press one of the controller triggers. You also find some interesting vehicles that never made the final release. It's a fun way to replay missions and a nice way to access vehicles I didn't know you could.

    Hit & Run is a game definitely made for Simpsons fans. The references, gags & atmosphere of the game are it's biggest charm. As well as the story which perfectly fits the self referential humor of the show.
    Gameplay wise it obviously has a few issues. Mainly that it is a difficulty become of the time limit for a lot of missions. But at least to me, it never felt like anything I couldn't beat.
    Overall it's still one of my favorite games of that era. Honestly a shame that it's the best Simpsons game we got.

    Main reason this game was compared to GTA was because of free-roam throughout the city, to where you can get out of your car and explore all around you. Not many games did this at the time, and Nuts & Bolts came out years later so I can definitely see it now. I remember my initial reaction was comparing it to GTA at the time, along with Spider-Man 2 being that you could free-swing and walk throughout the city. Whereas Road Rage and the first Spider-Man game had many limitations

    Such a great game. I have fond memories playing it on my GameCube back in the day. A cool little Easter Egg, if you go to your console settings and manually change the date to certain holidays, Homer would wear a costume in the start up menu. Like set it to December 25th, the game would think its Christmas and Homer would be wearing a Santa outfit. So damn cool.

    I actually own Simpsons Hit & Run for the PS2 as well. I did managed to beat the game many years ago. However, the memory on that game got corrupted, causing me to lose all my progress, meaning I had to do everything all over again. Unfortunately, for some reason I can't even complete the first mission without receiving a game-breaking glitch. After beating the first mission, the audio would be cut off, and more than half of Springfield is missing. I can walk on the empty void, but if I so much as jump while I'm walking on the void, Homer Simpson will fall neverending. Too make matters worst, the NPC who I'm suppose to talk to doesn't show up, meaning I'm stuck in limbo, and can't continue.
