I love how Batman’s “non-lethal” approach to dealing with criminals in the Batmobile is to launch them 50 ft in the air with crazy jolts of electricity

I loved this game, only issues was deathstroke, I was so excited to have another go at that fight with the new combat but nope tank fight and then a cutscene
Honestly yeah the fight was super underwhelming cause I thought after I beat the tank it was gonna be a on foot fight from there and then cutscene.
Batman arkham origins handled the batman vs deathstroke very good imo. Although the game isn't really loved, it had amazing boss fights that even arkham knight couldn't do, which were kinda underwhelming.
I kinda wanted a part 2 of the Arkham Origins Deathstroke fight... But With Rocksteadys own little mix up thrown in there... I just think it was dumb to do a boss fight that was a copy of the red hood tank battle earlier in the game

There were 2 boss fights in the game that were good in my opinion. Professor Pyg, and The Riddler, the other ones were bad.

@@maddoxio I wonder how many people batman has killed from stuff like giving people heart attacks when they have PTSD of their attacks from batman.
Initially, when the game released you could only play as one pre-determined character on each challenge map and didn't have the choice to switch characters. But after backlash from fans, they let you switch characters on every map. So you have the fans to blame for your pain.
Made sense to ask for it at the time, it only ballooned when they added more characters a tonne of new AR Challenges as DLC.
If there's no completion bonus, then it's really just the game giving you options for playing how you like, right?

Completionism sounds more like an addiction than a hobby.
Well when it comes down to it, it's both a yes and no, depending on how daunting the game is he might just change the rules to ease himself, after all he is still concerned with his health, and we are too. Aslong as he doesn't hurt himself or the others around him, I think he can continue this job of his. His goal after all is to give us a great story we can somewhat be involved in, and all of us want a happy ending.
That definitely sounds like an accurate description of my "achievement whore" days when the 360 first game out.

The relief I felt when I went into NG+ and saw that I didn’t have to find all of the riddles and riddler trophies again is truly the best feeling and it can’t be stopped.

The thing that fascinates me the most about the series and this game in particular is the sheer amount of dangerous criminals confined in the one area that simply refuse to swear. "Aw Crap" "It's the freakin bat!"

I know this is one of my favourite games
On release, it was reviled. It was BSoDing peoples PCs, constant crashes, there was issues getting refunds, and something about the special editions was extra scummy. It was a while ago, so im wracking my memory, but it was something like the special edition costing more, but not actually including the season pass.

The water and rain effects on the suit are amazing, especially in cutscenes and gauntlet comm chats with the other characters
My favorite part of this game were the stories from the riddle and talking to the villains after catching them. I especially love that the dialogue changes when Batman's secret identity was outed

If you think about the Bat-Tank in context of a Batman who is slowly being taken over by the Joker, subtly whispering in his ear to be more ostentatious and violent over the years between City and Knight then yeah it makes sense, at least to me.
I just wish Rocksteady gaves us a great Deathstroke boss fight instead of a reskin of a tank battle we've already done. That and Riddler in a mech suit is just kinda dumb.

I agree, though the notion of Riddler fighting Batman in a mech fits with how mentally unhinged the former is.
@@ethanator6015they dropped the ball with the bosses, the Arkham Knight should’ve been the hardest boss fight in the series, he knows all of your moves, all your gadgets, and how to counter them, it should’ve tested the players stealth and combat abilities
Two flaws in your theory:
1) Batman only started having Joker in his mind in Knight. Not in City and not before Knight, only in Knight and even then it was only a few hours into Knight
2) He starts using the Batmobille way before he gets joker in his mind. He starts using it very close to the beginning of the game and Joker only gets in his mind about an hour or so into the game
It wasn't that he was just loosing control. There was a reason for his increase in violence. He was afraid. The whole game, the main villain and visions of joker all were part of the story which dealt with Batman's fear. An interesting question to tackle in a story in my opinion. What does the Batman fear?
"I'm not afraid" is my favorite Batman moment of any medium anywhere. It just so personifies his ability to never back down and persevere. Mixed with Kevin Conroy, just gives me goosebumps every time.
I'm a batman freak since childhood. I have no words to explain how this game made me feel... PURE AWESOMENESS
I randomly bought this during a period of not having work for a couple months and was shocked after playing it that I had never heard of it. Unbelievable, to the point I have suggested it some friends, but they haven't played it as I know they probably underestimate it in the same way I did before....and so it continues.
It's weird how it doesn't get as much praise as we think it deserves, probably the sloppy launch in PC affected it a lot, which is a shame.
I personally think it’s the worst of the series, but had a ton of fun with it.

My biggest problem with this game was the lack of solid encounters with Batman's Rogues Gallery. Every game before it had some memorable and incredible fights, including Arkham Origins. But in this one, it was all nearly non-existent, and the boss fight against Deathstroke, one of the best hand to hand combatants in the DC Universe, was relegated to a tank battle. Very disappointing for me, but it still wasn't a horrendous game by any means. Just didn't live up the standards of the previous entries.
and that be Jirard's point as well, Arkham Knight was faced with an impossible challenge of living up to Arkham City's HIGH bar, yet still innovate and surprise everyone, something that... honestly in the eyes of fans... is even more daunting than Bruce's crusade to see a peaceful Gotham.

Idk, man. Doctor Pyg, Man-bat and most of the dlc encounters were pretty good, imo. I guess City had more though, so I get why it was disappointing.

This game blows my mind. It's so good. The best parts are the batmobile/tank, option of preferred Batman suit, and Riddler challenges. Of course, fighting modes have always been my favorite in the series. I'm just saying that those Riddler challenges are downright GENIUS.
Honestly the arkham series alone is why the riddler is one of my fav batman villains.

late to the party, i know but here goes, arkham knight depends how much you like the batmobile, and to me was ok, but after a while kind get in the between me and fun, and the combat with it even at the hardest difficulty personally was at most : okay.

First i want to apologize for my English, I´m from Argentina.
I'm really glad you enjoyed it, but i wanted to clarify, at least from the perspective of a huge Batman fan. It's not the mechanics of the Batmobile that ruined my experience, it´s the excess of it. It doesn't feel like a Batman game with the Batmobile, it feels like a Batmobile game with Batman. Characters like Riddler or Deathstroke change their entire modus operandi to force the player into the car. It really seems like Batman is a complete incompetent who cannot take two steps without having to get in the Batmobile for some absurd reason. When I thought of a Batman game with the Batmobile I thought of chases, transportation and some puzzles, yes, but not this degree of dependence. Added to that a plot that doesn't make much sense when you think about it, with two lackluster main villains (Scarecrow and Arkham Knight), and it really left me disapointed.
And I kid you not, as a kinda completionist myself (not at your level, of course) my favorite part of the game were the challenges, because I got to play as my favorite members of the Batfamily that I think all the Arkham games have underutilized. Sorry for the essay

I remember completing this game. It will forever hold a special place in my heart, in actually came bundled with my brand new PS4 back in the day.
Sure a few trophies, for example the one where you have to fly under 3 bridges in one go, the ABC brutality one and sometimes the Batmobile AR challenges were a pain in the ass sometimes, but damn it was also so much fun completing this one.
I maybe even go back and recomplete it, been a while since.
This game is a masterpiece as the entire Arkham Series is, the graphics even up to today is still amazing and overall a fun game.
Fingers still crossed for a good Superman game that keeps his core mythology as accurate to rhe the comics as popular

The assault on the GCPD mission was freaking amazing
The tank part was great but the rooftop is in my top 3 least favourite parts of the game. I died over 20 times (on the easiest difficulty)

Yeah I live scarecrow, and honestly I wish there were more dynamic boss fights. The scarecrow challenge race maps were so god damn fun to do and I wished that they were in the main game, because that would have made the gameplay be more fun which I’m sure we all want.

This game is underrated af its got perfect graphics, more playable characters and perfect combat and predator sections than any arkham game. Also the grapnel boost is fricking awesome just saying
Except the story is trash, tank battles are stupid (I'm playing Batman not World of Tanks), boss fights suck, and they lied about The Arkham Knight being an original character. Also if you've ever read a Batman comic you'll see the Jason Todd twist coming a mile away.

A couple thoughts, as someone who thought Arkham Knight was only an ok game.
The reason people were angry about the cutscene being locked behind completion was the riddler trophy that would get glitches, and couldn't be fixed without restarting the game.
The reason people didn't like the bat mobile was because it takes up over half the playtime of the main game.
And the reason I didn't much care for the game was the lack of fun bossfights in the main storyline. Seriously, the only one I enjoyed was the helicopter one, because that was before I was burnt out with the batmobile.
Should be noted I was going to complete this game, but then the riddler trophy glitch happened, I called bs, then dropped the game after finishing the main story.
A couple thoughts as someone who thinks this game gets way too much hate.
Firstly, while the ending is locked behind collectables, it makes sense for the story, no way would Batman "retire" while any supervillain was still around. Secondly, the ending you get without the Knightfall protocol is still a completely viable ending I'd say, the Knightfall one is just a badass tease for 100%ing the game. I don't think locking it behind the trophies was a bad idea.
And with the Glitches some get with the Riddler trophies, it sounds like it did you dirty, which is an unfortunate thing absolutely. I didn't have any glitches happen to me personally.
And with the Batmobile thing, that's just plain wrong. "ThatBoyAqua" did a video of this game, and after 100%ing it, dlc included, he counted the time he used the Batmobile and it was more like a quarter. Even less if you're talking about the moments you HAVE to be in it.
Even then, the Batmobile mechanics work fantastically still, while I admit I prefer Batman's gameplay, the Batmobile makes sense, and still provides a good challenge.
My primary flaws are the Arkham Knight being a whack ass character, the lack of good bosses and some underwhelming side-missions. So I agree with you in those aspects.
But I think the game provides the most polished gameplay I think I've ever seen in a game, as well as a fantastic representation of an angry, beaten down Batman. The focus on his mental instability is so well done, as is his connection with The Joker.
@@ThelateDomC. you’ve replied to this better than anyone could have and were respectful the whole time, both of great points! (It feels like I’m a teacher right now) As a kid growing up with the Batman Arkham games playing them I’ve never felt like one was really “the worst” there were just some I played more than others. When I was younger I didn’t like Arkham Asylum because it’s scared the shit outta me, which is funny now. I don’t think Arkham Knight OR Arkham Origins should be as disliked as they are. This video out it best because of the expectations fans had and hype there was no way most of us could have gotten the game we were all dreaming of. That being said though, now years later we look back on these games fondly and while we have had troubles with the game/s, we can still enjoy all of the fun it gave us! So while we all have our own way of looking at these games, we can all agree that they won’t be forgotten anytime soon!

@@ThelateDomC. with the batmobile maybe it just felt like it took up so much time because most of the main story bosses use it. Also I do still love this game, it just happens to be my least favorite of the 4. Never got to play the dlc for it sadly. Now with that all out of the way, to respond to the last point you made:
The game was definitely not polished when I played it (on launch) and it still didn't feel polished after a few weeks. I should probably replay it to experience it's modern state, but I remember frame drops, crashes, and glitches galore, and I wasn't even on the PC version that supposedly was even worse.
I had no problem with the batmobile, it was really fun to use and people have been wanting to use it for a long time, so why not fulfill that wish?

I personally don't think any one Arkham game is objectively better than the other since each one has a specific field they specialise in. That being said, my favorite would have to be Arkham Knight. I'm not blind to it's issues but it just ticks off a lot of the right boxes for me.

For me you are wrong, City is the best for me and a lot of fans, this game disappointed me the most in a long time, story is shit and retcons other stuff from City, a lot of bosses are lame, side missions that would be interesting like Hush or Man-Bat, they make it shit, one cutscene and button click, Hush is down, fly for Man-Bat, click button watch scene, repeat until the mission ends

@@DoganME It's just you're telling me that the story is bad. What about it is bad? It perfectly wraps up the Arkham series even though we're getting a Gotham knights game later next year. Plus the side missions I thought were very well executed. The side missions in Arkham City are "WAY TOO EASY". You can literally do all of them in one day except the Riddler. That one takes days to finish on its own.

Thank you! Thank you for this great review and standing up for this game. I personally loved Arkham Knight. And I never understood the hate it got. Yeah maybe the story was kind of predictable. Maybe the batmobile had too many missions. But really they were just minor things to me. I still liked playing with the batmobile. I still loved the Riddler challenges. I swore off of Riddler stuff in Arkham City, but I really didn't mind doing all the side missions and the Riddler Challenges this time. I never touched the AR stuff or other challenges though. I played on a PS4 and there was only 1 time I encountered a bug where I fell through the map. That's it. The game is solid, looks great, and upped the game play from the previous games. It was just fun to play and never made me resent getting it. It deserves a lot more respect than it gets.
Do "Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain" next! :)

After not playing any games since I was a kid, the recent Batman movie got me interested in this game serious. So I bought an XBox One and all 4 games and played through them this year.
They’ve all been excellent but Arkham Knight is by far my favorite!
The detail and scope of the city, the water and rain effects… but most of all just gliding across the rooftops and driving through the streets in the Batmobile are what make this game for me…

So glad you reviewed this game when you did! I'm currently playing through the Arkham games for the first time and I've been somewhat scared to play both Origins and Knight for the hate they get. But hearing this review has been very encouraging! Unfortunately I have to wait to play Arkham Knight until I get a PS5 (don't have a PS4), but I just beat City today on Wii U and Origins is coming in very soon!

The Arkham Knight twist was ...so easy to see. I was more surprised the twist in the TellTale game with 'Arkham' baddy.
Telltale were doing some good storytelling in their Batman games.
I loved Telltale's version of Batman. After having so many games where you play as just Batman, it was very refreshing to have the chance to be both Bruce Wayne and Batman, especially when we get to choose which persona to use. Arkham was a neat villain with an identity that you didn't see coming, but season 2 was just so much better and it looked like Telltale was heading into a new, better direction until they went bankrupt and were bought by someone else.
In all honesty, I don’t think that rocksteady thought of the Arkham Knight’s identity as a twist. I think they thought of the joker thing as the big twist, and Jason’s still being alive is used to have more of a psychological effect on Batman’s character than be a shocking twist to players

When they showed off the game for the first time, a lot of comic-savvy people jumped to the conclusion that the Arkham Knight was Jason Todd, only to be told from interviews that the Arkham Knight "is an all-new character" and when questioned about if there's any Batman stories they're taking as inspirations, they just kinda evaded the question saying that "they're creating their own mythos"
I feel like if you didn't count on the Arkham Knight to be as big of a twist you wouldn't just straight up lie to the people that have already figured it out
Really makes me wonder if it would've helped the game's reception if they had just called the character Red Hood from the start
@@bounderby99 oh they DEFINITELY intended the identity to be a twist. You have the first act introducing the Arkham Knight. He mentions how he knows "everything about Batman" in detail. Then there is the Jason Todd thing which is supposed to deepen the mystery...and slowly before the Arkham Knight is revealed...his suit becomes more and more red. Until the "big" moment where they want it to be a "surprise!, this is a secret, Red Hood origin story all along!". But it was no surprise and it hit like a big thud.
I never understood the hate for this game. I thought it was and is a great end to this game franchise.

Main reason from what I remember was the PC port. It was unbelievably terrible and ALOT of TH-camrs played it down... Some even said fans had been lying about the bugs. It created this weird wedge between fans of the older games and the reviewers of this game. I did love the game, when I eventually got around to playing it on PS4.
They used a crazy small team to port it to PC.

The batmobile was never terrible, it was just used too damn much. People (myself included) got sick of it. So when someone asks you just remember that batburnout so 'batmobile bad!!'
This game is the "what could have been" disappointing thanks to the change in writers. The writer from the first two games never came back for the third. Shoved in was the batmobile instead of splitting it's game time with the Batplane. The game could have had co-op and couch co-op, but nope just play by yourself and switch characters on the fly sometimes. The loss of the one of the original writers *Paul Dini* is the beginning and end to this game with new work consisting of the Riddler making race tracks for Batman??? It's a shame considering this game had to follow two game of the year winners. This is *NOT* how you end a trilogy.

Actually, only two writers didn't return, and that was Paul Dini and Paul Crocker. Sefton Hill, who co-wrote Arkham City with Paul Dini and Paul Crocker, came back to pen the script for Arkham Knight. Ian Ball also makes a return, writing/designing the side quests, once again. Not to mitigate Paul Dini's work with the Arkham series, but Paul Crocker is the person to also thank for Arkham Asylum and Arkham City's wonderful dialouge, since he wrote most of it; Paul Dini even said as much, when reflecting on his work with Rocksteady Studios and their Batman games. In essence, two writers jumped off, while the other two decided to stay on. Not that big of a deal. Direction didn't change either, since Sefton Hill was the writer and director for all three Arkham games. Overall, Arkham Knight's main story received a lot of love and attention from it's writers. I thought the pacing and plot points in Arkham Knight were good, not perfect, but certainly better than City, in some regard. The second act of Arkham City was a black hole that deliberately sucked up the player's time to lengthen the overall campaign; thus, it ruined the pacing of the story, by quite a sizable margin. Arkham Knight didn't have any real problems with pacing, everything flowed nicely, but, that's not to say Arkham knight has a perfect story, either. No, far from it. I think the only Arkham game that had a perfect story was Arkham Asylum, it was much more narratively focused and had a neat premise to boot. Each Arkham has their own set of flaws, but each are fantastic in their own regards.
I wish Arkum Origins was made with the Animated Series art style. Now THAT would have been memorable.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who likes the batmobile in arkham knight but also the challenge maps are insane to complete. Also I wish I could play through the story as all the different batmobiles and free roam as all the other characters like batgirl and Harley Quinn etc maybe have stuff to do in gotham as other characters while free roam like you do as Batman. Idk maybe in the next Batman Arkham style game if there's a new one ever to be made.
Glad you acknowledged this game. It amazes me that most people seem to forgot about it, while being one of the most atmospheric and tightest gaming experiences I ever had. And it still looks better than most games released today (!)

I just finished the Telltale games of Batman and was thinking of playing the Arkham games finally. This video makes me think I should even more now.
Make sure not to skip Origins. It got left out of the remasters and then the collection, wasn't even ported to current gen, but it's definitely worth a play.

Arkham Knight has the best story in the series. My favourite thing about Batman is how he is always presented with temptations to give in to an easy immoral choice but through incredible mental strength and perseverance, he pulls through always. All the time. This is done in previous Batman games too but it's one of the central themes in Knight. The joker, in this game and within this universe from Batman's perspective, is characterized as this mercilessly terrifyingly sadistic and relentlessly force of evil that defies morals. And given what Joker's done to Batman in the Arkham verse and pretty much any other media, it's easy to believe given the uncompromising lengths of evil to get what he wants is a good representation of what Batman fears most. This image of Joker, Batman's polar opposite, who's killed and terrorised his closest allies and friends is constantly espousing ideas of what Batman should and shouldn't do. It's contextualised by the brilliant use of the plot device of the fear toxin having an extended effect. By this way, Rocksteady gave players a window into Batman's mind and what he is thinking about any given point in story. We know all the time what Batman's thinking about at any given moment. This level of personal connection with Batman is missing in all previous Arkham games. This is interactive storytelling at its best. We know what's going on inside the hood because his fears are being spoken aloud. This makes Batman incredibly human while still doing justice to his "extraordinary mortal among ordinary mortals" side of the character. It's in Batman's nature to be stoic brooding and refusing to give in to the immoral temptations that his villains, particularly the Joker, always confront him with. It's a story of overcoming fears with a great deal of perseverance and self control while being surrounded by situations that cause self-doubt. That makes Batman the hero he is and the story of Arkham Knight does that beautifully. I am surprised and flabbergasted by how well Rocksteady knows Batman that they were able to weave a story about Batman's perseverance and self-doubt. The story of good in people and in Batman and his strength required to outlast the forces of inward evils. Joker was Batman's fear and Scarecrow was the catalyst of that fear. I am surprised by how they managed to create a stoic but an emotional character in Batman better than previous games.
This is my favorite game I got 240% and 100% trophy’s including DLC ON PS4!
The Arkham completion run is complete. I wouldn't say Arkham Knight is hated, just viewed as disappointing. We were promised a climatic finale to the Rocksteady trilogy, but it didn't turn out that way.
It's the story and boss battles that hold the game back when they were so well done in Asylum and City. Outside of that, just about everything Knight does in terms of core gameplay is equally strong.

Finally you review this game. SOOOOOO many valid points. I have my quirks with the batmobile like everyone else but this game holds up to the other games in the series easily and was the most detailed, most deep, and most well thought out one.

Great review, Gerard. I completed this game just a few months ago, getting my 50th platinum trophy for it. It's a special game, to be sure. Still like Arkham Asylum more, though, just for the atmosphere.
It doesn't feel awful holding a shoulder button to enter Battle Mode. As a matter of fact, its much more effective to use when in tricky situations like the Cloudburst battle to know for how long and faster it feels to transition between modes.
26:11 I like that completing the main campaign is essential to the Knightfall protocol considering everyone knows who he is now (except Nigma who outright denies it). it’s the perfect ending to the Arkham legacy.
It's overly-ambigous and cryptic. It leaves me feeling empty and unsatisfied.

I actually replayed AK a couple weeks ago after being inspired by a retrospective. It was better than I remembered and this time I had the Season Pass content too which was great. It's a solid game, i'm not sure locking the true ending behind the Riddler trophies was anyone's idea of fun though, that was the only thing I didn't do
I always enjoyed the Riddler stuff, though it does take some time. None of the riddles are any harder than many combat challenges. Plus, the chance to put Riddler in his place is so satisfying.
The secret ending thing is honestly the only criticism i don't understand, like most games with secret "true endings" are usually praised for having that as a reward for completing the campaign why is it a problem with arkham knight specifically? Is it just people hate the riddler that much? He's my favorite villain so idk why the hate for him...

I’ve been meaning to give this another play through sometime. I wasn’t the biggest fan of it the first time, as the story and Batmobile sections really didn’t work for me, but maybe giving it another try will yield better feelings.

i absolutely loved the tank battles they were super fun and suprisingly easy in new game plus too. i played all the batman games and i have to say that when they said that this game will have a batmobile i was super excited and couldn't wait to try it out. And now that i have play trough it twice i didn't feel like there was too muck tank combat, for me it was perfect. Anyways i love your channel keep posting these great videos

Having finally gotten to play Knight, I'd say I still prefer the first two. However, Knight is still a hell of a lot of fun. Such a great series.
My real only complaint for this game is how they shoved the Bat Tank down your throat in the final act of the game, I actually enjoyed the batmobile but it was just way overused. Other than that this game was amazing
A friend recently showed off Arkham Knight due to both of us loving the Spider-Man games and he finally convinced me to start this series. I'm probably not going to complete any of the games except maybe this one if I really want that 240% bonus, but that will probably be over a prolonged period of time and not all at once. I'm loving Asylum so far and really appreciate you covering this whole series so I know which games I don't have to stress over 100%ing challenges
