I am a native spanish speaker (from argentina), there is a lot of things we, as native speakers, don't know about our own language, it's amazing
If you listen to Spanish while you sleep or listen to it in general a lot, you will start to feel what is correct. It's difficult to remember rules but helpful to understand them.

Yes, any implicación of movement to the Spanish ear will be 'a'.
A good example is fuera VS afuera and dentro VS adentro. The a version being used to signify that there is some sort of movement to the outside or inside involved.

You guys, I first and primarily give God glory for any progress I make in Spanish.
But after God, this man Qroo Paul has helped me speak a good amount of Spanish (not fluent yet😅).
One of the best feelings I experienced is slowly understanding salsa songs I’ve always loved even before learning Spanish and even hearing some of the phase techniques he mentions in his videos!
But you HAVE TO BE CONSISTENT! Study twice as hard on the days you don’t want to!
If you learned English, you have the capability to learn Spanish (or any language)! Don’t give up!

i would like to add something, in the pharse "I got early to pack my suitcase" you translated to "me levante temprano para hacer la maleta" you can also translate it as "me levante temprano a hacer la maleta" but i prefer the first option because it sounds better, but it's no bad the second option

Hi Paul - a two word phrase for 'hot dogs' investigations, male comes out perros panchos investigations (not investigaciones, but that part in English). The female gender is different.
My pronlems are para/por and bien/bueno. I just cant hold the differences in my head. And ive lived in Spain since 2010 !

In the specific case of "Fui al parque a leer un libro" you whould use a because going to the park its not necesary to read a book, you are just going to the park to read it.

En el caso especifico de Fui al parque a leer un libro, se usa a porque no estas obligado a ir a un parque para lee, si dijeses voy al parque para leer, esto suena a que si quieres leer es obligatorio ir.
Si el ejemplo fuese voy a la panadería a comprar el pan, estaría bien dicho también fui a la panaderia para comprar pan. Aunque este segundo caso suene un poco raro como español no lo miraria raro. También, el ejemplo de la panaderia se podria decir fui a por pan a la panadería, queda más informal y se usa (creo) también en Latam

Been watching probably over a year and this was the first time I got that difficult subjunctive part you're talking about because I knew all the other bits so rather than the entire sentence, the para que + subjunctive was the only new input ❤
I love you use fairly complex themed transliations sometimes. It means as well as learning grammar I learn new vocab and language constructs as an aside. "I need time to reflect on this" is a great phrase and introduced me to reflexionar and heck how did I know tarde but not temprano? :O
Superb again. You explained in such a straightforward and simple (as simple as is possible given the concept) way that is was easy to understand. I admire your command of the language but more than that I'm in awe of the breadth and depth of your knowledge of it. Especially considering that you're self-taught. That clearly required a lot of effort and dedication.

I'd noticed this without identifying ir/venir as the culprits rendering A instead of PARA. This is one of those constructions I think which will help me go from B2 to C1. Thanks Paul.
I worked it out based on what Michel Thomas said in that any verb implying movement is followed by ‘a’, volver, empezar, ir, venir e.g “ella volvió a la tienda a comprar pan” but tbh I don’t know if this exactly the same rule!
I write messages to my Spanish daughter in law in Spanish and take my lead from her.

In all my years of classroom Spanish, even at an advanced level, and a study abroad in Costa Rica and many many visits to South America, this is the first time I've been taught this. I must have heard others use it without realizing it (it's also been almost 15 years since I used Spanish regularly) but I would have definitely used para. My brain only had the idea of por vs para, not also para vs a.

Hi, Paul! A construction ive seen more recently is 'tener de algo' perhaps its something youve covered and i can't see but i thought perhaps its something you feel might deserve a video? The two examples i saw were "tengo de historias" and "no me des las gracias, no tienes de eso". Love the channel!

Thanks, Paul, another good short video. Talking of the online translators: yes, Deepl us very good I and it was the one I used mostly. But since I tried (reluctantly) Yandex translator it became my go-to dictionary/translator. Because by quality it's on par with Deepl but gives you much more - all the grammatical info plus loads of usage examples from films and shows, which I consider to be gold for language leaners. Of course for word or a word combination, not for the whole chunk of random text.

Before DeepL - I remember when Google Translate, years ago but almost overnight, went from horribly bad to fairly good. Machine Learning - it was teaching itself through a made up language. Fascinating (if, like me, you're a geek 😁).
In most sentences, even if "a" is more common, "para" is correct as well
I must have e gotten better, as soon as I read that flowers sentence it seemed to be subjunctive to me. I just translated it differently though I was thinking
Deje flores a lado de mi cama para que mi esposa supiere que le amo

If you want to make suggestions with 'podías/podrías', use the later if you want to convey a constructive suggestion for improvement or to sound polite:
-Podrías lavar el coche con más frecuencia.
-Podrías venir a mi casa y ayudarme con los deberes.
And use 'podías' if you want to sound more casual or propose some activity:
-Podías venirte a pasar unos días con nosotros.
-Se me está ocurriendo que podías regalarle un libro. [I'm just having the idea that]
Again, these are subtle nuances, not grammar rules, and you could 100% use them interchangeably in the examples above without anyone batting an eye.
Hey Paul, I’ve been watching your videos and I think you have some great topics. My Spanish has been improving but I think my reading and speaking has outpaced my comprehension. Do you have any tips for comprehension or can you explain when it clicked for you?
I just had this sentence on Duolingo: "Dudo que invite a su suegro a celebrar Navidad."
Am I correct in the assumption that in this case we should use "a" and not "para", because the suegro would (not) be viniendo or yendo?

Re Deepl its OK for formal stuff but rubbish at 'street' Spanish. I read Spanish newspapers online and even in El Pais often come across more conversational language. I refer to SpanDict. Its a US translator but brilliant at non standard vocab. It gives actual examples in sentences showing different country versions.

Thanks for expanding on this topic! I'm curious if you know of other verbs besides ir and venir that trigger the use of "a" instead of "para'? I know that there are other "verbs of motion" like empezar that trigger using "a", although in those cases it doesn't translate to "in order to" - so it's a bit of a different topic. For example, "Empecé a sentirme mejor."
Yes, there are other verbs that will take a certain preposition, like A, before another verb. They fall into categories:
verbs of beginning: empezar, comenzar
verbs of learning and teaching: aprender, enseñar

Very interesting, Paul! I'd like to comment that I have noticed one feature of English accent here. Native English speakers tend to pronounce the Spanish letter "y" as they would do in English. That's right if we have vowel + 'y' + consonant/end of word, like in the world 'hoy'. However, if right after the 'y' comes a vowel, then it is always pronounced as English 'j'. An example is "proyecto" where "y" is pronounced as 'j' in project.
Well, that's at least what I have observed in my own Spanish accent from Spain. In Argentinian accent, y+vowel would get an 'sh' sound, I guess.
Thanks for watching and commenting. I lived in Mexico for several years and y sounds like an English y. My wife is from Colombia and she pronounces it like a j in English. I occasionally do the same. I'm a sponge...lol.
I have good friends from pretty much every Spanish-speaking country in the Americas except Paraguay (although I have travelled there). The pronunciation of “y” varies greatly by region, between different people in the same region/country, and sometimes even by the same person, depending on the emphasis they are placing on the “y” word. And there is commonly an intermediate “y” sound, not quite the hard “j”, but not exactly an English-sounding “y”. It has to do with the position of the tongue against the palate - it’s flatter against the palate in Spanish, whereas in English the mouth / lips are more rounded. And of course there is the iconic Argentinian “zh”.

Yes. I used to explain it that way but it confused some viewers who applied it to verbs like "levantarse" because it involves movement.

The one you've most likely heard is "Cierra," with a C, which is a conjugation (third person singular) of the verb "Cerrar" or "To close"
Ex. Él *cierra* la puerta (He *closes* the door)

A bit of a tangent, but I know that you often recommend DeepL over Google Translate, but I've found that DeepL will often give me "Spain-Spanish" translations. For example, conjugating with the vosotros. Given that you focus on Mexican Spanish (and your wife is Colombian), doesn't that mean it will often give you translations that you yourself would never say? Personally I've been really loving Reverso Context. Their translations always come with a slew of variations in-context (thus the name), and they have a powerful rephraser tool, along with synonyms, conjugation tables, etc.
You're right. DeepL does give translations that are more in line with European Spanish; however, it does allow you to click on a word and get alternatives. That's what I do if the initial translation doesn't fit Latin American Spanish. I'll check out Reverso Context. Thanks for the tip!
Love the comments that come with your videos. I've tried Deepl and decided it wasn't worth the effort to shift. Another commenter suggested Yandex Translate and I didn't connect with it at all ... but Reverso looks like it could be my go to ... puts so many tools under the same umbrella.
Oops ... Reverso failed the conjugation test for me. When I'm reviewing a conjugation I still need to see the English starting point as in 123 Teach me. ;-(
It may seem like "mi mujer" is the worse sounding as an english speaker but "esposas" are handcuffs so your choices are "so that my woman would know" or "so that my handcuff would know", just to defend Spanish speakers for the choice of "mi mujer" 😅
