Yesterday, I traveled to Erwin, TN to survey the damage along the Nolichucky River and Unaka Springs Rd. I stopped at Uncle Johnny's Hostel on River Rd to witness up close the damage caused by the severe flooding from Hurricane Helene. #HurricaneHelene #flood #vlog
Thank You, it’s good to see it is still there, I hiked the Appalachian trail in 2022, and spent a month working at Johnny’s hostel from a broken foot, rawhide is my trail name…I got to be good friends with the owner and workers
🥺 I live a couple miles from Uncle Johnnies.... when you started, i recognized nothing... but the railroad bridge. Could not figure out where you were... am in tears... was told about the damage, saw some video's.... but this brought it home. Tried to walk across the railroad bridge many years ago. To get back over to mt inlaws house. My husbands bright idea. I have a fear of height.... got out on the bridge.... froze. My husband picked me up and carried me the rest of the way laughing his behind off.... 😪 looks a lot different now
I am glad I could share the situation and show you how things really look. Thanks for sharing your memories with us. I really appreciate it. Be sure to subscribe to my channel. Have a good night.
Holy cow! I used to live in Knoxville and have been to Erwin. Man… I’m so sorry. I’m concerned with climate change and rebuilding again the same spots. Catastrophic flooding is going to happen long term and we have to commit massive spending to move roads and bridges higher or we are gonna be dealing with this again.
@@jeannelyon-potter4756 I have more footage from October 16 that I recorded from my big Canon camera. It is the same area. I need to edit and upload it. Be sure to subscribe to my channel. Have a Super Saturday!
Thanks for the great footage. My husband’s mother lives in Erwin. We still can’t get over the damage. We camped at the KOA and Riverview campgrounds. If you could we would like to see footage of 107 going there. The river is mighty and the people strong.
We delivered a truck load of stuff ( chain saws, sleeping bags, cleaning supplies, ect...) to south side freewill Baptist church last week in erwin. We ( my wife and myself) are going next week with a couple of crews and some equipment next week to help, if we can. I hope to take a bunch of temporary heaters, if I can find some. Everyone, work through your church, that's the best way to get your money and supplies where they count.
Oh my Lord. I wouldn't recognize it if it wasnt for the letters on the facia. Where the hell did the forest go? Where the hell did the little hills go? The train tracks and the parking lot for the river access? Thats insane, i remember that being 100 feet wide at the widest point. My heart goes out to all affected
It definitely took damage, I see alot is gone.. the fence and the building looking in from the road, by the van’s, the little shed in the back drew and his dog gonzo stayed in there
I’m praying everything get better and ,,,They are all going to be flooded out again, and with that said, there should not be any rebuilt homes or buildings, below the high water mark of the flood waters, nothing is safe , if they let people build in the same areas, the government, should not allow them to rebuild at all under that high water mark point, ok ,,,it’s a sad day to see people sitting themselves up for repeat 🔁 flood disasters,if they stay, thanks , BigAl California praise Jesus Christ grace,
I don’t know for sure if he had any flood insurance but there is a Go Fund Me account. He is still open. It said in the newspaper that he was still renting the cabins in the back.
I stayed at the Mountain VIew Inn in 2020. I also won an auction online and picked up at Sheriffs department. Do you know if the people that ran the motel made it through ok. The guy at the sheriffs office was a older man and was a jailor/deputy type. All were nice people and thought of them when I saw this happening. I am from middle TN. Take care and wish the best for you.
I would more than likely think the people that managed the motel made it safely out because if they didn’t get out we would have heard about it on the news. Thanks for commenting. Be sure to subscribe to my channel. Have a Fabulous Friday!

So a month later is the Chestoa Bridge rebuilt or something that can be use to cross there? I ask because Google Maps shows directions from Uncle Johnny's to the church across the river uses the bridge.
Now, you need to walk to the main highway, Jackson Love Hwy and walk down River Rd to reach Uncle Johnny’s Hostel. Thanks for commenting. Be sure to subscribe to my channel. Have a good night and morning.
I was told some were badly damaged but if that is correct I am not sure and can not confirm it to be true. I will look at my videos. I will upload more footage tomorrow. Thanks for commenting. Be sure to subscribe to my channel. Have a nice night.
@@BigOvlogger Thanks, will subscribe, I have family there. They lived a few yards on the left after turning left crossing the bridge. They're good but those folks got wiped out 😞.

The lesson in Erwin is not to build structures like houses or commercial and industrial buildings close to a river.

So many trees gone across from Uncle Johnny's, next to the river. It used to be wooded. I heard that he did not have flood insurance.

@BigOvlogger he said it in one of his videos. So sad for so many.

I was just going to add that Uncle Johnny himself did pass away on February 12th, 2018. His full name according to the Obituary is John M. Shores.

Are the houses and old hotel still in Unaka Springs by the train trestle!

Can anyone tell me if Mike & Peggy at Cantarosso Farm, Bailey Lane just over the railroad tracks from Chestoa Pike are ok?

It looks better. But take years to rebuild. It never be same.

Are you the Miller at the Miller's Auto & Towing Service in Erwin, TN that gave me the ridiculous price of $1100 to replace 4 shocks on my SUV?
