As someone with Asperger’s Syndrome whose had to put up with the so-called "special needs" section within each school, I can honestly say how much more sickening this situation is.
Mental health issues have been ignored in this country for years and rather than spend resources on helping these people lead fulfilling, lives they are locked up and ignored. It says all you need to know about a government by how they treat their most vulnerable. Disgusting.
The treatment of these people is disgusting. I can only imagine how Daisy felt having no privacy, no agency, and being treated like she can't do anything - while she has the capacity to do lots. People with disabilities and autism (like myself) are people with the right to dignity.
As a mother of autistic children this to me is unfathomable. My son is mine, I've raised him, fought for him when all the specialists gave up and told me they'd never walk, talk or be able to have a normal life. My boys do it all now, yes the asd causes issues bit i work with them to understand why, how to manage and support them in doing it. The schooling system for sen kids is vile, my son was filmed naked by another kid while naked and changing for swimming, he was left unattended by staff that were meant to be with him every minute but they failed.... That video was distributed, my son bullied and tried to hang himself on school grounds was kicked out, permanently excluded apparently under safeguarding. The kid that filmed my son was also 11yrs old, same age but he'd distributed the video. When my son was kicked out, that boy was kept in the school for more than 2yrs after.
So sorry to hear that😞 Hope you and your beautiful son are doing much better now. He has just as much rights as everyone else and it's disheartening for the government to be so inefficient at creating genuine plans to help vulnerable people rather than locking them up. Disappointment isn't even a good enough word for the shambles that the government allow. Wish you all the best and hope things in the world for the most vulnerable get better because they matter just as much as everyone else❤
My mum and dad are hitting their 70s and they adopted my cousin who has serious learning difficulties. They have had him since he was 6 months old. He is in his 30s now and we would never dream of putting him in care.

This doesn't make sense to me at all. Dangerous people who were put out to 'care in the community' and damaged those communities and re-offended, but children or young adults who can be housed or live with their loving families are locked up??? Where is the sense of it?

Our Social services want to pull the funding and put him in a supported living house with 2 other people like him and only 2 staff. Unfortunately we cannot have him full time at home, if they force this on him he will end up like this poor girl and others. It’s just so disgusting they’re setting him and others like him up to fail.

They are literally locked behind a door, it’s a secure unit with big intimidating high fences like u get in a prison. If they show “challenging behaviour “ they are restrained and sedated.
This inflammatory report misses out a lot of the processes involved in long-term care. It's not just one signature on a paper and you're serving a life sentence. There is more input from other services other than just the NHS, ie social care services, the Courts and the councils. Is the person vulnerable to exploitation financially, sexually or emotionally? Do they have the understanding to make decisions for their own welfare? Do they have a safe place to go to? AIs the person a risk to themselves or others. How many times have you read in the newspaper of some person with a learning disability being subjected to violent abuse, murdered or exploited, ie Lacey Fletcher left to die by her parents. Life in reality is more involved than just opening the door and pushing vulnerable people out.
Could they be let into the community? People who are the most vulnerable, particularly adults, can pose a risk to themselves but also others. Yes I understand it’s bad to be hospitalised but I don’t believe the women saying “more often than not” … that lady they have in the crash pad seems okay but there are others who would be nowhere near that level of functionality. That’s why she got out. If those families can’t manage them then it’s wrong to release them into the community. End of story.
But if the right supports were put in place they could manage, these people are not stuck in there because they have committed crime’s it’s simply that they have a learning disability.
