2021 Norco Sight A2 27.5 Review

  • I’ve had a good week to test this bike and find a setup that performs where I want it to perform. At first the bike was sluggish on climbs and not compliant, and descending wasn’t confident. I addressed the compliance by lowering the air pressure and speeding the HSR up to 3 from full open from 2 from closed of 8 and a half clicks, adding HSC from open to 4 clicks in from open, and LSC I always ended back at 3 in from open. Lsr is at 10 out from closed of 18. 11 out in cooler weather, and hsr 2 from full open in colder weather. This setup it at 29 degrees celcius. Temperature has an effect on the oil viscocity in the damper making your settings feel off if you’re running a cold weather setup on a warmer day or vice versa.

This debate about 27.5 vs 29 is always in my head. I'm short at 170cm and currently run 27.5 Commencal Clash 2020 Medium. Tried 29 hardtail Commencal Meta HT, I did liked the bigger wheels especially on the front, but it was so hard to put the bike where I want, especially corners, no control for the back wheel in the corners, couldn't move it from it's own direction. Was thinking mullet, but that is additional investment. I actually borrowed 29 fork and wheel from a buddy and was blown away how faster the bike felt, however went back to 27.5 and compared strava times mullet vs full 27.5 and actually was faster with both 27.5, but in my head I thought mullet will be faster :D I think I will stick with 27.5 on both ends for a while. In the area where I like we don't have many straight highways down anyways:)

I'm 190cm, and still think that 27.5" wheels are awesome. The connection to the ground is just different compared to 29. My current bike happens to be a 29er, which I love and it definitely suits me, however, I'd happily run 27.5 or the "mullet" setup on a future bike.

I noticed they use a threaded bb on the alloy frames and press fit on the carbon. Another reason to go alloy!

The A3 for over a thou cheaper is even better value. Comes with a full Deore group set instead of SLX and Rockshox instead of FOX. I am a FOX guy but.
I personally can’t tell the difference between Deore, SLX and XT in performance🤷🏽‍♂️.
With the cash saving I upgraded the Yari fork charger damper to RC2 same as Lyrik Ultimate for $400.
Threw the Deluxe shock in the bin and bought a 2023” Super Deluxe coil $800 Insane upgrade over the junk installed.
What’s with these companies that provide these suspension components that have no compression adjustment whatsoever, isn’t it 2022, I digress.
And only because I had trouble getting used to the funky levers on the Deore master cylinder, I bought a set SLX master cylinder levers only $140 (in stock), and mated them up to the Deore 4 piston callipers. Now these thing feel and work insane.
New bars, grips, pedals to my personal choice, less than $1600 in upgrades.
I’m sure you’d agree, this is all the performance anyone would need without any of the bling. And as I break the not so good stuff I’ll replace it.
But as a whole this would have to be the best bang for buck bike on the market.
    Yes it’s also 27.5 too!

I agree about 275 wheels for Enduro style riding. It helps for maneuvering. 29 seems better for XC. Also agree about riding bikes with smaller reach. Shorter reach with a slack HA seems like a recipe for a bike that gives confidence on steep terrain but isn't too cumbersome to lean over

Its lovely having a low backend with room to squat into the pedals, and that low wheel centre seems to keep the bike agile

hey mate! with the suspension setup, does "from full open" mean from full clockwise?

Full open is least damping, or full counter clockwise

Another great video Telly. Do you feel like the new X2's in general need to be ran deeper into it's sag or perhaps only on Norco due to its leverage curve? I have a new Specialized Kenevo SL and I too feel like the rear keeps getting hung up no matter what I do. Another thing of note on the X2 is the poor placement of the HSR dial, stupid
Keep coming back to all of your videos for recommendations, but perhaps a more in depth suspension tuning video is in order Telly. A question I always ask, but nobody ever answers is where to set the HSR at the onset when dialing in the LSR. I feel like it absolutely effects the LSR circuit, but it is hard to feel for it
Keep up the great work and looking forward to more content! Cheers mate

Nah the sag height for this bike is related to the geometry and suspension design mostly, and partly because of how progressive the short stroke X2s are. The longer stroke X2 has a larger positive air can which better matches the size of the neg for the best tuning range on different bikes.

Setting hsr/lsr at the start is a matter of bouncing around on the street or driveway and going through the range of both adjusters to see where the functional range is, and get a feel for how they affect each other, then start where you feel it may be good. These adjustments are also directly related to the spring rate you’re running. Too fast hsr will have the back end dancing around with the only effective control being slow lsr. If you run the hsr too slow you’ll lose grip and it’ll feel like you get no energy back when you pump backsides. Not remedied by a faster lsr. You want enough force coming out of the spring to create grip and to propel you forward off backsides, but not so much force that its pushing your feet up through bumps and skipping around.
If hsr is too fast you have to run a dead setup, is hsr is too slow you have to compromise with lsr makingvfor an unstable bike oscillating through the travel constantly

I just threw a marzocchi bomber cr coil on my sight a month ago (got lucky with stock). Feels so much better than the dpx2 that came stock. In my opinion, the air shock felt too choppy. I tried playing around with air pressure and rebound but it just felt like riding a wild bull.

    • @mtbtelly5522
      @mtbtelly5522  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I’d say if you want a longish bike you could get on well with the medium, if you want something a little more compact and playful you’d enjoy the small as well. Kind of between the sizes, personally with this bike having a nice low seat tube I’d lean medium, but again you’ll get along with both sizes

Well mate thanks so much for getting on a a2 sight! Really interesting for me to see what you found with it.
    I love my 29er but I’m also 182cm tall.
I’m actually really really surprised how close you are to my settings.
(That I got from the ride aligned) for 84kg medium speed.
Clearly your much faster if your needing those setting at only 76kg.
I’m rocking Air Pressure of 79 psi and 1 Token
    Comp knob at 1:00 🕐
    Rebound: 7 out
    In the fork.
and I’ve been running 17mm of sag and Air Pressure of 250psi (if I remember right)
    Air Volume: 0 VS
    LSR: 11 out
    HSR: 5 out
    LSC: 13 out
    HSC: 5 out
Sometimes 4 clicks of HSC if I need it.
And 4 clicks or HSR if it’s over 25’c
What rebound are you on for the fork??
And what LS rebound are you on for the rear shock. Also what air pressure did you end up needing for 19mm sag 76kg.
    Interested to know.

    • @chadsugden411
      @chadsugden411 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Would you still run that much sag on the 29er as I know the Geo is slightly different. I think it’s about 8-10mm lower BB.

    • @mtbtelly5522

How does that feel? At 2 tokens the front was a little too low, having to run a little more sag to keep the chop out of the rampier spring. 1 token was good, and would probably be my preferred for some bottomout insurance. At no token I could bottom it on a huck no worries but Everywhere else was excellent. Add a token to give you that insurance but it starts to deteriorate the compliance a little.
I’d imagine 5 would have you near 30% sag?
