    By rule the timeout is to be granted whether they have any or not, at the expenses of a technical foul. Coach is an idiot. Official did what he was supposed to do.

      By rule timeouts are requested and granted. I am ignoring the timeout call as an official. Just like I do when a coach is down 20 and tries to call timeout with 5 seconds left. I’m not giving him the timeout and game is over. Officiating is more than black and white. There’s a lot of gray. And good officials know how to call in the gray.

    I think people look at the TIME OUTs backwards when it comes to the rules. I say this because you are NEVER really OUT of Time Outs in Basketball.
    Look at it another way.
    You have X amount of FREE Time Outs. After you have used all of those FREE Time Outs you may then PURCHASE a Time Out at the cost of a Technical Foul.
    You will not find it written this way in the Rules. But in effect this is what happens.
    Some may think that is crazy but it isn't. What if your team was up 10 or 20 points late in the game. You have used all of your FREE Time Outs.
    Your team is GASSED. They just cannot go anymore. But you CAN still get a TIme Out if you need it.
    If you call a Time Out you did not have after suffering the penalty of a Technical Foul you will still receive the Time Out.
    If a 1 minute break or maybe just a chance to sub in fresh players is the difference between maintaining the Lead you have and losing you would gladly BUY that Time Out.
    And if you have been behaving like an Adult all night and did every detail of you job right what is 1 Technical Foul to you.
    Nothing really. It's just 2 Free Throws and 1 Possession.
    And if you ask for the Time Out during a Dead Ball before the opponent takes Possession it doesn't really even cost the Possession.
    It was going to be their Ball anyway before you paid for the Time Out.

    • @detroitrockcity8
      @detroitrockcity8 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Jeremy Holmes not necessarily. With the Technical, by rule, white team retains possession at half court. Black WOULD have had a chance to foul quickly or steal the inbound for a chance to win/tie with 1.5 seconds left. I would start by saying the Coaching staff is responsible for notifying their players after the last one used or if they did, it’s the player’s fault for not always knowing “time and score” situations. Either way, the HC sealed their fate by taking the double T and ejection. You can read his lips “How can you call that,” but as an official, when a player is that adamant about calling a timeout, we have to grant it per request. If we could (and to clarify we are NOT able to do this) we would prefer to just ignore the request and let play go on since we as a crew, would know they have none. However, until that day, it will always be the “Chris Webber” situation. Tough way to go out for sure.

    I remember watching this on the Baller Visions channel. If I remember correctly, this playoff game was played as a true home game because of a scramble for a neutral venue that could handle the crowd that would show up. That's why the seats are packed tighter than sardines and there are dozens of people standing. I say all that only to comment that it's a wonder that in this tough-and-tight postseason game between rivals the crowd was passionate but knew its boundaries. Some of the visiting team's fans may have been tempted to become unhinged like their coach but thanks be to God they didn't. It could have been really ugly. All it would have taken to keep this situation from happening was for the visiting team's coach to have told his team right before the home team's free throws with 1.9 seconds left, "We have NO TIMEOUTS remaining."

    This is all on the Foothills Coach for a) not telling his team they hav no timeouts left and b) if he did tell his team and the kid who called the timeout made a mistake, then as a Coach you hav to accept that your kid made a mistake and not make it worse by being a little crybaby and getting on the official for doing his job!!!! That Coach was looking to blame the ref for a mistake made by him or one of his kids, so IMO that tells a lot about a persons identity and maturity level, that coach is just a big egotistical crybaby and was a very bad role model in this situation. He is teaching his kids the wrong way and will probably keep blaming the refs for losing the game and his kids will NOT learn the proper lesson from this…….. Teaching point. By rule the officials had no choice and granted the time out. Handling the coach: The other 2 officials must keep the coach away from the calling official. Much like MLB, the other umpires stay between the coach and the umpire when possible. The coach should have been given another "T" when he was in the middle of the court. By him going all the way across the court, could have gotten the fans more involved. Another point is where was the Principal? He or she is in charge of their school and if this is a playoff game, I am sure they were there. It is their job to keep order with their staff and students. The coach should have been intercepted before he crossed the court by the Principal. These videos help all of us when faced with tough situations. We look at them as a way to learn.

Forgive me, as I don't know the official procedures, but where are the other two officials as the coach is backing away from the confrontation until he has his back to the stands/fans (who could be parents that are just as hot as the coach?) Shouldn't at least one of them been in between the two to attempt to defuse the situation and protect his fellow official?

      I am personally not happy with how the officials worked together on this, but I also feel that there is nothing to diffuse. The coach made a decision to be a jerk and got ejected as a result. The team in black can request a timeout and it was heads up by the team to call one and the officials to properly grant one. The coach should know this and should have kept his cool. If I had called the first T, I am not backing up anywhere. He is going to earn that and if the coach comes out during a timeout, he will get a chance to go back, but he choose not to. He had to go and he was sent away.

      He probably was contending that the player did not call for a timeout. Then he probably contended that the officials should not have granted an actual request. There are officials that will try to suggest if you know they are out of timeouts, do not grant a request. I do not agree with that thinking, but I know it is out there. First order of business: As I recall the rule, the TO is granted, but at the cost of a T.
    T on the coach should've been called the moment he went on the floor to challenge the ref.
    At the third technical, forfeiture should've been considered, because he was given a LOT of leeway, especially given the game situation.
    For what it's worth, when the camera pans over, there should've been a technical for unsportsmanlike on the other team's player for the "crazy" reaction.

    I just came across this video. I am a long time volleyball official and only did basketball for two years because of coaches like this one. That being said, I would have had one question for the official. Did he know that they had no timeouts remaining? If he did, preventative officiating says you ignore the timeout request and move on to overtime. If he wasn't aware, then he had no alternative.

    • @OfficiatingBornVideos
      @OfficiatingBornVideos  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I do not think it matters if he was aware. The team has to be aware. The players need to be aware. If the official ignores the timeout and that team wins, we might have another video of how the officials ignored an obvious request for a timeout and cost the other team the game. So it is incumbent on the teams to know their timeout situation and not put themselves or the officials in a position to call one on their behalf. Especially in an adamant way this player made that request.

      It would not be fair to the other team for the officials to simply ignore the timeout request, knowing that there were none left. This places the burden on the other team to know the timeout count and read the officials mind.
      In this scenario, timeout is called but no timeouts remain. The officials know the count and ignore the request. The other team does not and seeing the timeout request let up on defense. The team on offense then has an easier path to the basket. It is not fair to place the burden on the other team to respond to a mistake made by your team.
