I was in high school in NY when this film came out. after 9/11 it was the perfect film at the perfect time. An over the top hero who saves NY and makes everyone feel better. I saw it 6 times at the theatre with friends. It meant so much to us at the time.
It still means a lot... even now that we know so much more about 9/11
I saw this movie for the first time when there was huge promotion of SM3. I was 8 years old, fell in love with Tobey Maguire and had my sexual awakening not just with the alley kiss but Willem Dafoe. It was at that moment I knew my prefence to love.

I disagree. I think William Defoe NAILED Green Goblin. He was the Green Goblin I know from the comics. I think Rami's Goblin matches the comics and the 1990's animated series quite well.

I think the updated suit gets the job done. The expressive and creepy realistic mask seems like a better choice but I really don't think the purple and green tunic and tights look would translate well. The metallic green with shades of purple homage it well enough.
I'd argue that the Raimi Green Goblin actually hit all the essential and best aspects of the comics Green Goblin. They retold the story of Norman finding out that Peter was Spider-man (which was always a fact that made him the biggest foe), he was Harry's father, and he was willing to go for targeting Peter's loved ones. They just had all that happen in quicker succession. His death was written into the comics because writers didn't know how to deal with him knowing Peter's dual identity, he kept getting amnesia and being docile and then recovering his memories (conversely, Gwen died in the same storyline because she and Peter's romance was heading down a path where engagement/marriage would naturally happen; and the writers weren't ready for that).
Here his death put Harry's story into motion which is why it happened in the first movie. I think Norman dying was more necessary for the fact that he knew Peter's identity, than Otto's in part 2. Admittedly, I don't think Otto's characterization in the Raimi sequel would ever have reason to stay a criminal (Otto was a good man, but had his mind screwed up through pain and humbris); but his redemption didn't have to equal death... with Norman the guy had to die because he was dangerous and wouldn't stop trying to kill Peter and his loved ones.
Nobody mentions that in most of the scenes in Osborn’s house, there is a collection of weird and bizarre masks in the background, implying Norman is a fan of that stuff, and that’s where the idea of the goblin mask comes from. What I like about the Green Goblin costume in this movie is that they tried to give it an explanation, (like Peter creating his custom for pro wrestling). The suit is the pilot suit for the glider and the helmet is the result of Norman liking for those weird masks.
Exactly, he even thinks at first his masks are talking to him. In one scene the prototype suit and glider are being tested at Oscorp and the mask isn’t used. So probably a creation of his own.
Yes! I don't know why people think the mask was supposed to be part of the suit Oscorp were developing. He may have taken parts and created it from something else, but when the glider is being shown test-flown it doesn't have that integrated helmet/mask. He added that later.

They put a lot of faith in the audience to work that out themselves by watching him with his masks. Unfortunately a lot of people need stuff spelt out for them or they act like it is incomprehensible. It is like having a picture of an apple and a missing word and then they can't tell you what the missing word is....... it is bloody obvious!

Me neither. I mean, if you're gonna complain about the suit, but have no negative feelings toward a guy getting out a straight up Halloween costume and throwing that on. I like them both, but don't see the hate there.

JJJ IN THE MCU .....FINALLY!
Born in 1996, this will always be my definite version of Spiderman in a movie (although I liked Tom Holland in Civil War). Also, I like the Green Goblin suit, despite not looking at all like in the comics. The Green goblin in Amzing Spiderman 2 looks so much worse.
This is best Spider man movie after watching 3 different incarnations, this movie had soul and emotion. They complained always that Toby was to old but Tom Holland they slowly turn him into a tiny beta gay man in 2019.
I was born in 1996. However I was introduced to Spider-Man from the cartoon released in the 1990s. It was the Spider-Man Ultimate Villain Showdown VHS tape.
Glad you appreciate the classics, kid. I was born in the 80s. So I grew up off He-Man; BraveStaar; Original Voltron; Original ThunderCats; Gummi Bears; Care Bears; Conan the Barbarian; Original TMNT; SPIDER-MAN and his Friends all in the 80s and thats off top of my head.
Then the early 90s began with Batman TAS; X-MEN TAS; SPIDER-MAN TAS; Gargoyles;Fantastic Four; Iron Man series. 80s & 90s were awesome times to be a kid. As a young adult, i really liked Young Justice, Wolverine & The XMen and Avengers: Earth Mightiest Heroes.
Oh yes how can I forget Justice League and JLU AND *DRAGON BALL Z OCEAN DUB!*

I had the opportunity to meet Cliff Robertson when he came to eat at the restaurant where I worked in Yellow Springs, Ohio. He was an incredibly nice and polite man, but it was scary how frail he looked. This was back in 2008. He had two people helping him walk and he had to sit down immediately. His eyes were watery and when I shook his hand, it was very weak. I don't mean this to disparage the guy, he was fantastic and one of the nicest guys I ever met. It just made me sad that day to see Uncle Ben dying. :-(

Hang on, what? The goblin was pretty much spot on. It was always going to be tricky to put him on screen, and they nailed it. The look and dialogue for him is absolutely spot on and in keeping with the tone of the movie. This is perhaps the only series where you really can take the comic book and largely put it on screen with minor adjustments (like the first two X-Men films).
The suit just looks like an armoured suit. It's the altered helmet that makes the costume, and the sinister way the eyepieces slide back is really well done. They had to find a way to portray him well onscreen and the split personality really works, especially when Osborn is actually against any more murder or destruction, but the Goblin urges him on to more. The super-serum is just a way to trigger the personality change and make him strong enough to be a genuine threat to Spider-Man, the only person strong enough to actually fight him.

This was one of the best movie experiences of my youth. Cut the last few periods of school to go with my best friend, and while waiting in line actually ended up seeing one of the teachers from my school! I wasn't even a Spider-Man fan, but I absolutely loved the movie. I remember being really freaked out by Dafoe when he would do the dual personality thing.
This movie will always hold a special place in my heart, along with the 2nd one of course
This movie to me is what Superman: The Movie is to you. I fell in love with it the moment I first saw it as a kid. It changed my life and kick started my love for the character and superheroes in general. It's easily one of my favorite movies to this day and thank you for reviewing it. On a side note, what copy of the movie did you use for the clips in this review?

Thank you for another heartfelt retrospective Oliver! Tom Holland may have been a perfect Spidey in Civil War, but to me Tobey Maguire is Spider-Man as Christopher Reeve is Superman or Michael Keaton is Batman. His role as Spider-Man is simply too iconic, career-defining, and genre-boosting to be shunned or forgotten and will remain in a lot of fans' hearts as the original and definitive cinematic take on one of the most beloved comic book superheroes. I know I do.
One problem I have with all the actors of Spider-Man after Maguire is that they don‘t look nerdy enough. They look way too good. Tobey nailed this perfectly, he made me believe that he was one of the biggest loosers in High School.

It was my first day at a new job in the heart of Times Square, and they let us all leave early after getting a tour of the office so I walked down 42nd street to the big AMC multiplex. There was a camera crew interviewing folks like me who were buying tickets on opening day, so I got on the local news for watching Spiderman! I tell ya, It was clear that there was a new era of super hero movies coming. This thing was huge. Great review, good meaty analysis.

With all the similarities between the Sam Raimi trilogy and the Christopher Reeve Superman films, maybe its a good thing there was never a 'Spider-Man 4' otherwise Spidey would have had to face his version of Nuclear Man! :P

I, for one, absolutely love Chad Kroeger's "Hero."
Blade (1998), X-Men (2000), and Spider-Man (2002) are three movies that put Marvel on the road to success. Also, 17 years later this adaptation of Spider-Man is still a great and extremely entertaining movie. Finally, I absolutely loved playing the video game adaptation of Spider-Man on the GameCube, it was just a fun game all around.
I fucking love Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy,they are strong contenders for my favourite comic book films.They adapt the characters so well,have so much emotion in them whilst at the same time maintaining the goofy elements of the original comics,amazing action sequences,soaring music,great visual design and top notch acting.I will admit that Spider-Man 3 got a little indulgent and excessive but I still think it’s a good film nonetheless.The first two films are perfection,the fucking blueprint on how to do a good comic book adaptation.
Fun fact, in the Spider-Man 2 novelization, during Peter's awkward encounter with the man in the elevator, Peter's inner monologue actually reveals that one one Bonesaw's opponents was so grateful to Peter for what he did to Bonesaw that he had his costume guy craft Peter's costume, answering the very serious question of where Peter got his suit from.

You are exactly right with Spiderman being the first cinematic superhero experience like Superman and Batman. I've heard so many people in their 30s talk about how Batman was the shit and I'm in my 20s so Spiderman for me was the shit. I was 9 when this movie came out and got into the theater with my father and my friend thanks to the new rating system and this movie was the shit. I was fucking 9 and hadn't been much to theaters, especially not "adult movies". I never knew Superhero movies could be like this, I always thought Spiderman would be like the 70s show that I watched. This movie blow my fucking mind.

I love this movie so much that your retrospective has me in tears, there is no movie that has influenced me like this one. Whilst the second movie may technically be better, this one is my absolute favourite superhero movie. Ill ape what others have said, Im 24 so this came out when I was a socially awkward pre-teen and Spider-Man was the dude, he was what I wanted to be. I try to be as selfless as Spider-Man (yes i know he's a character duh) in my daily pursuits. Sorry for rambling

Man I wish I could meet Toby Maguire and tell him all the great things of what it was like watching him as Spider Man when I was a little kid I have this movie on VHS and I got Spider Man 2 on DVD and I would also love to talk to him about the upcoming new Spider Man movie Spider Man: Homecoming.
I loved this version of Spider-Man. It really felt like how I imagined a live-action Spider-Man film would be. Knock 3 all you like, it's a great trilogy and did NOT need to be 'rebooted'. That was perhaps the most pointless idea possible. Really annoyed that they seem bent on rebooting it AGAIN.
This film showed what getting the right actors, director and writers can do. The storyline, characters, villain and tone were all perfectly done, as was the sequel. The third film had too many villains but it was still a great part of the overall story. The Raimi films just feel exactly like the comics, exactly how the source material should've been interpreted. It's almost completely faithful to everything that makes Spider-Man so good.
I also love the music of this series, some of my favourite film music.
Amazing Spider-Man has nothing memorable about the music...I can't remember anything from the scores of either film. The scores for the original films were much better.
It may well be a good soundtrack, but the movie it's attached to was so poor I wish I could remember much about it. Amazing Spider-Man was just utterly unnecessary, they only did it to hold onto rights once it became clear Raimi wasn't doing another one. Even Homecoming makes the weird choice of making him beholden to Iron Man of all people. Spider-Man is such a strong character with such strong villains he doesn't need to be among the Avengers, he needs his own stand-alone films and villains, as they already did.
I agree that it shouldn't have rebooted with Amazing I didn't bother to watch them. Spider-Man 4 could have been the death of Spider-Man/Kraven the Hunter story line and introduce the black cat as a love rival for MJ. That would have been awesome! Tom Holland's ok but I don't like starting again in high school and the iron spider like AI suit.
I like both the versions. I don't like MCU version tho... fking childish and stupid!

This is probably one of the last classic superhero movies. It feels a lot like a classic Superman movie (which I think was done intentionally, not sure, but relatively so). I like the editing styles that look a lot like classic comic book panels. It has this very classic comic book style, come to think of it. With lots of bright primary colours, stylised credits, cheesy and simple yet epic storylines and a masterful villain. Nowadays, a lot of superhero movies, if they aren’t dark and gritty, don’t really carry this same style and go for a more conventional look. While I don’t mind that, I do love a movie that goes all the way in being a comic book. It reminds of some great classics like Superman (1978), Batman (1989) and even Batman (1966), some of my favourite stories. Even the cheesy dialogue, I think it knows that it’s cheesy and stupid (again, not unlike Superman ‘78, Batman ‘66) and it’s having fun.
This movie brings back good memories for me. I was six when this came out and that's when I became a marvels movie fan.
I'm gonna have to disagree on the music. Danny Elfman's score >>>>>>>>> James Horner's score for The Amazing Spider-Man. It has strong themes, whilst I can't remember anything from Horner's. I think you're obviously influenced since you listen to Elfman's older stuff and hear re hash, but for me, Elfman's score by itself is incredible. And I also disagree that Christopher Young's contributions were good... compared to Elfman's, it sounded amateurish.
So true...can't remember a single thing about the Amazing Spider Man scores. The original film scores were so much better and really capture the essence of the character.
I can vaguely remember the main Spider-Man theme from the amazing Spider-Man 2, it’s good but when ever I try to remember it, I get it mixed up with the avengers theme lol, but the original trilogy score 100%, so iconic
I love the "accelerating" beat in the opening of Spiderman music, it's memorable; it's up there with the opening music of Mars Attack

The Guns Of Navarone from 1961. I recently tried to find out more about this film online and there's a bit of a derth. I recently watched the 50th anniversary blu-ray edition and even though I saw it before many years ago I was blown away by every aspect of the film. Just ripe for the Oliver treatment. Maybe someday...... ;) In the meantime, take care! :)

Great Review. Spider-Man is one of the best Superhero-Movies ever made and has with Willem Dafoe as Green Goblin one of the best Supervillians in movies. Incredible performance from him.
Willem Dafoe, one of the few people who can be scarier without a Goblin mask on vs. wearing it. Geez that dude is frightening.
I watched this movie constantly on my old Dolby DVD player from when I was 2 to when I was 11. The spider bite fever scene scared the living shit out of me and so did Willam DeFoe. My favorite part was always when Peter started climbing the wall in the alley. I was blown away. Very underrated movie.
Finally a review about the first ever Marvel film I have watched Spider-Man 2002 version.
It gets a lot of derision these days but this was a solid attempt at a Spiderman flick. In all honesty Spiderman is a really difficult character to put to screen, especially in the 2000s with its emphasis on grittier films. Spiderman has always put mature ideas into its stories but there's always been a thread of optimism which is hard to incorporate successfully and be taken seriously, but I think Raimi managed it pretty well.
Overall a solid effort and kept the momentum rolling pretty well on the modern comic film.
The new civil war version is great, but sadly they went overboard with the CG in my opinion, I miss the days of practical stuntwork, Like the masterfully directed action in all 3 Ramie films, I mean to me the new one in civil war just doesn't feel like he was there when they were even filming the airport battle, but that's just my opinion,
Oh boy did things get so much better over the past 5 years. So happy we saw the 3 Spider-Men working together in the newest film.
Oliver, you've got the best reviews out there with the editing, narration, and in depth knowledge about the movie. I don't think anyone else out there is doing what you're doing to the quality that you are. Keep up with the good work! You deserve way more viewers!

You hit the nail on the head with the "first trip to the cinema being Spider-man" bit. The first movie I ever saw was Spider-Man at the Fort Union Drive-In theater in Las Vegas, New Mexico. It was a double feature with Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, and we went for a late birthday present cause I'd just turned 7 years old, and I remember being so amazed by Spider-Man. Everything about that movie was so amazing to me, and I still have so much nostalgia for a movie, despite it feeling a bit dated now. I especially remember that part where the Goblin's bombs make people turn into spooky skeletons making me a bit uneasy as a child. God do I miss that drive-in theater since i've moved away.
THE CASTING IN THIS FILM IS CRAZY GOOD. PERFECTION!
I remember when i was 8 years old and this movie came out, I was home from school due to being sick, and my mom rented this movie for me! Spider-man was, and still is, my favorite super hero, so it was a real blast for me and I can still relive the same feelings that I had when I watched this movie as a child. I think that this movie is great, Spider-man 2 is also very good - can't say the same about 3 though. Great review!

This retrospective on Spider-Man was epic, yet beautiful and glorious. And to accomidate the 15th Anniversary of Raimi's original and the upcoming release of Spider-Man Homecoming, I'm going to do retrospectives on all 5 movies leading to Homecoming's release. Not to mention May 4, 2017 will mark the 10th anniversary of Spider-Man 3 (2007).

Can't wait for the Spider-Man 2 review - that and X-Men: Days of Future Past have to be my favorite super hero movies.
What I really loved about the Raimi Spider-Man movies, are the dialogues during the quieter moments. I rewatch these movies for the Peter and MJ talking moments, the Uncle Ben and Aunt May talking moments, because those really give those movies heart and power. And that Danny Elfman score is so great and timeless. One of my favorite scenes of dialogue is when Peter talks to MJ in the hospital and later MJ says to Peter, that Peter was the one who made her feel more than she ever thought she could be. These are dialogues which have weight and emotion that some of the more modern superhero movies do not have.

I don't comment on your videos much anymore but I had to say the amount of work you do is just amazing, this video was utterly interesting, you really do put a fresh perspective on the film and the amount of information you give is great. Loved it.
this is the most important movie in my life for me because it was A: the movie that introduced me to Spiderman and B: it was the first movie i ever watched and 15 years later i'm studying filmmaking.
I was obsessed with this movie when it came out. So much that I saw it in cinemas SIX times 😂
I personally like this one better than 2, though I do have to admit 2 is the better movie.

I still like this movie. I loved it as a kid and I think the movie came out at a perfect time after the 9/11 catastrophe people were still trying to cope with (despite the teaser trailer that was pulled off from theaters prior to the accident). It's an entertaining, upbeat and cheesy movie that people at the time needed. It's like the first Star Wars movie that came out in theaters during the depressing era of the 70's. I also like how Sam Raimi implemented old-school filmmaking methods with the camera that add a more genuinely appealing look to the movie. It's corny in some places, but I prefer it better than depressing and modern take of TASM movies.
Watched this movie so many times in a row at the theater. His first successful corner while swinging gave me goosebumps!

I know the role of a movie fanatic or critic is to not only share their love for the genre but to introduce others to experience they've might have yet to had if not had already, I stopped watching movies years ago although the memories I have for certain movies good or bad are still as strong as ever, if anything even though you might advise people to watch these movies to be honest, to encapsulate passion and a movies running time in these delicious chunks to deliver something just as captivating and of a high quality should be recognised, these retrospectives are a joy to watch, you're passion for this medium can be seen through every frame and every word spoken, always a pleasure to watch and always look forward to see what you do next.
Awesome review as always Oliver! For me this is the first movie I saw at 12am, ( I was 12 at the time). I remember my dad trying to get movie tickets and all they had left were midnight screenings, it was such a cool experience and the theater was packed and everyone was hyped to see this. It was also in IMAX so this movies visual effects just blew my mind...for sure this was an epic blockbuster that gave me a lot of happy memories from my childhood and being a fan of the 90s cartoon this gave me even more admiration for the character of SpiderMan.

I loved the first Spider-Man movie. As a 10 year old kid, I was already a Spider-Man fan after watching the 90s animated cartoon. (which was sadly cancelled) and was really anticipated to see this movie after watching the first teaser trailer before 9/11. Looking back at the movie itself, it is a bit cheesy for modern audiences to take seriously, but back in 2002, this was one of the coolest comic book movies to watch on the big screen. Almost every kid in my class thought it was one of the coolest movies and became a Spidey fan after seeing it.

Dunst is and will always be to me the quintessential 'girl next door' even if she did look and act about 5 years older than her male colleagues most of the itme. I can forgive her that. This movie is terrific.

I was Senior in High school when this movie came out. Man i remebered how huge of a deal this movie was when it came out. It was the first Spider Man to hit theatres.
Loved this movie but it was a bit hard to suspend disbelief that Mary Jane couldn't recognize Peter's voice under the mask. He spoke exactly the same way.

You didn't mention the first animated Spider-Man TV series from the 1960's, produced by Ralph Bakshi -- yes, the Fritz the Cat, etc. animator... The animation was quite cheap, but the stories were very loyal to the comic book, and the voice talent was good. Almost everyone has at least heard the iconic opening theme song.... I don't know if it ever aired in Great Britain...? I saw the early re-runs of the series as a kid, and that's what actually first turned me on to Spidey. I always greatly enjoy your Retrospectives!
I've said it before and I'll say it again; If it weren't for Tobey McGuire, Hugh Jackman and Robert Downey Jr - the Marvel movie industry would be bankrupt.
But Guards of Galaxy, Winter Soldier, Deadpool and The Avengers were a breath of fresh air.
Maguire brilliantly captures Parker's exuberance as he begins to recognize and utilize his life-altering new abilities. That, and JK Simmons' JJ Jamieson made Spiderman a great and memorable superhero movie years before Iron Man.
Casting J.K. Simmons as Jameson was about as perfect as perfect can get. In fact I think that the reason Jameson's character didn't make an appearance in the Garfield films was due to the fact that Simmons was such an impossible act to follow that they didn't dare try. A wise decision in my opinion.
