  • Barkey takes you on a tour of the three movie versions of Russell Thorndike's adventure novel "Dr. Syn: The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh", a book he published in 1915. Each film puts its' own spin on this tale of piracy and revenge, and all cast Syn as a sort of Robin Hood figure fighting for justice. Both Hammer Studios and Walt Disney tried their luck with a version of the "Dr. Syn" story, in addition to a 1937 version from Britain.
Which version is best? Barkey weighs in!

Dr Syn was also a member of one version of the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

Patrick McGoohan's Scarecrow was awesome. Fond memories.

I remember watching Wonderful World of Color with Scarecrow, Daniel Boone The Swamp Fox, live action adventures. I also remember too many times when the films were Charlie the Lonesome Cougar or some other drival.

Swamp Fox and Daniel Boone are (sneakily) on YT, believe it or not, along with the Scarecrow. Swamp Fox is pretty low-res, though.

Sunday night with a pillow on the floor wearing Batman PJs. JIFFYPOP in a Captain Crunch bowl. Funny Face-Goofy Grape drink in a Flintstones glass. Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom then Disney's Wonderful World of Color, The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh. Oh, the memories.

I really enjoyed the version with Peter Cushing (I have the DVD for that one). Thanks, as always, Barkey!

The original Dr. Syn sounds like a murderous Dread Pirate Roberts. When he wants to retire, he doesn't groom a replacement, he just kills his crew.

Indeed. Seems like a lousy way to reward all of the crew's loyalty, right?

Patrick McGoohan went to the same group of chiropractors that I did in Southern California. Jonathan Winters went to them as well. These chiropractors performed a very specialized form of Chiropractry that did not include the standard joint manipulation techniques that most chiropractors employ. This form concentrated on aligning the first vertebrae in the spinal column with a plastic hammerlike device.

Captain Clegg or Night Creatures also has Micheal Ripper as Mipps, which might be one of his best Hammer roles

Great review. Glad to hear we like the same Scrooge movie - I watch that one more than any other. Of course, Michael Horden, who you mentioned earlier was also in that as the best Jacob Marley.

I’m surprised this Disney hasn’t rebooted this franchise.
The premise is perfect for a tv show.

Disney was only trying to ride on the fame of the " Batman " T.V. series.

I have all three films on DVD. I much prefer the oldest being the George Arliss film. Disney, having obtained the rights to the first, or should that be the last, book, prevented much of the use of the book for the Hammer film. However because there was already a film (the George Arliss one) Hammer were allowed to basically make a new version of that film so long as they didn’t use the name Doctor Syn. Both the Hammer Film and the Disney film have their good areas I still prefer the George Arliss film.

I remember reading Beware The Scarecrow comics in Disney Adventure Magazines. Maybe instead of making (ruining) Star Wars and Marvel, they could make a series of this guy for a young male demographic. Then again, since this is modern Disney, they'll (in the words of South Park) put a chick in it, and make her lame and gay.

Yes, a girlboss Scarecrow fighting the oppressive patriarchy whilst having it off with a lady Mipps would probably be the end result. Best if they just leave it!
