- One of the most sought-after bird species in Africa is the Shoebill, a large prehistoric-looking bird, only occurring in remote papyrus swamps. Mabamba swamp, located along the lake Victoria not far from Entebbe, is one of the most reliable places for Shoebill spotting in Uganda.

It’s such an incredible bird. I hope they’re protected.
That music, when you see Shoebill. Like, you were already ecstatic to see other birds, but when you finally found shoebill, that soothing music, like you've found the world.
There is something unbearably ancient about that bird.

Mine too, they are so polite and mysterious, like something caught in a time warp. I hate to see them in captivity, unless they are injured.
I was feeling really sad about the Dodo being extinct but the Shoebill really fills the void a bit.
They have a really similar bill, both of them have a piercing tip to prevent fish from escaping. The gaze is totally different though. People said the dodo looked very clueless, while the shoebill looks menacing.

Wonderful!!! I did this exact trip myself a few weeks ago and saw all of the birds in this clip except the Fish Eagle. Got some amazing shots of a Shoebill (as we sat and watched it waiting to catch a fish for about 15 minutes).

The Shoebill lays 2 eggs. 1 is for a backup in case something happens to the first chick. They will stop feeding the weakest one, and it starves to death.
