@MrTruth7788 - totally agree, Eric's a stud actor......Star 80, Pope, Runaway Train, Final Analysis, The Specialist, Nature of the Beast etc. Never got it, never understood why his kid sis 'Julia Roberts' got so much 'juice' as an actress, meanwhile her entire career was spun around her 1 hit wonder, 'Pretty Woman'. Common knowledge that industry insiders have always given Eric mad respect. Howard Stern teasing told Eric he was prettier and more talented than most of the females that came on his show. Mickey Rourke during his acceptance speech for the 'Wrestler' gave Eric a special shout-out, telling the audience that Hollywood needs to get it's act together and put Eric back in the game again. Guess Hollywierd listened -since then, he's been in some kick-ass summer blockbusters......Dark Knight, Expendables etc. Love & Respect______mykey from toronto
Thanks for this! Eric Roberts is extremely underrated/overlooked. He’s just a great, great actor! Speaking of overlooked.. The Pope of Greenwich Village is underrated as hell. Classic film. And Mickey at his very best is probably the best ever.
That's what I tell my kids about the movie. Every Charles or Chuck I ever met I wanted to call Charliee. I would have named my son that, but it would have driven my wife insane.
He's underrated and overlooked because he has made astonishingly bad career choices over the past 25 years. He certainly got in his own way. You don't get a better start then he did. It's a shame he let it all slide.
I love Eric Roberts. He's so handsome and talented. I wish he had made a lot more movies. Someone needs to put this man in some movies and series! Let's not let a good man get away! ❤
I had the pleasure of meeting Eric Roberts 20 years ago at a hotel in Toronto. He was very friendly and gracious, particularly after telling him Pope is my favorite movie.
I know this video is a tribute to Mr. Robert’s, but Jon Voight’s performance as “Manny” in Runaway Train was absolutely epic. But back to Mr. Robert’s…….he was wonderful in Pope of Greenwich Village which was such a great film. Runaway Train is also wonderful,
Pope of Greenwich Village is an evergreen, an absolute classic. His portrayal of Paulie was brilliant on so many levels. The movie and that character are beloved in our family. "Tough like fuckin' shoe leather" is an oft quoted line in our circles. 😊
...the scene where Charlie comes outta the restaurant after getting fired for Paulie stealing.... is just pure acting & writing genius. & then there's Geraldine Page in the film... a tour de force performance...
@@miles44-c1h What makes it so incredible is how natural it all looks and sounds. They just WERE those guys. If you grew up in the NY area back then and were Italian, you knew guys exactly like that. We all knew a Charlie, a Paulie, even an Eddie Grant. It's all so very genuine. But, the restaurant...last time I was by there it was a Chase Bank. Those neighborhoods are all dead. All the real NY character was developed right the hell out of them. It's all bland millionaires and corporate chains, now. That NY doesn't exist much anymore. It's sad.
@@e.l.norton love it, E.L. -- so very well put. I can only imagine. The film's authenticity is what drew-in so deeply a 17 yr old kid fr Flagstaff, AZ -- that stick ball scene...I was just fascinated this world actually existed - I wanted to be in it. You're lucky to have lived in that incredible city before it became pukishly corporatized & gentrified. I'd of gotten my ass handed to me in the old NYC of the 70s & 80s.... lol. Great conversation with folks who know & love this film as thoroughly as I do!
@@miles44-c1h Stickball! 😂 Well, if you're ever in the city, that playground is still there and looks almost the same. It's at the corner of Houston and 6th Ave.There's a great pizza joint, Arturo's, about a 5-minute walk away on Houston. Treat yourself if you're ever there. All those filming locations are in close proximity from Worth Street up to the Village. It'd make for a cool afternoon. You could also hit the Ghostbusters firehouse at the same time. It's just a short walk from Eddie Grant's "Trucking Company".
Thank you for that interview. The Pope caused me to be a devoted fan of Eric and Mickey. And this is the first time that I have seen Eric in an interview. What a treat. Thanks again. I think the Pope had more quotable great lines (mostly all by Paulie) than any other movie. For sure that’s one of the reasons why we love it so much.
Thank you so much for this interview!! The Pope of Greenwich Village is one of my very favorite films - ever. Saw it in the theater as a teenager...needless to say, it made a huge impression! I think it's one of the most underrated films of the 80s... it's a gem from start to finish! Eric Roberts is such a great soul... this made my day! "...that f*ckin' twat robbed you?!" & the scene goes from there...a classic.
As a kid I endlessly imitated Paulie. I had him down. My family was out to dinner at Bennigan's one night and I started doing Paulie over my mozzarella sticks.. My parents are cracking up. I do the, "That twat robbed you?!" line, and my parents choked laughing. I had NO idea what that word meant. I was half-heartedly reprimanded though tears of laughter. My parents knew I didn't know what the word meant, so I wasn't in trouble. I then probed for why it was a bad word and my father just shook his head laughing, "Just don't say it, alright. Not til you're married." 😄
Runaway Train was the first DVD i ever purchased. Bought it in late 1997. What gets me is that almost nobody I meet has seen that film. Its almost as if the establishment wants certain movies to be kept under lock and key. I heard in a documentary that they didn't have a big enough budget to show the train smashing into the chemical plant, so the ending is just Mannie on top of the locomotive.
Eric Roberts in Star80 was the scariest character I ever saw. Until I saw this interview, I was unable to fully disconnect the real Eric from the psychopath. Great actor, great guy!
Eric Roberts was always cast as a deeply insecure and demonstrative man, much like Dennis Hopper --- and he mastered that role. I loved him in Runaway Train.
Pope of Greenwich Village is as close to a perfect motion picture as it gets. One of the truly great American pictures. Another that comes to mind is Rumble Fish.
People forget Rumble Fish. It's the best out of the SE Hinton novels. It's better than The Outsiders. Simply because or Mickey and the cinematography of the movie.
I was raised in NYC and I was stunned to see Roberts and Rourke perform as two Italian-ish characters to a Tee. I mean unbelievable.. Unreal talents. A lot of people dont realize this..
I grew up in NYC and I was 25 when this film came out and I knew guys like Charlie and Paulie. There have been many films about NYC and this is one of the most accurate I’ve ever seen about a time that was in NYC. This film screams for a sequel. I’d love to see where Charlie and Paulie 40 years later. They’re in Florida they have a restaurant but it’s in financial trouble. Paulie has the great idea to get financial help from mobsters which he previously mentioned to Charlie who tells him not to even consider it but Paulie being Paulie does it anyway. Charlie finally is able to establish a relationship with his son who’s played by Tom Hardy. Paulie also now has a son played by Cillian Murphy and by his actions drags Charlie and their two sons into the mayhem. I’m ready to write the screenplay as no one is doing one now!
Eric melts me!!! Watch him in the 80’s Nobody’s Fool. I seen it 100 times. lol but I love EVERYTHING HE IS IN!! The better looking Roberts. Best hair too. lol
Great insights. I remember going to see another movie in the 80s, walking into the theater, and seeing the poster for The Pope of Greenwich Village, and thinking, "What an unusual name for a movie. Maybe we should be seeing that one instead. Sounds interesting." Not sure when I finally got to see it, but eventually I did. He still sounds exactly like he did in that film. I guess it's time to see Runaway Train now. (By the way, while watching this, I was relieved to see he DOES have two thumbs.)

He's not kidding by scratching the cornea of the eye. I did that once in 1995 by accident having a wash. Boy it hurts and it got more painful. I had to go hospital have a patch on my eye 👁
Re the Russian director and Southern accent...most countries have a bunch of different ways of speaking...but although Russia the largest land mass in the world has many ethnic languages...when people speak Russian it is the same way from the Sea of Japan to the border of Finland.
Acting must really be in his blood, what are the odds both he and his sister Julia Roberts would become successful actors despite growing up totally separated?
I have to admit my fondness for Julia Roberts, (Eric,s sister) however after screening the film "Pope of Greenwich Village" I was overwhelmed by Roberts performance I mean he killed it the same as "King of the Gypsies". When it comes to acting chops Eric rules in the Roberts clan!😎
Yes. Pound for pound he is a better actor than Julia. He doesn't have a "Aren't I cute and precious?" schtick that he falls back on in scenes that are tough.
Eric and Mickey are magical together! Best movie ever!
Eric is one of the greats . Pope of Grenache was a gem.
We wholeheartedly agree!
Absolutely. What a classic.

Rourke and Roberts best on screen chemistry since Redford Newman…

I'm from Prince St and I remember watching him and Rourke film classic. "Cholllie, the Bed Bug took my dumbs!!!"
An argument can be made that Eric Roberts in "Star 80" is the greatest performance given in 100 years of film. SERIOUSLY
Pope is without a doubt the best performance of his career. One of my favorite all time film performances.
Absolutely agreed!
I’ve loved Eric forever. Pope is my favorite film🧡
Loved the chat!
Hugs from Brazil.
Really loved this interview, Eric is amazing. Would be a dream to interview him!
Thank you so much! It still stands as one of my favorite's that we've done.

Love Eric Roberts!
He’s right. They both killed it. I still think ER and Mickey were two of the best actors of the 80’s. Sean Penn, also.
Eric will always be under his sister julia roberts...but i like him better...very underrated...80s movies was his best...my opinion only.
Way better actor than Julia
Great actor
Eric is really good 👍 underated
Eric Roberts is a genius and I've known this since I first saw Pope of G V.
Runaway Train...❤
The seen in the room was the best in cinema history
To me 😊 His best film : " King of the GYPSIES" ! Along with the girl whom played His girlfriend , O'toole was it 😍
Eric is by far the best actor in the Roberts family. BTW-That is not an insult to Julia.
He brilliant in King the Gypsy’s
Another great movie of his is The Coca-Cola Kid.
