I’m a big proponent of - if you only see it once in 9 years, you want it and you can afford it - you acquire it.

I would have bought it for many reasons. Because it is hard to find, it is needed to finish the set & I would have probably got some great deals along the way building the set to more than make up for paying top price on the last card needed. From a collectors point of view you made the right choice!

This is how you can definitely justify it to yourself (your last point). It's swings and round-abouts.
Some might disagree with the logic, but I agree with you on it. You get some great deals, some good deals, and deals where you feel very hard done-by; they even out in the end. 👍

If it’s a card you don’t see very often or a deal that can’t be passed up you pretty much have to buy. That being said I have walked away from similar situations, but is was more of me being financially responsible then being cheap. Timing is also a real thing at times.

I had the same dilemma recently. I struggled over whether to get the card. They just don't come around in nice condition often. So I paid up for it. But now I'm happy to be getting the card any day now. It can be tough for sure. Nice cards you picked up and nice gift as well. Have a good week Mike. Thanks

Principles are principles…. but the last card of a set for a card that doesn’t come up too often… I would’ve done exactly what you did. We only live once and I doubt we’ll lose much sleep. Congratulations on getting that card

There's so many things to consider if u get to that kind of situation but if it's just ridiculous over comps or the person knows u want it bad so they jack the price up in those cases I wouldn't but ya every scenario is different glad u got your card all the best in the new year

I am willing to pay up (within reason) on cards that don't come around very often or cards I've been looking for forever. I've added many cards to my watchlist that I felt were a little too much only to have them bought by someone else within days or even hours. Just do it! :)

A few years ago, the last card I needed for a complete PSA 8 1964 set was a $15-$20 common that I had been after for awhile. I paid over $200 in an auction and celebrated for a week!

All I know is that I rarely regret the cards I buy…only the ones I don’t.

I'd have assessed the condition and rarity, whilst factoring in the price.
In your case, I'd have pulled the trigger on it.
The deals you have got over 2024 will make your decision easier to digest.
Congrats on some great new additions, and best wishes for 2025, Mike. 👍

That’s the thing about doing auto sets, parallel sets, short print sets, rainbows- we can be held hostage for certain cards 😅

I just went through the same thing with one of my “grail cards” the 65 Namath. I bought!

Just get it but at slight discount.
To me, there's nothing more annoying than getting a decline to a reasonable offer. Very strange a buyer wouldn't counter to a reasonable non low-ball offer.

Would definitely be interested in a Japanese card channel! I've been reading books on the history of Japanese baseball.

Buy it! You may not see that card for another 9 years. Even more so if it is a card that isn't that expensive.

  • @mnplumberman

It all depends on the amount, but I am willing to overpay on certain cards. If so and how much depends on many factors.
I paid $250 for a 1/1 SuperFractor even though I felt It was worth closer to $150-$200. I probably could have gotten it for cheaper, but wasn't willing to lose it over $50. Now if he wanted $500 for it I wouldn't have paid it, but they might have gotten me for $300 on an offer.
I'm doing a Rainbow and need the Clear /10. Only 3 are graded and haven't seen one in 4 years. So I expect to be overpaying for that if I ever see one.

Hey Mike... sometimes you have to just do it, especially with rare cards or in my most recent case, art that hasn't been made since the 1970s (rare from Japan)... as for the new channel from our friend...bring on the Japanese card channel! Sounds fantastic and quite promising. Have a great week.

My tendency? Don’t buy. I am hoping to get the entire PSA Set Registry card from the Mike Schmidt Basic Set run in a PSA 10. Of the 47 cards in that set the only ones I have other than PSA 10 are the base Topps cards from 1973-1979. There has been a 1979 PSA 10 on the Bay for a couple years now. The guy wants $3,500 for it. I think that’s crazy. I want it bad. Never see that card come up. So eventually, if I want it I might have to buy that one. But no. I’m not gonna do it. I’ll learn to be happy with what I got. But I’m always looking. 😊
