  • 🎼 TABS, SCALE MAPS + LESSONS 👉 / quistjam Here's a head bopping medium swing jazz practice backing track for improvising on a classic minor 2-5-1 progression - in the guitar-friendly key of E minor!
    Click here goo.gl/GD3K8s for more free 2-5-1 jam tracks :)
    Chord progression:
    II: F#min7b5 I B7 I Emin7 I Emin7 :II
    Scale suggestions:
    E minor scale - E F# G A B C D (E)
    (F#min7b5 chords and Emin7 chords)
    E harmonic minor scale - E F# G A B C D# (E)
    (B7 chords)
    Basic arpeggios:
    F#min7b5 arpeggio = F# A C E
    B7 arpeggio = B D# F# A
    Em7 arpeggio = E G B D
    Next up, try out some more advanced colours on the dominant chord (B7) by treating it as an altered chord and using the altered scale:
    B altered scale - B C D Eb F G A (B)
    The altered scale is the mode which starts on the 7th step of the melodic minor scale, so in other words - the notes of B altered scale are the same as those of C melodic minor scale :)

    Recently learned some minor scale ladder drills on my key of D Diatonic harmonica and they seem to plug straight into this! Quist, making scale jail sound great again!

    As a thrash metal guitarist, it seems odd that this is fun to solo over, but it really is enjoyable. Thanks

    • @suckmydicproductions7162
      @suckmydicproductions7162 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      a lot of thrash solos are written in harmonic minor and harmonic minor is used a lot in jazz over the V7 chord of a progression. Ive listened to metal basically all my life and play in metal bands but i also enjoy listening to jazz and the theory behind it as a whole. you'd be surprised how much metal and jazz relate

      Play by ear (which may be developed by practice) in (concert) E minor, except sharp the D during the 5.

    What guitar is that? I really want one great guitar to have in my life before I die and I want it to sound good when it is played for Jazz. That looks great.

    • @QuistJam
      @QuistJam  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Syahmi Rosli - it's a Peerless. Go try some of them out, they play and sound great and don't actually cost very much.

    .....;-).... fantastic intro....;-)......such technique maestro... stellar vamp... for my educations sake what is the time signature and how does one count it?

    • @QuistJam
      @QuistJam  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Marty - it's 4/4.. the bass is (mostly) laying down beats 1 2 3 4 .... - I hope that helps....

    • @martyisabeliever
      @martyisabeliever 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      QuistTV OK .... tis what i thought still a noob in my deciphering counts. so in B.P.M. is the "beat" value measured as a whole note?? (silly question perhaps just don't want to assume?). Thanks Jacob, you still in Dublin?

    • @QuistJam
      @QuistJam  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not silly at all.. it's literally "beats per minute"... most commonly quarter notes, but not necessarily... like in 7/8 you'd count 8th notes/minute.... I'm back in London, playing Glastonbury Festival this weekend with Bryan Ferry :)

    • @martyisabeliever
      @martyisabeliever 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      QuistTV see i was wrong... but as you write that now I remember, the bottom number in the fraction sets the BPM (e.g. 3/4 is quarters 6/8 in eights ect ) have started working with Derryl gabel and timing has been identified as a weakness... any help exercises or insight you can give would be greatly appreciated. have a Great and productive day my friend!
