    Chord progression:
    II: Bmin7b5 I E7 I Amin7 I Amin7 :II
    On the track, you will hear extensions of these chords - as is common in jazz of course :)
    Scale suggestions:
    A minor scale - A B C D E F G (A)
    (Bmin7b5 chords and Amin7 chords)
    A harmonic minor scale - A B C D E F G# (A)
    (E7 chords)
    Basic arpeggios:
    Bmin7b5 arpeggio = B D F A
    E7 arpeggio = E G# B D
    Am7 arpeggio = A C E G
    Next up, try out some more advanced colours on the dominant chord (E7) by treating it as an altered chord and using the altered scale:
    E altered scale - E F G Ab Bb C D (E)
    The altered scale is the mode which starts on the 7th step of the melodic minor scale, so in other words - the notes of E altered scale are the same as those of F melodic minor scale :)

    Here's a minor 2-5-1 lick you can try out goo.gl/McUjFO

    Intro played on a Peerless guitar - borrowed from the one and only Les Davidson!

      QuistJam This is in C major. Amin being it's relative minor is played different and may be confusing to budding players. I really appreciate you doing the work and posting the tracks. Scales for folks just starting out may get confused when it doesn't sound right because the tonic is not right. Again, thanks for the postings, and I hope you keep up the work

    This particular jam along in A minor,has helped me. Is continuing to help me with my improvising skills. I've actually been able to us this minor 2-5-1 progression in helping me with developing the make the guitar talk kinds of progressions. You are truly a genius in the way you put those tracks together. Thanks to you I am never bored anymore. I wish there was a way I could show you how much this track has helped me!!! Rob Grenville from RealChords Pro iPad app here. Top track. Thanks QuistJam. This is Bm7b5, E7, and Am7. All chords in the Am chord scale. The Bm7b5 is the 2 chord and is the Locrian chord in this scale. (it is the 7 chord in the relative C Major scale) The E7 is the Phrygian and the Am7 the Aeolian. The point is that soloing in C/Am (no sharps or flats) means the modes follow you. The Locrian sound natural in this context, not weird. That is the main use for modes: that they follow you. The chords do the work and you play in home key. Try Autumn Leaves in Em. It has all the chords of the Em/G chord scale. Play only in Em and let the chords follow you. Easy on the mind, and kind to the ear!!

    • @QuistJam
      @QuistJam  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks for sharing this. You are nearly correct.. The E7 is not phrygian though, but rather phrygian dominant, which stems from the A harmonic minor scale... note the G# in the E7 chord. Thanks again

    • @Kornhulio18
      @Kornhulio18 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Isn't it Em7? If you harmonize A aeolian you get
      I Am7,
      II Bm7b5,
      III Cmaj7,
      IV Dm7,
      V Em7,
      VI Fmaj7,
      VII G7

    • @Koosy77
      @Koosy77 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kornhulio18 Can't base it entirely off Cmaj. E7 is still the 5th degree of c minor and the dominant chord works great there too. The G# in the E7 gives it the harmonic minor sound. You could do a parallel chord change and do Em7 and E7, G#Aug would sound good too! it also comes from A harmonic Minor or E Phrygian dominant.

    • @joshkristine6189
      @joshkristine6189 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Quist Great to use an A harmonic minor scale on the E7 then?.😇 How would you suggest playing in the 2nd Chord Bm7b5? Would a half diminished scale work on it then you go to A harmonic minor on the E7 chord, then back to the C major scale on the Am7 chord?.

    Besides jamming with the track, I love singing the majority of Sting's Moon Over Bourbon Street to it.
    There are two half cadences ending on the 5, but the rest is all 2-5-1 in harmonic minor.
    Or 6-5-1, which is the same difference.
    IMHO, the song is improved by this track's swing beat.
    Amazed Sting didn't record it that way, although he (presumably) had to start with a clean sheet of paper in 1985 while I have these groovy backing tracks.

    Thanks My Quist. Respects for your jam tracks and your wonderful playing that precedes them. You are correct and I was wrong, but I've spent 45 years ignoring (and forgetting) the theory. Yes, the E7 chord is phrygian dominant in the rhythm track. I stand corrected. But in playing over it, it's ok to ignore the G# in the chord and solo in only the home Key. To me, that's the main use of modes: Ignore the small clashes and variations in the absolute tonality and find the shortest way thru. Let the chords follow you - not the other way around (that comes later - as you know, you do it all the time in your great playing). Too many players get hung up on the clashes. Too much analysis can bog players down. The clashes pass the ear effortlessly if you believe what you are playing. A classic example of this is 1.6.2.5. Often the 6 and 2 are played as Dominant 7 chords. You can ignore them and still play in the home key (and the home key blues). Another example is playing Phrygian over the Major chord: a classic flamenco device. Humbly yours, Rob.

    Can anyone tell me where if possible I would use either a diminished scale in this progression (and which one, beginning with a whole tone or half-step and from what root) or similarly a mode of the melodic minor. Thanks, I'm new to jazz and for this I'm using A aolian, Am pentatonic, Am blues (especially on ii), A hungarian minor, A harmonic minor (over V) and also A natural minor with a passing g# (Bebop harmonic minor) - Thanks to anyone in advance and also thanks for the track, its a great help.

      +mcquinn01 use the diminished scale over the ii-half -diminished starting the scale from the half step (b-c) also the 6th and 7th modes of the melodic minor work well. And for the i chord you can use melodic minor, natural minor, and Dorian b9, and of course throw in any grace notes that sound good. a few good melodic minor modes to use over the V chord would be the altered scale (7th mode) for a lot of tension as well as the lydian dominant and mixolydian b13 scales (4th and 5th modes) you can also incorporate the whole tone scale over the V chord. Really the some of these may sound good, some may sound terrible, it is all preference. So learn the modes of the major, melodic minor, and harmonic minor scales, and then throw them over any chord you want. Also analyze the scales and see how similar they are to the scale of the chord being played. There are endless possibilities, so don't wait for someone else to tell you the "right way" because it is all opinion. hope this helps a bit.
