Listening to Mr.Zach Hazard is always a treat. his Mortar gauging story is also interesting. Its always funny hearing someone being so passionate about something, losing their absolute mind.

I never really liked wearing hats growing up but then i was required to wear at work. Didn't matter what kind of hat just needed one and now i unconsciously just put my cap on everytime i leave the house.

Fun vid! I remember shaping my berets by just plopping them on my head and hopping in the shower with it.
Aside from that, our methods were the same, lol

As someone who was in the army at that particular point in time, the beret was absolutely a gigantic pain in the ass.
And yes, Sergeants Major tended to fall into two categories. For ease of use, we'll call them Ass Kickers and Dog & Pony Shows. Every battalion and above in the military wants a senior noncommissioned officer who falls into the Ass Kicker category. These are the realists, the people who have been in the army forever, know how it runs, and know that the most effective fighting force is the one that's doing real work. Unfortunately, having been in a support unit and not combat arms, we tended to get saddled with Dog & Pony Shiw leadership, the people who have been in the army forever, but feel that the most effective use of their soldiers' time is making everything look nice. The real "paint these rocks white and don't step on the grass" type leadership.
For a very short while, when I first got to my unit in Fort Drum, NY, we had an Ass Kicker for our battalion Command Sergeant Major. His introductory speech to us was maybe a hundred words. Just about two years later, right before we deployed to Iraq, he keft and we got a Dog & Pony CSM. And he stuck around until I left four years later. It was miserable.

Now I kinda want to ask a vet about berets, I'm in Canada and various units here have been wearing them for a long time. I think the beret became standard since the 80s? And Royal Canadian Armoured Corps has been wearing it since WW2. I wonder if it was an issue with who made them, their regs, or b/c they weren't used to them?

As someone who was apart of an amry jrotc during high school the instructions are very accurate except for the crying part but that because my dad is much more positive about the military.

Yeah, in the army jrotc, we had to wear beret i hated that thing so much mind i was in high-school. Spent 5 years in school did alot of things and if you ask went to the same middle school in my district mind you i have been getting A' and B's when high-school came i had to switch after the first marking period. Long story short i had to relearn everything from 6th to 8th plus getting some of my credits in my first year then went the followin 9th to 12th senior year came i had gotten a i think a internship or apprenticeship for the NSA Covid happened and they canceled it if i could go back into time to tell my younger self back in 9th grade to stab myself in the neck with a knife i would. Im just baffled how dumb and violent people can be at a hardware store. And i wish i can make this up but nope it's true for the younger generation just stop working your ass off Covid or something else might happen again. And if you ask i just finished watching the anger management.

With the way the army had us wear our haircuts back then? Not really with the hair clips. You can’t really get away with it unless you wore it loose which had its own issues.
