    Its nice to see that the kept the main part of the viaduct with the original brickwork rather than vandalise it when they renewed the track bed. Cheers Ron another great video mate well done.

      @@ParkinsonsWalks Hi Ron, sometimes it is nice to have a bit of excitement in our lives and success is always welcome.
      Also, in normal times, going for a train ride can be another nice of looking for things like forgotten viaducts on operating railway lines.
      Earlier this week, I unearthed my 1970 copies of the Industrial Railway Society's gazetteer of industrial and preserved locos in Great Britain.
      As a pre-internet and pre-personal computer thing, it is fascinating to see that they worked to maintain a paper database of every industrial loco everywhere in the country.
      For example, under Stonehouse, the book lists a 4 wheel diesel mechanical made by Muir Hill as being out of use at the premises of Hoffmans Gloucester Ltd.
      Back in 1970, there were still industrial steam locos to be seen at many locations but diesels had rapidly become the predominant type of loco.

    A lovely summer stroll along the canal whilst in search of a hidden viaduct, few things can top that Ron. Must admit I thought the old structure would exist merely as a few old remnants hidden among the undergrowth, so you surprised me with that find. Very impressive indeed👍

    Ron, more of a success than a failure. I look forward to my Friday treats, watching these over breakfast.
    I had not idea such a structure existed; after all, the terrain does not lend itself to viaduct building?
    Come the Summer I hope that I can retrace your steps and
    find it for myself

    Excellent adventure with a spectacular outcome. I have to admit that I wouldn't be able to resist shinning up that fallen tree. What could possibly go wrong ? The canal bridge/tunnel operation will be worth seeing. Network Rail have just done a similar job at Peterborough, where they built a concrete tunnel beside the East Coast main line and then pushed it underneath. It's almost worthy of Brunel...

    You may like to know that the canal is having a new tunnel, suitable for narrow boats, later this year. The work was going to happen during the summer but has been delayed due to some difficulties. This is part of the Saul Junction to Stroud re-opening of the canal.

    I had no idea that was there. Well found Sir! I do know the area around the Ocean though, fished there many times. The stretch opposite the church is good for tench and the ocean itself is full of fish if you can fish it! It's fairly overgrown with lillies. I do know about the bridge over the canal though. Back in 1991/2 the Cotswold Canal Trust were investigating whether it would be possible to put in the old rail bridge and open the canal fully. The quote came back from the railway body of £695,000 which was far too rich for the trust. I'll bet these 30 years later it's a million. If I won the lottery I would pay for it. Perhaps tonights numbers will be favourable?????????

    • @ParkinsonsWalks
      @ParkinsonsWalks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You will be delighted to know that the canal 'tunnel' has been approved, with the costs shared between the canal trust, the council and Network Rail. Not without issues, I'll cover it in the next vlog. If you do win tonight, don't forget who just saved you a million quid. Just saying. Ron
