  • The European Union’s top diplomat, Josep Borrell, admitted that the “era of Western dominance has indeed definitively ended”. He warned that the EU must not divide the world into “the West against the Rest”, as “many in the ‘Global South’ accuse us of ‘double standards’”. Ben Norton analyzes the historic shift.

      BRICS exists to set a model for the use of national currencies. All countries should have the right to do so.
      Most black African countries actually export food and labour to Arab countries, and so can earn the forex to buy oil from Arabs. There is no need for the Petrodollar.

      What about the Roman Empire, arguably only destroyed in 1922 (last Ottoman Sultan, who was not just last Caliph but also last Roman Emperor, mind you).
      Egypt of Mali are also direct and barely smaller descendants of their respective older empires. Admittedly they're weaker but still standing. Same for Brazil, which is now a federal republic. Iran, not much smaller than the Sassanid Empire and speaking the very same language? Isn't the US Empire the new Roman Empire in way too many ways?

      Not sure if that's a genuine concern, or simply an attempt to create a heated conversation, but I'll reply anyways. That map is absolutely correct... for navigational purposes. Since our planet is a spheroid (no matter what those flat-earthers say) if you want to draw a flat map, you have to distort it in some way. Merkator projection (which is used almost for any map) keeps angles, shapes, and directions, which was and is important for navigation and flight control. As a drawback, areas get increasingly distorted and "bloated" towards poles. Most famous example is that Greenland appears larger than South America, while being 8 times smaller.

Sure: France (or rather its oligarchs) have looted Africa big way but France used to be a great power long before it had any colonies whatsoever, and that power status mostly derived from its agriculture (hence it became the beloved of physiocrats, who were defeated by market capitalists but still had a strong point that has been largely forgotten in these two last centuries of brutal industrialization).
      What France largely lacks is minerals, including energy providing ones. In the past this fueled wars with Germany (France wanted to grab some of those Rhineland coal mines) and later the infamous uranium colonialism in Niger especially, as well as its dependency on GB/USA re. oil colonialism in West Asia. All this could be reversed if France (or Europe in general) would go radically "green" (renewables + green hydrogen) in terms of energy production, sadly it is not happening (or only extremely slowly) because of US interference (Russia doesn't help either). If Europe wants to survive as credible operative great power in some capacity, it needs to produce its own energy fundamentally from renewables and retake the industrial production capacities that has been abandoning out of complacency and excessively high cost of life (notably housing).
      This renewable (+ green hydrogen) need also applies to other countries without significant fuel resources such as China or India. It's not even about global warming only: it is that all fossil fuels and also uranium are being exhausted and won't exist in any meaningful capacity by the end of the century, probably quite earlier.

    The West as a concept, has been on the back foot, going back as far as the Vietnam War. Neoliberal economics (coupled with neocon military policy) was the West’s last throw of the dice, to reassert a global hegemony it was otherwise losing. But when the 2008 capitalist crisis, crashed the living standards of ordinary citizens in the countries of the imperial core, increased military spending has become politically more problematic, no matter how much scaremongering and sabre rattling was deployed by western capitalist elites in their poltical and media classes. It’s caught between the devil of a populace now economically suffering, and the deep blue sea, of an increasingly confident Global South. Something is about to give in the imperial core. You can feel it. .

That’s already a thing with China being a massive corporation with Xi jing Ping as ceo and black rock being the third largest economy in the world and Elon musk being a private citizen who controls rockets. • @ChuckPalomo
      @ChuckPalomo 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      In the past it was sustainable, because even though they were resource rich they didn't have the industry to refine and process those resources, so the west could simply nurture instability, then use bribery or force to create unequal partnerships on poor countries and take all their assets. Now with China helping industrialize the third world, and with BRICS enabling cooperation between those countries, the west has lost its leverage. The dollar reserves are their last weapon, and even that is starting to fail. Argentine is the exception, but their president is crazy.

    I failed to see sadly that Western populace is mentally aware of this and start learning and working with non-Western world. Using history as our teacher, it took decades for British to realize and accept US had replaced UK as global dominant power, and likewise it may take decades too for Western to draw and conclude that Western dominance is beyond reach.

    • @ReturnOfTheJ.D.
      @ReturnOfTheJ.D. 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      The main reason the UK lived in a bubble and saw itself as a global superpower long after that period expired is that they still retained links to many Commonwealth nations, which the US did not have a long history with, such that the UK was the central point of the "Anglosphere" culturally (no longer economically). The US was isolationist before World War II, but took over the British Empire in return for saving the UK from certain destruction during that war. Because the original British Empire was around a quarter of the world's people and land, it was a very significant network of nations who in some ways shared common goals - this type of unity is harder to find among the US and its vassal states. The American Empire is nowhere as old and well established as the British one was, and will never get that large and influential globally in future as time goes on. US Power reached its zenith in the 1990s, in the wake of the power vaccuum left by the collapse of the USSR, and has been in decline ever since.
