  • Hi Friends! It's time for another Sewing Basics tutorial! ♡
    Waist bands are an essential part to sewing skirts and knowing how to install one properly can really up the quality of your garment! This is a method I learned in school and involves "stitch in the ditch" a way to hide your stitches!♡
    Let me know if you have questions!
    Keep sewing, stay positive and have fun! ♡

    Thank you for going slow and showing step by step how to actually attach the waistband! I hand sew the occasional project, and this is an absolute perfect video of both interfacing the waistband and attaching it to the skirt portion!!

    Another video I watched said press the iron down when fusing interfacing, but don't slide it. They said sliding the iron causes wrinkles and bubbles because the stretch is different. I'm watching these because my daughter is working on something and I actually know nothing about this. Only commenting because that detail seemed relevant.

    You are so wonderfully creative, and explain and demonstrate very well! I wanted to mention that interfacing may work better, if you just hold iron in one spot for approx 15 seconds, depending on fabric. Then lift iron, move it over and repeat, opposed to swiping along. Just a thought, you are amazing!

      If you're sewing over pins just make sure you're going slow because I heard if you hit a pin while sewing fast then it can potentially mess up the timing of the machine.

    I watched this video like 8 times while making the skirt I just finished. It was so clear and concise! Also.... so many people who make tutorials have this bizarre accent/speech thing where they say "een" instead of "ing." "Now we will start seween and threadeen and unpickeen...." It seriously drives me crazy. So I appreciate your instructions AND your proper enunciation! ;'D

    Is interfacing needed?

    • @EliEbberts
      @EliEbberts  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      While it's not technically needed I very much suggest using it, it will keep your waist band crisp!

  • @isa-uo2tz

    Quick question, is there any other way to make a pleated skirt without a zipper? I don’t have one but I have buttons. Im just not sure if it would work or how to do it

    • @EliEbberts
      @EliEbberts  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you’d like to complete a skirt without a zipper I suggest looking into historical closures on clothes. Generally they used hooks, snaps or buttons as zippers weren’t widely available!

    How can I hide a elastic band inside the waist band?

    • @EliEbberts
      @EliEbberts  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello! You have a few options when it comes to adding elastic to this skirt! You could put elastic around the entire waist but leaving a 2" gap when "Stitching in the Ditch", you would then thread the elastic into the waist band, stitch the elastic closed and finished the "stitch in the ditch". The other option is to short stitch a strip of elastic (usually around 6") directly to the waist band (where it would be in the back of the skirt) - do this before attaching the waist band then continue as normal.

  • @emm1536
    @emm1536 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    is there any way to do this without interfacing?

    • @EliEbberts
      @EliEbberts  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You can create a waist band without interfacing it simply won't be as stiff! Follow the same steps just omit the Interfacing! (: Note that if you're using a thin/silky fabric you might want to flat line it with cotton for stability.

    • @maryharvey724

    How are you sewing over the pins .? Everyone always says "be sure not to sew over the pins or you'll damage your machine?" Lol im so lost

    • @baileydumlao5517
      @baileydumlao5517 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you place them perpendicular to the direction you sew, it’s never a problem. In my costume shop we sew over them because the likelihood of breaking a needle on a pin is so slim. Just go perpendicular!

    • @EliEbberts
      @EliEbberts  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha everyone has their own methods and preferences! I’ve never damaged my machine sewing over the pins and I find that it holds the fabric better than the other method. (:

  • @rebeccaparrish954
    @rebeccaparrish954 ปีที่แล้ว

    Oof I chose the worst fabric for this, it's tulle over a shimmery nylon and it's so slippery. Well the end product won't be professional quality but I think I'll still be proud of it! Or at least if anyone notices the imperfections I can say it was my first time with that fabric and I was still learning how to sew.

    • @EliEbberts
