    Your videos are EXCELLENT! They give me hope that I may actually become an ok novice sewer in 2015. So far, a lot of projects don't turn out and have to be thrown away (I'm using fabric from my fabric stash until my skills get better.) Thanks for taking the time to show each step and for explaining things so clearly.

    10:53....*mind blown* that's such an AMAZING way to finish off that overlapping waistband! i've never seen that done so i'm literally grinning ear to ear! can't wait to try that out; i've been wanting to sew my daughter a pair of uniform pants for school since she's a little hard to fit in certain areas with clothes off the rack. WOW! tysm!

    Hi folks from Professor Pincushion this is my first time commenting on your page,blog whatever you called it; but it's not my first time watching your video tutorial; I enjoy your video tutorials because you explain things clearly well & sometimes if things may not seem to you like clear to the viewers who may be watching your videos you go over the particular project part again to show us; like how to exactly put it or sew it together etc & I like that you gives the detailed instruction on how to achieve the particular project & I've found that most of your videos does just that so I just want to thank you for taking your time out to share this tute' with us(viewers). I love your videos. Great job! I was wondering, instead of hand sewing the waistband closed, is there an easier technique/method to do it with the sewing machine where it still gives you that professional finish without it necessarily being an invisible stitch?

    • @ProfessorPincushion
      @ProfessorPincushion  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +2joshua22 instead of hand sewing, you can just machine stitch this, just realize that you'll see it on the right side so there will be a double stitch.

    This is a great video, however, I am redesigning a dress into a skirt and I don't have a pattern to start with. I searched for videos on hoe to make a waistband pattern but some aren't very clear. I have a measurement and wondered if maybe you could make a video about making your own patterns or at least a wasitband! Thanks for all the help with video has given me and confidence!

    • @ProfessorPincushion
      @ProfessorPincushion  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      a waistband like this is just a rectangle pattern. So for the length of the pattern it'll be the waistline of the skirt measurement, plus seam allowance which is probably 1 1/4" (5/8" X 2) and then whatever overlap you want the waistband to have, (if your doing a button closure or hooks and eyes). The width of the pattern is your finished waistband width X 2, (so if you want a 2" finished waistband width then you have 4"), plus the 1 1/4" for the seam allowance.

    I have just finished drafting and sewing together my first pair of shorts ( to be longer pants later on) I have come to the point where I will need to add some darts to thee waist band. The thing is when I do put on the waist band, it seems like any fit adjustment in the waist will be really tricky to do? These are test pants, once I am happy with them, I will be pulling them apart and making patterns from them. I also prefer to use clips instead of pins wherever possible

    • @ProfessorPincushion
      @ProfessorPincushion  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      no, there are no darts in the waistband. The waistband should be drafted to fit the length of the pant's waistline after the darts are sewn shut. If you've already drafted a pair of shorts, you should have your finished waistline measurement already, which is your waistline plus ease.

    • @davidmarks509
      @davidmarks509 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ProfessorPincushion Thank you for the reply. The issue is To get a nice fit the pants need to sit at the correct height. What I would like to do is have a temporary waist band that just holds the pants up. I have found it too easy to pull the pants too high and getting less than useful feed back on the fitting. Thanks once again.

    • @ProfessorPincushion

      The waistband needs to be folded over to the inside in order to finish the top and also provide more stabilization. It's normally the same material as the outer fabric.

    • @ProfessorPincushion
      @ProfessorPincushion  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      it should be the pants waistline measurement, plus seam allowance on the ends, plus whatever extra you want for overlap for a button or hooks and bars. The last one really depends on the size of the fastener you want

    I'm left-handed too, so it seemed fine to me.
    For some reason, when I turn my band over to sew the raw edge, it buckles around the corner. It never lays flat. What am I doing wrong?

    • @ProfessorPincushion
      @ProfessorPincushion  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      did you trim your seam allowance before turning it right side out? Also, be sure to press it after turning it right side out. It sounds like the corner is being pulled, which is why you want to press and pin so everything is flat before you start sewing, instead of winging it.

    Thanks for this video. I seem to have a hard time getting my waistband to line up properly. Do you have any tips for this.

      Do you mean lining up notches and seams? I match all of those first and then ease in between. If it seems like one has a little more excess fabric, check out our tutorial on how to ease two pieces of fabric together. It's on our channel and my little trick.

      I am referring to the waistband on both sides of the zipper. They line up when I pin. However once the zipper is installed the waistband seams are always a little off. Is this the type of thing covered in the video you are referring to?

    Why is my 28.5'' inch waistband (non stretchable) smaller than my 28'' waistline? When I sew the band to the waistline I have about 2 inches of waistline left over! I've measured and remeasured and I don't understand.

      is the 28 1/2" the finished waistband, after you sew seams on the end? If it's what you cut out originally, then it could be the seam allowances that's making it smaller.

      If you are using interfacing on the waistband, it is designed to prevent that waistband from stretching. However, there is nothing to prevent the waistline of the garment from stretching as you sew it. That is why it is very important to sew a stay stitch at the top of the waistline to prevent it from stretching while you are sewing on the waistband.

    /Thanks for the tutorial!! Just a suggestion if you could make the colours contrast or different from each other with each material so if the viewer is higher percentage of visual learner, they can see where the different materials and thread intersect and such, Thanks ^_^
