Narrow pavements and poorly-designed ramps in Shanghai often force wheelchair users off sidewalks and onto busy roads. Despite China’s rapid modernisation in recent years, disabled access and related facilities are still seen as inadequate in major Chinese cities.

I remember in Nanning, their brand spanking new pedestrian ramps were sealed off because people kept driving their scooters up there. Naturally, this is extremely frustrating because that means there are no ramps for wheelchairs to get down to crosswalks for example. None. At all.

The main streets and squares of Chinese cities are generally equipped with blind roads, and the residences and public places are equipped with barrier-free designs. But it is still not enough. For example, there are few public transportation vehicles that are conducive to the disabled. In a truly harmonious society, the attention and care for the disabled is a manifestation of the civilization of the entire society. Chinese society still has a long way to go。
